In this series we will take a look at how each of the redshirt freshmen, with a significant role, from coach smackemz initial recruiting class fared in their debut season.

We have made it to the defensive side of the ball.  Next defender on the list is the pass rush specialist Mike Johnson.

Role - Starting Outside Linebacker

Early in camp there were reports that the 4 star pass rusher might not be ready for a starting role, but the Mountaineers had faith in their blue chip pass rusher.  Johnson started the season as the starting LOLB, playing mostly in their base defense, but quickly was promoted to a full time starter.  Another player that seemed to improve with the increased opportunity, Johnson would have his better games of the season towards the end of the year.  As we mentioned with Robert Cabral, Johnson will have plenty of opportunities to gain chemistry with the defensive line and should be a major piece of the defense going forward.

Best Game - Week 13 vs. Cincinnati - 5.5 Tackles, 2 TFL, 2 Sacks

Mike Johnson saved his best game for the rivalry game against the Bearcats.  He was a force in the game having 2 TFL in the run game, and notching 2 sacks against the cross state rivals.  Johnson started to put it all together, and his combination of quickness and strength showed out in the season finale.

Worst Game - Week 1 vs. The Citadel - 1 Tackle

Similar to Robert Cabral - it took Johnson a few weeks to adjust to the speed of the college game.  In a game that WVU dominated, the redshirt freshman did not make much of an impact.

Overall - Fans have to be excited that Johnson improved each game, and finished the season with a truly dominating performance.  The WVU defense projects to be much improved next season, but these hints of what is to come are an exciting exercise as we head into the offseason.

Outlook - Similar to Cabral - we don't see a scenario where Johnson is not a 4 year starter for this WVU defense.  We expect that he will continue to occupy the starting ROLB spot, and will slide down to DE in passing downs.  We mentioned the young core that will grow together on the defensive line, and Johnson will contribute nicely to that group with his ability to disrupt the quarterback and bring quick pressure.
