Recruiting U series! The Offensive Line

Recommended Posts

As we are nearing the end of the third sim recruiting cycle let's take a walk down memory lane and see which teams are leading at recruiting each position. This week we move to offensive line

Methodology: So I have a "score" for every recruit in the sim thus far. It is basically my (educated) assumption of their starting overall + 2.5 years of progressions. So these player scores are my rough estimate for how good a player will be as a ~RS JR / Senior. Of course this is not precise, some will over-perform or under-progress but I think it's the best metric there is. In any case, for offensive line we are taking the top SIX recruits for each school at any OL position (OT/OG/C) and simply adding them together and then ranking the schools.

Without further Ado:

#5: Michigan- 294.9

2022 OG Michael Skinner - Run Blocking 4*, C overall, A- potential - 47.147208023544 overall (148th best OL)

Michigan only signed 1 OL in 2021, but he was a monster 5* who is already starting-quality as a sophomore. The last 2 cycles they've realized they need a lot of bodies: and they got depth, 5 OL between the 100-150th best in these cycles has them well positioned for the future. They have an ok balance with 4 OT and 2 OG (no Cs) so not the most positional flexibility, but the guys are very very good.

#4: Washington State - 298.5

2022 OT Chris Cui - Balanced 4*, B overall, B+ potential - 53.1058333333334 overall (20th best OL)

2021 OG Robert Tartt - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, A potential - 52.7745486111112 overall (27th best OL)

2023 OT Don Guido - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, B potential - 52.54907 overall (33th best OL)

2023 OG Douglas Mcintosh - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, B- potential - 48.22267 overall (132th best OL)

2022 OT Dean Wall - Run Blocking 4*, C overall, B- potential - 46.2567708333334 overall (174th best OL)

2022 C Joseph Reid - Run Blocking 4*, C overall, B- potential - 45.6015760532836 overall (202th best OL)

Washington State has signed a monster each of the last 3 cycles. I like their consistency and spacing, as well as their positionality with 3 OT, 2 OG and 1 C here. They should be able to play everyone at their natural positions plus these guys all have high potential so they'll get even better in the future. All run blocking except 1 balanced means road grade season is soon to be upon us.

#3: Tennessee - 301.1

2023 OT David France - Pass Blocking 5*, B overall, B potential - 55.16535 overall (5th best OL)

2023 OG Charles Le - Pass Blocking 5*, B overall, C potential - 52.65006 overall (28th best OL)

2021 OT Myles Hernandez - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 49.6650781250001 overall (93th best OL)

2022 OG James Hilton - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, C potential - 48.9539583333334 overall (123th best OL)

2022 OT Jason Bush - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 48.2787500000001 overall (131th best OL)

2021 OT Garrett Lazard - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, D+ potential - 46.3902083333334 overall (169th best OL)

2022 OG Nicholas Crosby - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 46.1933333333334 overall (177th best OL)

Tennessee has all OT and OGs here (well they got a C too but he missed the top-200 cutoff to be shown). They also have majority pass blockers and Jason Bush able to sub in if they want to go run heavy. 7 B overall signees is quite a lot, although they don't have the highest potentials. this will be a group that can start early, but won't top out as the best unit in the country.

#2: UNLV - 306.75

2023 OG Milton Fudge - Run Blocking 5*, B overall, C potential - 53.9582 overall (14th best OL)

2022 OG David Lowery - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 52.9235416666667 overall (23th best OL)

2022 OG Peter Ahlstrom - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C potential - 51.8451041666667 overall (43th best OL)

2021 OT Jahlil Jones - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.5434815880349 overall (110th best OL)

2022 OT Herman Cheeks - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.3331250000001 overall (112th best OL)

2021 OG Arrion Lowry - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, C- potential - 49.1552083333334 overall (120th best OL)

2023 C Adrian Galindo - Line Captain 4*, C overall, B potential - 45.67526 overall (194th best OL)

As some declare them: OL-U, UNLV actually places second here. They have SO much depth here, and have all run blockers plus a line captain. This squad is basically Tennessee's but better. Good position spread, good spread across classes, they all fit the scheme, A+ job.

#1: Houston - 312.5

2023 OT Gerardo Delgadillo - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, A+ potential - 55.27733 overall (3th best OL)

2023 OG Martin Montero - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, A+ potential - 54.91105 overall (7th best OL)

2021 OG Josh Davis - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, B+ potential - 51.4848958333334 overall (45th best OL)

2023 OG James Lamb - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, C+ potential - 50.97686 overall (57th best OL)

2021 C Jeff Walker - Run Blocking 4*, B overall, B- potential - 50.6912434895834 overall (68th best OL)

2022 OT Robert Villar - Pass Blocking 4*, B overall, C potential - 49.1435416666667 overall (121th best OL)

Houston gets an A++ though. Unlike the last two schools, Houston hasn't signed a 5 star. What they have signed are 2 high-4*s with A+ potentials. Matching that with another batch of B overall high potential guys means this is a squad that can both start early AND turn into 1st round draft picks. A great mix of positions, plus a mix of run- and pass-blockers means there really isn't a hole I can point to in this unit. Straight dominant.
