Bears Offensive Coordinator Thomas Hallbrender on the field before a 2023 game against the Green Bay Packers on December 31, 2023

According to close sources, it seems as if the Bears have fired their offensive coordinator, Thomas Hallbrender, after 5 years in that position today. The team later announced the firing on their Twitter page, although it is worth noting that they have not fired anyone else.

This comes after a disastrous 0-27 loss against the Detroit Lions, which was reacted with plenty of boos from the crowd. The game featured an abysmal 46 yard performance and arguably Gerald Lewis's worst game of his career, going 2 for 22 even though he did not throw an interception that game. This comes after arguably the best game of the season for the Bears offense against the Steelers in a 23-20 win, where Gerald Lewis combined for 451 yards that game.

We have seen an ongoing trend this season as the Bears have struggled to get points out somewhat. The Bears did win last week, but despite the big offensive showing, they only scored 23 points. And before that, in the week 1 loss in Lambeau, the Bears ended up only scoring 17 points. There hasn't seemed to be a huge bear for Chicago this season. This is also something, in retrospect, something we have not seen from them in years past as well. These offensive struggles have been the complaints of the Bears, all throughout, more magnified by the blowout.

"This is something we won't tolerate." said head coach nemolee.exe in a recent press conference. "The development of the offense has to be better than it has been, especially given the tools that we have at the current moment. Last night was an example of the incompetence that we have faced on the offensive side of the ball. I have made the decision to let go because, clearly, we haven't done that yet. I feel like we haven't reached our full potential, and that is where I am planning for the team to go, and I am not sure that Thomas is the perfect guy given our track record."

Under Hallbrender's leadership with the Bears throughout the years, it has been meddling at best. The Bears have been average to disappointing at best in the 5 years he has been with the team. In his first year as offensive coordinator, Hallbrender had the 17th and 15th best offenses in the league despite making the playoffs both seasons and then it all went downhill from there. The Bears had the 21st offense in his third year, and despite winning the NFC North and making the playoffs again, had the 19th-best offense in the league and was a first-round exit. At this point, it does not look any better, as they have close to the bottom half yet again, hence the firing.

Prior to taking the helm as the team's offensive coordinator 5 years ago, he spent 2 years as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he put up exceptional numbers with the Chiefs, that is all before spending 3 years prior as the Browns offensive coordinator, where he was fired after an abysmal season in his last. Before his first offensive coordinator gig in the NFL, he actually spent 4 years as the Bears quarterback coach after spending 2 years as the assistant. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator/QBs Coach for the Boston College Eagles after spending some time as an offensive assistant at Utah. Thomas Hallbrender was the graduate assistant for his alma mater, Ashland Eagles, for 3 years before then, where he was a part of a Division II championship team.

It is clear that Hallbrender would not be replaced during the season, at least not through any assistant coach. It was reported that nemolee.exe will replace him in the interim. "We are looking to make strides in improving our offense, but doing that during the season will not make this chaotic; we will focus on that during the offseason."
