[2023] Recruiting Class Grades Batch 8

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again! Time to hand out recruiting class grades!

I know these have been slowing down recently but work has been a lot, so it's been on the backburner

This is the eighth batch so don't worry I'll (eventually) do you if you want me to

A quick note: everything should be explanatory, but the rankings are: ESPN and Rivals per the interface along with 247, Ezaco's SSEC rankings are without regional bonuses, and the top-15 versions are just taking into account the top-15 croots signed. Average Rank tosses out high and low ranks and averages remainder

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status # SignedRecruiting statusGrade
CC+They have 2 mediocre 2-stars who aren't P5 starter level, but they did find a diamond in their RS Soph from MN. A B- already with A- potential despite his 2 star status, Kyle should have 3 years of starting in the middle of the line1They redshirted Deontez Edmonds last year, who made pretty good improvement but is still not going to be a great player for their future. This year they added a 3-star line captain who should be the 2nd string alreadyC+
CBC+A perfectly serviceable room (generally). They have an A- and a B overall man coverage guys as their starters. Unfortunately the next 3 best players are all zone so they have to hope they don't run out 3 or more corners too often. I am curious what they'll do in the future as they signed a 3 star zone and 1 star man guy last year3THey added a trio of good corners this year which was nice to see and would ordinarily be a highlight class. However that was somewhat undercut when you see that they still are mix and matching schemes with the 3-star signees being man coverage and the B overall 4 star jewel being a zone guy. Very unsure of this strategy as next year they'll have 3 serviceable man ocver corners and 3 servicable zone guysB-
DEC+They have a couple of B overalls, but no real standout on the roster. Looking to the future they redshirted last year's signees (an average 3 and an A potential 2) so it will be several more years until they have an impact room2They added a pair of 3 stars here and it looks to really raise the floor as they progress through the programC
DTB+This is a good looking room. Carl Melton is an A+ potential 3 star who has hit A overall this year as a senior star. They also have a B+ overall junior and redshirted a B overall freshman from last season so they have a deep pipeline2This is definitely a team strength as they picked up one of the better DTs in the country with Randolph Hancox and paired him with a 3-star Joshua Shaw. They are going to be stout in the middle for at least the next 4 yearsB
FBB-Only one guy but he's a future star: 3 star soph with A+ potential. Could even be a receiving threat out of the backfield1Added a rushing version for his backup with B potential 3 starC
FSBA great future here. They have an A- Junior already at the helm, and then an A- potential sophomore who should grow as a backup and start when he's a senior1Added just a depth piece but that's all they neededC
ILBC-A little rougher here. They have Jeremy Arano who is an A- overall to star this year, but then next year they're looking at a pair of 2 star C overalls which just won't cut it in the PAC1Picking up an A- 3-star was a good move. He may actually develop enough this year to be the starter next season so definitely a good pickupC+
KCPretty average group. A B overall junior is fine for a kicker, and then they took a 2-star last year. Might want to get a development guy this year1Yep they did so. B potential 3 star is perfect to sit 2 and play 2 and be a good optionC+
