Dr_Novella takes the stage as USC's new coach

In Greek myth, the epic event known as the Trojan War began when Helen of Sparta was brought to the prince of Troy. In the modern day world of college football, there are no ten year long sieges or men being stabbed in their heels, but there is a Spartan, who is now a Trojan.

With the college season’s end in reach, those not fighting in the playoffs are looking to next season, and for a number of high profile programs, a new coach to lead them. One of these is the University of Southern California who announced Tuesday the hiring of San Jose coach Dr_Novella after what has been a frustrating season for the Trojans.

In what should have been a title defending season, the Trojans struggled, first from the early season loss of their Head Coach Dhawk18, and then from the loss to Minnesota which capped off a high profile article detailing the chaos and drama that seemed to have engulfed the program. While they did eventually turn things around and end the season 8-5, by all accounts the season was nothing but a disappointment for a team hoping to repeat.

In the middle of this chaos was the open secret that Spartan’s coach Dr_Novella was eying this job from the moment it was announced that the spot was open. A California native himself, he grew up watching USC at the height of their college football power and saw the jump as an opportunity. “Up till now my coaching career has mostly been with smaller to mid sized schools, first with ULL in the CFBHC, then San Jose here. Coming to Southern California feels like the culmination of all that, my shot with the big boys.” Novella explained during his first meeting with the press as a Trojan.

Before any of that however, Novella began by voicing his appreciation to San Jose. “It was an honor coaching this program for the past few years, we accomplished some great things and I wish the players and facility the best of luck in their future endeavors.” Despite the difficult season his team also had, Novella finished his run with the Spartans with a 24-16 record and one MWC Championship, with an appearance in a second one.

Looking forward to the next season, there are alot of questions for Novella, most important among them, what does the USC offense look like without their leader Julian Longacre? When things looked their worst, it was Longacre that held the team together and helped them rebound. But Novella is not too worried. “Great leaders not only elevate their team, they inspire the players to be better. I think we’ll find when the going gets tough that those who were inspired by Longacre, they’ll take what they learned from him and step up to be that leader themselves.”

How is this possible when the league is only 3 seasons old?
