Recruiting U series! The Tight Ends

Recommended Posts

As we are nearing the end of the third sim recruiting cycle let's take a walk down memory lane and see which teams are leading at recruiting each position. This week: Tight End ;)

Methodology: So I have a "score" for every recruit in the sim thus far. It is basically my (educated) assumption of their starting overall + 2.5 years of progressions. So these player scores are my rough estimate for how good a player will be as a ~RS JR / Senior. Of course this is not precise, some will over-perform or under-progress but I think it's the best metric there is. In any case, for tight ends we are taking the top TWO recruits for each school and simply adding them together and then ranking the schools.

Without further Ado:

Honorable mentions:

Oklahoma State - 88.06

2021 TE Mike Andrews - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall A potential, TX

2021 TE Deontay Korecky - Receiving 3*, C overall B potential, TX

Texas State - 88.07

2021 TE Darrius Davis - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall C+ potential, FL

2022 TE George Berriel - Receiving 3*, C overall, A- potential, Port Arthur TX

San Diego State - 88.12

2021 TE Andrew Speaks - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall C+ potential, MD

2023 TE Herman Robinson - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall B potential, Covina CA

Bowling Green - 88.51

2021 TE Caleb Sierra - Receiving 4*, C overall C+ potential, MD

2022 TE Irvin Barlow - Receiving 4*, C overall C+ potential, Archbold OH

New Mexico - 88.58

2021 TE Trae March-Lillard - Receiving 4*, C overall B potential, GA

2022 TE Juan King - Blocking 3*, C overall A potential, Alcoa TN

#5: Tulsa- 89.22

2021 TE Jordan Wilds - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall B potential, OH, 45.917 overall (11th best TE)

2023 TE Kyle Bitzan - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall B- potential, Clearwater FL, 44.81 overall (33rd best TE)

Tulsa had a sparse TE room, but in 2021 went out and got a very good TE. Already a B overall as a RS FR, he's TE2 in the room and will be #1 (and 1 of only 2) TE in the room next year. That was a win, but of course they don't want to go with only 2 TEs rostered. This cycle they got a very solid recruit in Kyle Bitzan (they only sign vertical threats) who will also be a startable option early in his career.

#4: Utah State - 89.34

2021 TE Eric Hosmer - Blocking 4*, C overall B- potential, LA, 45.658 overall (16th best TE)

2021 TE Blake Su'a-Filo - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall C+ potential, GA, 45.107 overall (29th best TE)

2023 TE John Love - Vertical threat 3*, C overall A potential, Las Vegas NV, 43.14 overall (93rd best TE)

Utah State has a very, very good TE room. They've also been upgrading it. 2021 was a great double dip with twin blue chips, blocking and a vertical threat. Both guys will be B+ overalls at minimum next season AND they have another A potential recruit coming in. The future looks very bright here.

#3: West Virginia - 89.99

2022 TE Juan Corral - Vertical threat 4*, C overall B potential, Virginia Beach VA, 45.934 overall (9th best TE)

2023 TE Derek Bryan - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall B+ potential, Charleston WV, 45.44 overall (19th best TE)

West Virginia was generated with a VERY bad roster. Almost anything would be an upgrade and while it took a year, they've turned around the TE room. They had 0 good TEs for this season, and Juan Corral is unfortunately not an immediate plug and play guy. What he is is the future of the position with the high potential. They're also bringing in a third TE next year with Derek Bryan who will fit in perfectly down the line. Again, the room isn't filled up, but has good high end talent in the wings.

#2: Kansas - 91.38

2021 TE Steel Blue - Receiving 4*, C overall A- potential, OR, 47.21 overall (4th best TE)

2022 TE Travis Campbell - Receiving 4*, C overall B- potential, Thorntown IN, 45.197 overall (22nd best TE)

2022 TE Frank Greco - Vertical Threat 4*, C overall C+ potential, Wilmington NC, 44.791 overall (34th best TE)

2021 TE Travis Siegrist - Blocking 4*, C overall C- potential, TX, 44.377 overall (50th best TE)

In contrast Kansas has a VERY full TE room. They use them more than receivers. They've also done a phenomenal job at recruiting the room. Steel Blue isn't just an all-name candidate, he's a B overall soph with very high potential and a top-5 all time TE croot. They also signed 3 other blue chip TEs who are top-50 at the position. They now have 6 underclassmen tight ends and all 6 are capable FBS starters. You just wonder if they'll be able to kick them out and play at WR or if they'll just run constant Jumbo steps.

#1: Colorado - 97.403

2022 TE Kenneth Ring - Blocking 5*, B overall C potential, Dalton GA, 52.793 overall (2nd best TE)

2021 TE Raymond Perez - Receiving 4*, C overall C potential, UT, 44.609 (44th best TE)

You might think Kansas is TE-U (and they are), but Colorado has better recruits actually. Kenneth Ring is a VERY good player, there are hardly any 5* TEs and he's one of them. As a freshman he's already the best TE on their roster, but they ALSO signed Raymond Perez the year before who's a perfectly good starter. The 2 of them are a fearsome duo, and the best TE pair signed by any program.