OGC+There's a positive outlook here, but not dominant by any means. Utah has a B+ RS SO who is a long term option at one end (and with A+ potential will be a monster his senior year). The other end is in flux though with a B overall senior this year and ostensibly their 3 star signee from last season after that. They do need a few bodies though2Great pickups. Francisco Santiago may be the best player in the class with a B overall and A- potential he is dominant and will pair extremely well with Mortensen. They also got a good potential 3 starA-
OLBC+They're fine here, OLB is a sparse position nationwide but they ahve a trio of B potential players including two with sophomore eligibility which is very good. They also took an additional 3 star last year for depth. They have options for sure2Added two more solid 3 star players. This room has depth and some star power now (along with a good variety of archetypes)C+
OTB+Very good room here. They have their A overall senior starter at LT who can do anything, and then a trio of B overall options including a RS SO and RS FR, meaning those two will be able to pair up for the next several years of good protection2Added 2 high potential 3 stars as developmental prospects was a nice move since they won't need to start right awayC+
PC+They have a B- junior power punter who can boot it and will be fine for these 2 years. they took a B potential 2 star last cycle as well to groom1Not strictly necessary, but they added a B potential 3 star who is an upgrade over last year's signee. C+
QBB-The upperclassmen options are underwhelming at best, but Utah swung last year and landed Alcides Holden, a 4 star B+ potential scrambler who they wanted to be their future. He took a redshirt year and is going to be in a position battle this spring1They went out again and signed more competition. Jeffrey Wolfe also boasts a 4-star pedigree, and is a balanced option vs. the scrambler Alcides. Either one could be the long term futureB
RBB+Great stock in this position. They have an A- senior and junior this year (both speed backs) so they have top-end talent. They also signed a power back 4 star last year so they have the B overall freshman eligibility to grow and become another A player in the future. This room looks much more promising than QB1Added another power back, this time with high potential development as a 3 starC
SSCA fairly average room. An A- senior, then a drop to their C+ junior option. last year they also signed a C overall player who seemed to not progress. Very underwhelming1This year they signed another 3 star, and they hope he shows a little bit better development than last yearsC
TEC-Rough options here. The only starter capable player is B overall Blocking senior. Behind him they have a 2 star (bad) junior, and last years redshirted D overall player. Neither of those guys should be playing let alone starting. This room needs an upgrade1They did add a 3 star here who at worst is an upgrade at TE2 for the future. They'll probably need another one next year but a good first step to upgrading the roomC+
WRCAnother sparse room. They do have a local kid who's an A- senior as a good top option, and then a B+ junior behind him. Beyond that though... straight to C+ players. Last year they did sign an A- potential 3 star and an A potential 2 star so those players could pan out well but they'll have likely 2 years of growing pains as a team2Wow huge improvements here. What a great upgrade class. A B potnetial 4 star and B potential 3 star are the 2 most talented players in the whole room and could be starting by next year. Great pickupsB

