Recruiting U series! The Defensive Tackles

Recommended Posts

As we are nearing the end of the third sim recruiting cycle let's take a walk down memory lane and see which teams are leading at recruiting each position. This week we move to Defensive Tackles

Methodology: So I have a "score" for every recruit in the sim thus far. It is basically my (educated) assumption of their starting overall + 2.5 years of progressions. So these player scores are my rough estimate for how good a player will be as a ~RS JR / Senior. Of course this is not precise, some will over-perform or under-progress but I think it's the best metric there is. In any case, for offensive line we are taking the top THREE recruits for each school at DT and simply adding them together and then ranking the schools. I PROMISE after the DL ones you'll stop reading as much about you know who

Without further Ado:

Honorable mentions:

Georgia - 133.63

2022 DT Jonathan Green - Pass Rusher 4*, C overall, B potential - 45.5352377633206 overall (33th best DT)
2023 DT Trevor Mack - Balanced 4*, C overall, B potential - 45.11737 overall (43th best DT)
2022 DT Daniel Tillman - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, C+ potential - 42.9786764250294 overall (118th best DT)

Wisconsin - 134

2023 DT Nicholas Wall - Pass Rusher 4*, C overall, B+ potential - 45.34947 overall (40th best DT)
2021 DT Shalom Taylor - Nose Tackle 3*, C overall, A potential - 44.6846574246166 overall (63th best DT)
2023 DT Robert "Zippy" Wheeler - Balanced 3*, C overall, B potential - 43.97 overall (85th best DT)

Ohio - 134.55

2022 DT William Penn - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, A potential - 46.2710370198257 overall (20th best DT)

2023 DT David Squicciarini - Balanced 4*, C overall, B- potential - 45.09868 overall (47th best DT)

2021 DT Jose Decker - Balanced 3*, C overall, B+ potential - 43.1790911985391 overall (115th best DT)

Kansas - 134.7

2023 DT Steve McCalister - Pass Rusher 4*, C overall, B+ potential - 45.86 overall (26th best DT)
2023 DT Richard Fulkerson - Balanced 4*, C overall, B+ potential - 45.67579 overall (28th best DT)
2021 DT Johnathan Putkonen - Nose Tackle 3*, C overall, B+ potential - 43.1790911985391 overall (115th best DT)

Army - 136.8

2023 DT Eusebio Whitham - Nose Tackle 4*, B overall, B potential - 49.46186 overall (12th best DT)

2023 DT Marcus Smith - Balanced 4*, C overall, C+ potential - 45.9536 overall (22th best DT)

2022 DT Adrian Blagg - Balanced 3*, C overall, C+ potential - 41.454512856256 overall (173th best DT)

#5: Tulsa - 138.9

2023 DT Michael Harris - Pass Rusher 5*, B overall, C potential - 52.1268 overall (7th best DT)

2021 DT Chris Basham - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, A potential - 44.6846574246166 overall (63th best DT)

2021 DT Antoan Lydon - Balanced 3*, C overall, B potential - 42.0865210262939 overall (143th best DT)

Tulsa has an actually pretty good DT pipeline, each year they've signed a pretty solid 3-star with high potential (see Chris and Antoan). What pushed them from above-average to top-5 was getting Michael Harris this cycle. An absolute monster pass rusher up the middle, Harris is capable of starting in a 4-3 next year as a true freshman.

#4: Bowling Green - 140.1

2022 DT Jasper Chunk - Nose Tackle 5*, B overall, B+ potential - 54.8120833333333 overall (2th best DT)

2021 DT Luis Seumalo - Nose Tackle 3*, C overall, B+ potential - 43.1790911985391 overall (115th best DT)

2021 DT Gil DeLuca - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, B potential - 42.0865210262939 overall (143th best DT)

Bowling Green has a nasty room full of studs. An A and B+ senior this year, they have another pair of B and up upperclassmen. Luis and Gil were a good pair who fit the mold of "sit 2-3 years and then pop off". Last year they signed the 2nd best DT croot in Jasper Chunk. Jasper is an absolute monster nose tackle who projects as both an immediate impact player and future 1st round selection.

#3: Tulane - 140.33

2023 DT Forest Rutledge - Nose Tackle 4*, B overall, B+ potential - 52.98674 overall (6th best DT)

2022 DT Timothy Beatty - Balanced 4*, C overall, C potential - 44.8184254956628 overall (54th best DT)

2022 DT James Sherlin - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, A- potential - 42.5282489157357 overall (124th best DT)

Tulane went off on a couple different directions at DT. They got a high potential pass rusher, a balanced 4-star, and the gem in Forest Rutledge. I'm curious to see if they run a 3-4 or a 4-3. I think they have good LBs in which case Forest is the perfect guy to man the middle and be spelled by Timothy Beatty.

#2: Texas Tech - 141.6

2023 DT Carlos Guerrero - Balanced 5*, B overall, B potential - 53.4386 overall (4th best DT)

2022 DT Jason Morris - Pass Rusher 4*, C overall, A- potential - 46.6081745662946 overall (16th best DT)

2021 DT Christian Harris - Balanced 3*, C overall, B- potential - 41.5991353343305 overall (169th best DT)

Texas Tech continues their under the radar talent acquisition program. This cycle they landed 5* Carlos Guerrero (if you remember, they also added a 5* DE this year). The last 2 years they also signed some good players and Jason Morris in particular should blossom nicely. I think they have a pretty near-perfect recruiting setup to run a dominant 4-3 line.

#1: Tennessee - 145.99

2022 DT Ernesto Moran - Pass Rusher 5*, B overall, D+ potential - 52.1251041666667 overall (8th best DT)

2021 DT Johnathan Sowell - Nose Tackle 4*, B overall, B- potential - 50.6912434895834 overall (9th best DT)

2021 DT Brad Johnson - Balanced 3*, C overall, B+ potential - 43.1790911985391 overall (115th best DT)

2022 DT Jonathan Key - Pass Rusher 3*, C overall, A+ potential - 42.0153307001225 overall (144th best DT)
