Recruiting U series! The Cornerbacks

Recommended Posts

As we are nearing the end of the third sim recruiting cycle let's take a walk down memory lane and see which teams are leading at recruiting each position. This week we move to cornerbacks

Methodology: So I have a "score" for every recruit in the sim thus far. It is basically my (educated) assumption of their starting overall + 2.5 years of progressions. So these player scores are my rough estimate for how good a player will be as a ~RS JR / Senior. Of course this is not precise, some will over-perform or under-progress but I think it's the best metric there is. In any case, for offensive line we are taking the top THREE recruits for each school at CB and simply adding them together and then ranking the schools.

Without further Ado:

Honorable mentions:

Tulsa - 148.37

2023 CB Nathan Spires - Ball Hawk 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.82448 overall (39th best CB)
2021 CB Aaron Mays - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)
2023 CB Jose Ramirez - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C- potential - 48.8814 overall (76th best CB)

San Diego State - 149.75

2022 CB Christopher Brown - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C potential - 50.4232291666667 overall (30th best CB)
2021 CB Francisco Massington - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)
2021 CB Matt Davidson - Ball Hawk 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)

Florida State - 149.9

2023 CB Alfredo Salas - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, B potential - 53.12465 overall (10th best CB)
2023 CB Salvador Gonzalez - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.98267 overall (38th best CB)
2022 CB William Mcnair - Ball Hawk 3*, C overall, A potential - 46.8054236369264 overall (90th best CB)

Houston - 149.91

2022 CB Michael Sweeney - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 51.2172916666667 overall (24th best CB)
2021 CB Noel Coward - Ball Hawk 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.5434815880349 overall (67th best CB)
2021 CB Josh Boscan - Ball Hawk 4*, B overall, C- potential - 49.1552083333334 overall (74th best CB)

Miami (FL) - 150.53

2023 CB Alexander Gonzales - Zone Coverage 5*, B overall, B+ potential - 54.71349 overall (3th best CB)
2023 CB Marlon Miree - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 50.81988 overall (25th best CB)
2022 CB Allen Roy - Man Coverage 4*, C overall, C potential - 44.9950054213135 overall (127th best CB)

#5: Bowling Green - 151.38

2021 CB Donald Dingus - Ball Hawk 5*, B overall, A- potential - 55.7602430555556 overall (1th best CB)
2021 CB Richie O'Malley - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)
2022 CB Scott Brewer - Man Coverage 4*, C overall, C+ potential - 45.9563541666667 overall (104th best CB)
2022 CB Jason Keene - Ball Hawk 4*, C overall, C+ potential - 45.6245833333334 overall (113th best CB)

Bowling Green has had respectable recruiting, opting for a man / ball hawking scheme. Of course what put them on the map originally was signing the #1 CB croot in Donald Dingus. Donald had a phenomenal freshman year, but even though he's progressed to an A overall as a sophomore he isn't filling the stat sheet as much. Perhaps QBs have already learned not to throw it his way. Richie O'Malley is a great counterpart on the other side, while Scott and Jason are high end CB3s. Oddly they didn't recruit any CBs this year, but it was mostly a luxury position for them.

#4: Tennessee - 152.08

2022 CB James Peckham - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C potential - 52.176875 overall (16th best CB)
2023 CB Wendell Gallagher - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C potential - 50.24308 overall (33th best CB)
2021 CB Justin Gsellman - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)
2021 CB Lorenzo Travis - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.5434815880349 overall (67th best CB)
2023 CB Robert Carranza - Zone Coverage 3*, C overall, A potential - 44.57158 overall (148th best CB)

As you'll see later, Tennessee was the favorite for plenty of CB targets who chose to go elsewhere. The guys they got to stick though are still plenty competent, albeit not the highest potentials. Justin, Lorenzo, and James will be the best 3 guys in the room next year as (So)/(Fr), so they will have several years worth of progressions although they will need to see a breakout this offseason to avoid still being a relative weak spot (I doubt any of them are A- by next year). Carranza is a good high potential pick up who could be a valuable CB3 as an upperclassman.

#3: Penn State - 152.69

2022 CB Paul Philips - Ball Hawk 5*, B overall, C+ potential - 54.4876041666667 overall (4th best CB)
2023 CB William Dunican - Ball Hawk 5*, B overall, D+ potential - 52.36814 overall (15th best CB)
2022 CB Shaun Bohlke - Man Coverage 4*, C overall, B- potential - 45.8339180607187 overall (105th best CB)
2023 CB Thomas Riley - Man Coverage 3*, C overall, A potential - 45.80842 overall (107th best CB)
2021 CB Saquon Gotay - Man Coverage 4*, C overall, C+ potential - 45.1072007007989 overall (125th best CB)

Penn State is the only school with multiple 5* CBs as they inked Paul Philips last year and Dunican this year. Both of them being ball hawks has to make opposing QBs VERY nervous when they play. Beyond that, Shaun and Thomas aren't going to be shutdown corners, but they don't need to be. They're plenty capable of managing opposing teams WR3s by themselves. Overall a really good room, just like most positions at PNST.

#2: UNLV - 153.86

2023 CB Anh Chuang - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, B+ potential - 53.51 overall (7th best CB)
2021 CB Thaddeus Koehler - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, B- potential - 50.6912434895834 overall (26th best CB)
2021 CB Hector Vargas - Man Coverage 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (57th best CB)
2022 CB Brad Klotter - Man Coverage 4*, C overall, C+ potential - 45.4554422242875 overall (114th best CB)

UNLV: CB-U? They're #2 here because they have 3 high end B overalls with good potential. I think Anh Chuang was one of the best CB prospects this year, and Thaddeus and Hector were great pickups in '21. Thad has separated himself a bit as the better player already, but neither of them were needed significantly this year as UNLV has a pretty sustainable pipeline of CBs above them and passing down.

#1: Tulane - 155.87

2022 CB Oscar Riser - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, B- potential - 53.5557291666667 overall (6th best CB)
2022 CB David Levine - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, B+ potential - 52.7740625 overall (13th best CB)
2021 CB Clint Sinkfield - Zone Coverage 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.5434815880349 overall (67th best CB)
2021 CB Jakob Sampson - Zone Coverage 3*, C overall, A+ potential - 45.7669902858901 overall (110th best CB)

Frickin Tulane. Hate them. Oscar and David were both 60%+ leans to Tennessee before signing with the green wave. Fantastic duo with high overall and high potential. They add on another B overall and then a 3* A+ potential as their 4th CB signee. None this year but nobody would really have gotten snaps over the guys above them. I feel very congratulatory and not sad at all about this. A+ position signees.