I think this was a really good, if low-key class. They added a ton of talent, and are one of very few teams to sign 25 3 star or better players. They addressed pretty much every room with at minimum raising the talent floor. They had a good spread between positions without overloading anywhere or neglecting anything. While some of the pieces may not wind up being integral to the team they are all going to be good glue and at minimum solid depth which is sorely needed in a team that started the sim at the bottom. Another year of a class like this and Utah will have the base to start competing for the conference

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# SignedCrooting StatusGrade
CCThis room is not as bad as I initially thought. They have a B overall starter as a RS JR, meaning 2 years of relatively good play while their RS SO with B+ potential develops and then starts as a senior. Having only 2 players just isn't enough though2Signing two alleviates the numbers issue, but both are D overall 2-stars and I wouldn't trust either to develop into a starter. They need someone good next cycleD+
CBB-More options here, and they get a bump for being a clear man coverage team. They have their A- B+ guys at the top, and bonus points for having a RS FR B overall down the pipe. Nice work (although they probably need 2 to balance numbers for the future)1Only signed one player, but he's an A- potential 3 star which is actually pretty good. I think he'll get playing time as an upperclassmanC+
DECThey have two pretty good B-/B+ seniors for this year, but when they graduate they only have Ricky Marte, a B overall RS SO behind them. Everyone else is just meh and will be C+ at best. They did pickup a pair of 3 stars last year who could blossom in the future though5Ok signing 5 guys is a bit overboard here. Berna is their lone 4-star signee and would have made this a successful class on his own. They also added an average 3 star (good), and then 3 development 2-stars (entirely too many). While DE may be deep, I think those scholarships could have better uses elsewhereC+
DTB-I think they run a 3-4, so having two good seniors is more than enough, especially with a B+ RS SO waiting in the wings. They do need another guy behind him though for the future1They added a D overall 2 star with C potential. This is not the kind of guy that should be starting and this will be an important position to focus on next cycleD+
FBC-One player, a blocking C+ SO fullback. Meh0Didn't sign any-
FSCThey have a really good senior, and then next year will be relying on only 1 player in the room, a C overall with C+ potential. They need more players2Signing two is good. One of them having D overall is not good. The other one at leastis a C overall with C+ potential so that is viable as a backup. I'd like to see a good 3 star or 4 star here next cycle thoughC-
ILBBThree 4-stars on ther oster is really good, especially when 2 of them are B overalls from last years class. Great signees and the future looks very bright (4 overall players from last year)1They took a ton last year, and this is the perfect time to just scoop up an A potential development 2 starC+
KCIt's fine.They have a B- RS SO kicker, he'll be ok0Didn't sign any-
OGCA normal looking room, if a little empty. One player each of the last 3 years, and the Junior is the A- option. They probably need more talent very soon though because it's emptying out in here0Didn't sign any-
OLBC-Rough spots here. They have a B+ on one side, and then all C's as the other starting option. Interestingly, all 5 rostered players are pass rushers, although only 1 of their 4 non-seniors is a 3 star, so the ceiling is very low for this room. Put simply, they need help2Adding a pair of 3 stars out of Michigan actually goes a long way to boosting this room which is looking like it'll be in dire straits next season. But at least they started the path to building bacvkC
OTB+Lots of options here. An A overall Jr, a B overall Soph, and plenty of 3 star pieces with good development for depth / back-ups. I think they're really good here3They probably didn't need 3, but wow they hit a homerun to pull John Nunez from Florida. An A- potential 5-star, Nunez is a future top-10 draft pick in the making and instantly challenges for a starting spot. He is an absolute beast who can both pass and run block with the best of them. Phenomenal signing at an already loaded positionA
PDThey only have one guy and he's a C overall senior. Punting is at least important enough to need 2 players0Didn't sign any. Next year's signee will be a true freshman starterD-
QBB+They are in really good hands with RS Soph Scott Romero. An A- overall player already, Scott has phenomenal arm talent and the confidence to lead this team as the unquestioned starter1They added a bad 2 star scrambler. He won't play so it doesn't matter, but next year they could look at Scott's future replacementC-
RBB+RB has 4 upperclassmen who are B or A level players. Extremely good and deep. Last year's signees shold be ok with more devlopment time as well. This is a genuinely good room that would be competitive anywhere in the country2I'm not a huge fan of these signees, but they're not the worst. An average 3 star and a bad (but high potential) 2. Very mehC-
SSC+A B- RS SO is a very good option here for the future, and at SS you only need one. They also have a B+ senior for this year, and then some chaff behind them3Three is a bit much for SS, especially when the 3 players are all D overall B potential 2 stars. These aren't future starters, but at least they have a wide variety of archetypesC-
TEC+Not a bad pipeline with a B overall RS SO, and a 4 star signee last year. They haven't blossomed yet but the future seems bright0Didn't sign any-
WRCThey are ... ok. No game breakers, but some solid upperclassmen starters (4 B overalls). Last year they added 4 signees and only one of them seems like he'll be a quality starter. overall it's just ok2They added two more, but again, neither are inspiring. They do have a lot of young players though so the hope is that odds are that one will turn into a starC-

This was a very underwhelming class. Ball State actually has a lot of really good upperclassmen and could challenge for the conference this year (or at least would if they didn't have playoff teams to try and unseat). Unfortunately once those players cycle out they look to have some drop off. They signed a lot of layers at some positions, and none at others and their scholarship management is a little unbalanced. They also signed way too many mediocre 2 stars who aren't going to make much of an impact. THey did get John Nunez who is amazing, but on the whole they need to step up recruiting next season

