[2023] Recruiting Class Grades Batch 7

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again! Time to hand out recruiting class grades!

This is the seventh batch so don't worry I'll (eventually) do you if you want me to

A quick note: everything should be explanatory, but the rankings are: ESPN and Rivals per the interface along with 247, Ezaco's SSEC rankings are without regional bonuses, and the top-15 versions are just taking into account the top-15 croots signed. Average Rank tosses out high and low ranks and averages remainder

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# signedRecruiting StatusCroot Grade
CBA big gap here. They have a top-tier A overall senior in the starting slot now, hard to ask for more. Behind him though is only 1 player, last year's average 3 star signee who was redshirted. A C overall this year, they are in for a big regression if he's next years starter2They decided to recruit over him and got a pair of great players (both line captains). Derik Null is a blue chip B overall who will almost certainly take over the starting role next year. They also added a high potential 3 for future developmentB+
CBBAnother top-heavy group. A pair of A- players and a B- backup is really solid. Unfortunately next year 2 of them graduate and last year they only signed (and redshirted) 1 player, an average 3 star so they need to replenish a fair bit of talent3Just what I would've wanted to see. They got a blue chip B overall who can step in as CB2 next season, as well as another pair of 3 star C overall bodies for depth and development.B-
DEBBetter shape here. Still the A- / B overall upperclassmen at the top, but one of their B overall / B- potentials is a RS SO they'll have for another 2 years after this. Last year they didn't sign any players though2Added a great pair to make up for last years miss. Another blue chip with B- potential and a 3 star with the same development potential both should be future starters. Also interesting is that after this years seniors graduate they'll have all run stoppers so they are quite consistent in their targetsB-
DTBA bit subprime at the top with only a B+ as the best player, but he's a junior and coming back next year while they currently have a B overall RS FR who is the future starter already1Not a huge need with last years crop, and they just took a 3 star for future depth / development work.C
FBBB+ overall senior, bit of a lull, and then last year they RS'd a blue chip prospect who will start next year. Common theme through these first position groups and as a concept I like it1Added a terrible prospect here, I can only assume this was a walkon they graciously allowed to join the teamC
FSB-Another room with an A- senior who is a stud in the backend. Unfortunately this one didn't have as great a class last year with 2 RS'd signees, neither of whom is above a C overall right now. They need a big jump this offseason to avoid a hole1Added another average 3 star prospect, but given the 2 players last year are better and have the same eligibility, Dunn will likely just be depth in his careerC
ILBCThe first room without a true top-level talent. They have a pair of B- overalls as their starters, and then a couple of Cs. They also don't really have much waiting in the wings here either. This is definitely the soft middle of a great looking defense1Adding a single average 3 star isn't the remedy. When looking at the DE and DTs I thought this was going to be a 3-4 defense, but I don't know that they have the ILBs to run that really. Priority for next seasonC
KB-Good players, B+ senior, B junior. didn't sign any last year so they'll probably need to either RS the junior or pickup their future starter this cycle0Well they didn't sign anyone. Must-do for next yearC
OGBA- Junior overall is the best guy in the romo and they'll have for next year. The 2 seniors are good as well. After they graduate though, the only guy left in the room will be RS FR C overall from last years class. They should probably sign someone so they'll have more than 2 non-freshman next season1Added a very, very average 3 star. Would've liked to see 2 signees here and they need bodies next yearC-
OLBA-Best room on the team so far. An A overall A+ potential senior, Gray will be a high draft pick in next years class. On the opposite side they have an A- overall A- potential Jr who should be another A overall next year. They also added a blue chip last cycle who's a B overall already and is next in the straight-to-NFL pipeline here. Only 3 players overall though so a little bit of depth concern2They alleviate that with their 4th straight blue chip signing here along with another 3 star to bolster their numbers. Nice workB
OTBVery solid room overall. A overall balanced OT locking down one side (and a probable 1st rounder next year) with a trio of B overalls for the other side option. The pair of juniors will be strong starters next year. The weak point is that they signed and redshirted a C overall last year who hasn't made the jump. Need a pair of good prospects this year2They added an average 3 star and a total dud walkon who I'm not counting as part of this team. They now have only 2 underclassmen, both C overalls. Along with a weak-ish OG recent class the OL should be a target ASAPC
PCA very average Junior player is the only guy here. Sign his replacement1And they do. One of the few blue chip punters, Kessler has this position satisfied for the next 3 years before they need to sign anotherB
QBBRight now I only see one P5 level starter in this room. Tanner Rodriguez is a junior field general B+ overall who is a very solid option for the next 2 years. Depth-wise though I wouldn't trust any of the players behind him, and last years two signees haven't shown any indication that they could be ready2They added a bad scrambler (who cares) and then got one of the better prospects: Balanced QB David Ferguson. With the 4 star pedigree and B- potential, David is almost assuredly the starter once Rodriguez leaves. Good getB
RBB+Not a ton of high end talent at the top with no A overalls, they do have a B overall Jr, and then last year they redshirted a 4 star who jumped into B overall territory and will be the future starter2They weren't satisfied with just the one blue chipper as they went out and signed a local 4 star speedster to give them a talented 1-2 punch of freshman eligibility playersB
SSB+Their best option in the room is actually last years run stopper Cheslor Dickerson who is a B overall B- potential player. He'll have 3 years of starts and they do have some solid depth options as well.1Added an atrocious walkon but not the worst spot for itC
TEC+Ok options here with a B and B- overall Sr/Jr but last year they just took an average 3 star1Added a blue chip receiving threat here to take over once the upperclassmen leave. Looks like they'll consistently have a good TE1C+
WRBThe A- and B juniors will be deadly next year (and the pair of B+ seniors makes 4 great options), but last year they signed 4 3-stars and all of them remained within the C range. They have plenty of numbers so hopefully this year they added 1 or 2 high talent / potential guys2Instead they added 2 bad walkons. A big miss in this class and that means next year they'll rely on a few signees and can't just go big game huntingD+

