2023 Post-Draft Roster Snapshot

Interesting things in the post-draft calc.

Team Rankings

Namely, I outdid myself and found a way to weighted average a roster by the idealized minutes allocation possible for their team. In other words, weighting the overall by whether or not those players will actually be on the court.

Lakers drop from 3rd best starting rotation to 12th based solely on having no bench and starters with bad stamina.

Dallas jumps from 24th and fighting for a play-in spot to 18th and mid-tier just by virtue of the relative strength of having 3 starters that could play nearly every minute of a game.

Other stuff in there as well, including a Min/Q1/Q2/Q3/Max on the top 160 rostered players and a conditional formatting of all stats based on the overage of the top 160 players (basically, 'what is this skill's standing based on likely starters?').

The average starter sits at about 19 at their individual skills and 93 in overall - with a B- potential.

New Orleans nearly managed to grab worst team from Indiana with the worst top 5 in the league, but based on ideal rotations, Indiana grabbed the title back after that calc.

Copy the sheet to fiddle around with it if you like, just thought I'd take a look since the draft seemed to shake up conventional knowledge on where rosters / players stood in isolation.

Player Rankings

If resources were allocated equally across teams in the league, the worst starter should be around 85 ovr. Lower than that and said player is in bench player territory. A top 8 rotation player should be around 79 ovr, and top 10 / end of bench is 75. Once FA players get signed, I'm sure that'll go up.

If a player has below a B-, they have below average potential compared both to all starters and to the league in general. Standard deviation is about 1 full letter grade. Interestingly, no team appears to have 5 above average starters - with both Golden State and Washington in position to start a 92 ovr 5th player.