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# SignedCroot StatusGrade
CCThey have a B overall junior for the next two seasons, but that's pretty much it in this room1Definitely needed this. A 3 star with A- potential, Ketema gets 2 years to develop and then star as a likely high B player down the line. Nice getB-
CBB-A very good trio of players with A-/B+/B overalls, all of whom are returning for at least another year. Right now though, they're still graduating out some of their zone corners and switching to man so it'll be an awkward transition2Signed 2 players, an average 3 and a high development 2. Just okC+
DEB+An incredibly strong group of players here. They have 3 blue chips, and 2 sophomore eligible B overalls. This could be the strength of the team2They added another two solid development 3 stars who will have time to learn from the upperclassmen and growC
DTB+Another strong room here. THey have multiple A players including 5 star Junior Denver Litton, and signed an A potential 3 star last year who made the jump to B- while redshirted1They added an average 3 this year, but I don't think they'll be counting on him muchC
FBC+A junior B- player is the guy in this room. To be seen if they want to carry FBs on roster2They added two of them, interesting. A 3 star C overall, and an A potential 2 star will duel it out in practice for the next starting spotC
FSBAnother very deep room. A B+ senior, and then two sophomore eligible B overalls. They'll have years of good play from them1Adding a B- potential 3 star is very nice. He is assuredly going to sit for three years so plenty of time to developC+
ILBB-I think they run a 4-3, so with only one starting spot they're in good shape. An A- senior and B+ RS Soph are good enough for several years, although there really aren't any other players rostered that impress me right now1They added another average 3 who is just depth. I think next year they need to make a swing for a game changer hereC
KB-This is quite a habit of very good seniors and very good RS Sophs behind them. Same thing here with a B overall sophomore for the future once Contreras leaves. 0Didn't sign any-
OGB-Their other 5 star on the roster, A.J. Kanter is an A overall RS SO who is going to spend 3 years as a wall on the line. The only issue is all three of their signees last year looked pretty mediocre so they need someone to take that next step next to him2They signed an above average potential 3 and 2 star so they have more lotterly tickets for that development to actually happenC
OLBB-Good upperclassmen and then a step back. This year they have an A overall on one side and a pair of B- junior options for the other. They signed 3 players last year but all of them remained Cs. I think they have high enough potentials though that you can expect them to progress well2Added a nice coverage 3 star and a higher development 2 this cycleC+
OTBNice squad here of 4 rostered tackles. The two seniors are A and B+ overall run/pass blockers here for this season. Then the other two are both RS Soph B overall Run blockers with B+ potential. They will take over for the next two years and be good players in their own right.2Keeping the trend of a pair of signees every other class. These two are both identical balanced 3 stars with B potential, and look like the next bonded pair to get starting slots in three yearsC+
PCAverage here. They have a C+ sophomore I guess, not that impressive1Added another 3 star just in case, but I don't know how he'll be better than last year's signee.C
QBB-They have an ok succession plan in place. Lance enright is an A overall balanced QB who is capable of leading this team to a lot of victories as part of his swan song. Once he goes pro though, they'll likely have Adam Outman (the Georgia QBs cousin actually) as the next man up. Current RS SO pocket with B- overall. Nobody else on roster should be throwing passes2They have some very good options signed here. Knowing they'd be sitting for a few years they went for the high development players with A potential 3 star scrambler and B potential Pocket QB Tanner. These guys could play for a year or 2 down the line depending on what offense Wisconsin decides to runC+
RBB-An abundance of high B options, but I don't know that any gamebreakers are here. The closest is Ruben Peters, a RS SO receiving back with B overall and A potential. If he progresses well he could turn into a monster but we will see2They added and redshirted two A potential players last year and are likely to do the same now. 4 freshman eligible players with A/B potential is a lot of options for senior starsC+
SSC+Not that impressive relative to the other rooms. They have a lot of average potential three stars, but none have yet shown that they can be the guy here. They will get better next year but it's pretty mid right now1Picked up another mid 3 to join the club. Maybe he'll pan out? Somewhat of a step down from other rooms thoughC
TEC+Another unimpressive group, these 2/3 stars just aren't progressing the same way. They do have a B overall RS JR who can play, but the others will be lucky to hit B+ by their senior year (although at least they have good hadns)1Picked up another high potential vertical threat 3 star. Could this be the one who actually rises to his potential?C+
WRC+This is a solid room as well. A group of B overalls, and then the underclassmen are A potentials as well. It's not as flashy as a lot of teams but they can probably get the job done, although they may need more floor players2Adding a pair of very high potential 3s was a great move and bolsters this room for when the upperclassmen start graduating. I think they will probably just grab a few bodies next yearB-

This is a very well rounded team right now with great succession plans at a lot of positions. I honestly think that they can contend for the B1G West this season which is always good news. As for recruiting this year: It was a mixed bag. They didn't have many standout players, but considering their current roster very few of them would start anyways. Instead they signed a lot of high potential 3 stars which I think will pay off in the long run even if it isn't sexy right now. Look for a bit of a U shape as they have a good season this year, a slight step back next year, and then roaring back again beyond that

Hm, Wisconsin's Class Grade feels high if you gave Ball State a C-. I actually thought, based on your analysis that Ball State was pretty alright. A good chunk of higher potential guys, so could be quite competitive in 2 or 3 yrs. Though not as good as Wisconsin in terms of potential.

Wisconsin was borderline with a C+. And while they may have high potential, a lot of those 2-stars Ball State picked up were D overalls. C overalls with high potential I’d look at much more favorably

went with a safe approach this year recruiting being my first with the team and working at getting better at the recruiting game. Will be looking to fill in more gaps with the next recruiting cycle.
