[2024] Rumors Swirl After Coach No-Shows in Upset Loss

Recommended Posts

On Saturday, the 24th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers were upset by lowly Michigan State in East Lansing by a score of 24-10. While the result would be newsworthy enough, the absence of coach @Piercewise1 from the game has released a flood of reactions on social media.

Fans and pundits have proposed a string of increasingly ludicrous reasons for the coach’s disappearance, from contract disputes to a medical emergency to a sudden desire to steal the Declaration of Independence. But the university remains stoic in its defense of Pierce’s decision.

“There was a personal reason for his absence, and all relevant parties were informed well in advance,” said athletic director Scott Dolson in a prepared statement. “Staff and student athletes knew this would be the case – that coach would be around for practice, film study, and all the usual weekly activities, but would not be traveling to East Lansing with the team – and prepared accordingly. The NCAA was also informed, just to ensure we covered all our bases.”

The team performed poorly without Pierce on the sidelines. Samuel Johnson threw 3 interceptions, and the defense allowed 238 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. With the loss, the team fell from 1st place in the conference standings to a 4-way tie for 3rd alongside Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Illinois. This was supposed to be an easy win for the Hoosiers, a tune-up before a final stretch that includes Michigan (3-3, 4-5), Ohio State (3-2, 5-3), and Purdue (4-1, 6-2). Now the team is faced with three must-win games against strong opposition if they want to remain in contention for the B1G championship.

Rumors about Pierce’s tenure at Indiana have been swirling since the beginning of the season. In three seasons he’s turned the Hoosiers from a pushover to a legitimate threat, but his contract is almost up. Some are concerned that this impressive turnaround would serve only as a stepping-stone to a larger program, though the administration is more hopeful.

“We’ve been quietly working toward an extension for some time now,” Dolson said. “While we haven’t been able to agree on terms quite yet, I believe we are close to an arrangement that will meet everyone’s needs. Coach has been very plain about his long-term plans for the program, and the university both believes in his vision and respects his acumen. While negotiations are ongoing, we have full confidence in Pierce’s abilities as a coach and recruiter. Why, just this week we received 3 more commitments to next year’s class.”

A straw poll conducted on campus suggested that 78% of students who follow the football program rate Pierce’s first 3 years as either Successful or Very Successful (a score of 4 or better on a 5-point scale), and an even higher percentage hope that he returns to coach the team next year. With the team poised to record its winningest season ever and next year’s recruiting class currently ranked in the top 10 nationally, it’s not hard to see why.

The Hoosiers host the Michigan Wolverines in Bloomington this Saturday evening, and Pierce will be on the sidelines. The team is still seeking its 7th regular season win, which would set a program record.

A couple of follow-up questions for Mr. Dolson:

Has Coach @Piercewise1 provided a statement for the media or the public?  The administration's hopes of retaining such a talented coach are understandably impactful - particularly when said coach also holds the reins of your college basketball team; however, mere aspirations are rarely enough to satiate a fan-base who risks losing their winningest-football coach and their basketball coach in one fell swoop.  Moreover, you mention that Coach and the administration are in lock-step on long-term plans for the program, but that you are only close to reaching an arrangement that will meet everyone's needs; where are you and Coach not seeing eye-to-eye?  Frankly, from a third-party perspective, Coach's absence from time-to-time ought to be expected, that with his duties and commitments with the NFL writ-large, Cleveland Browns, and the San Diego Clippers.  What remains to be seen is whether or not your Indiana athletics administration will be, for lack of a better term "out-bid" by administrations willing to grant Coach more autonomous command-and-control over his programs: both the Ohio State University and the University of Southern California, with high-profile vacancies in both football and basketball and close proximity to Coach's existing commitments, come to mind as potential suitors.

Presently coach is hard at work preparing the team for Michigan, so the administration is doing its part by handling media related to his contract. He'll be available at his usual media times both pre- and post-game, but those questions should pertain to this week's game.

There's no particular sticking point at present, it's just that there are so many factors to consider: contract length, base pay, incentives (both performance and recruiting based), etc. There's plenty of goodwill to go around, we just need to hammer down the exact amounts.

Losing Coach to a fellow B1G program would be salt in the wound, to be sure. And both programs boast impressive histories. Which is why we started the negotiation process early this year and have been deliberate in our intentions. I won't put words in his mouth, but our hope is that the recruiting classes he's already brought in, combined with the lack of an obvious front-runner in the conference, provide Coach with plenty of potential to create a national contender right here. And that would be based not on any name recognition or historical tradition, but solely on the work that he's done on the recruiting trail and in the film room.

You could take over Minnesota, god knows I should be "fired" after this year.