Overall this was an interesting class. They had a better class last year that had a lot of potential, but of course there were plenty of positions that relied on signing some good players in this class. For the msot part, they were able to hit where they needed, and overall the talent they brought in is top-half of the PAC level. They did have a few misses but nothing insurmountable, although next year's signees will be quite pivotal especially on the OL if they want to maintain their talent advantage in conference

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

CC+A solid group here but nothing outstanding. They have a 5th year Senior at starter with a B+ overall, and then a B- junior behind him, but they didn't sign a player last cycle meaning next year they will have only one player in the room (albeit a B overall likely)2Perfect time to sign 2. Both players are blue chip prospects, a run blocker and a balanced player meaning Kansas has the flexibility to redshirt them or flex one out to another line position if neededB+
CBB+Incredibly well developed group here. A pair of A- overall sniors, and then a B+ junior and 3 other B overall players is extremely deep and will be for several years. Last year they redshirted their 3 signees and should be set for a while. A little ding for mis-matched man vs. zone, but overall very solid0Didn't sign any, but with 3 RS FR it's not really an issue-
DEB+Pretty much the same as CB, they have tons of talent. A pair of A overall senior speed rushers are phenomenal anchors for this defense and they have a B+ junior who will likely become one next year. They also have another trio of B overalls as depth including last years 4-star signee.1They signed 2 last year so 1 this year is fine numbers-wise, and James is a B+ potential speed rusher who wil have a few years to developC+
DTBVery strong interior DL, but a lot less depth than the DE and CBs. THey have only the one senior, and their underclassmen haven't been lookin extremely promising yet. 1Average 3 star here, but they have another RS FR so they didn't need that much here. C
FBBThey have an A- overall senior who fits the programs ethos, and then last year they added an A- potential receiving threat and B+ potential rusher so they have several options for the future1Somehow improved over last year with a 4 star signee. They now have 3 very good options at FB, and honestly will need to flex one somewhere else to get optimal usage out of anyB
FSBAnother room with a good pipeline for the next few years. A B+ senior is a good starter, with a B- junior behind him. Last year they added a 3 star who is still a C overall, so tough to see if in the long-run they have a very solid player who can step up.3Added 3 really good options: a 4-star ball hawker and a a pair of B potential ball hawk / run stoppers. Maybe a bit of overkill but almost assuredly one of these guys will be a starB
ILBCThe upperclassmen here are pretty rough, 3 options all 2-stars who look pretty iffy. This is definitely a weak spot on the roster. Last year they added a pair of 3-stars who will be upgrades but probably 2 more years before that comes through1Added another average 3-star to continue raising the floor with depthC
KB+Best option here looks like their signee from last year: a 4-star B overall with B- potential. That means the next 3 years are pretty set on this front0Didn't sign any-
OGBVery very good upperclassmen and then a drop off. 3 seniors: A, B+, B is fantastic, but then they have only 1 other player for next year: a junior B- overall. Whoever they sign will get a year of growth and then have a starting chance1Would've loved to see them get 2, but at least they nabbed a blue-chip who will be able to step in next year as a viable optionC+
OLBBTons of good underclassment options, but not a lot currently. They have only one good upperclassmen and this year will be pretty weak. Last year though they signed a 4-star, a high potential 3, and they have a RS SO B- overall as well2They signed another 4-star to pair with last years redshirted player along with an A potential 3-star. very, very good futureB
OTBAnother really good intermediate pipeline. Their senior run blocker is a B+ overall, but they have 3 more B overalls with at least 1 remaining year. Last year they added a pair of 3-stars who haven't looked phenomenal yet, but there is still time to add game-changers or develop well2Added a pair of even higher potential 3-stars to complement last yearsC+
PCThey signed a punter ever year, but none of them have made it out of the C range so nobody is a good option for a while1Woo this is a major upgrade even if he is the 4th punter in the room. An A overall 4-star is one of the best possible options and they are definitely good for a whileB+
QBB+They have a few options here, and the best one is RS SO scrambler Tyler Summers. They have ok backups as well so this is a fairly good room all things considered. This is also the year to start grooming future options.3They nabbed 3 of those future options although they only needed 1. Joeseph Perkins is the blue chip B- potential balanced QB who is the assumed future of the program, but they also took a pair of WI 3-star scramblers who could potentially push himB
RBB+An A overall speed back is going to be their main threat, and they have him returning next year as well. They also have a B overall receiving junior as a change of pace option. Last year's RS FR is a B- potential option who will need a few good development years to match the talent at the top.2Adding a power and speed back is a great group with both having good development prospects. I think they'll be quite good in the futureC+
SSCPretty meh here. They have a RS JR B overall starter, but only 1 other player: JR 2-star behind him.Need another player for sure1Fuentes is a zone coverage 3-star who may not pop off the page, but will be a fine replacement-level starter in 2 years and is better than a hole in the depth chartC
TEA-This is clearly the pride of the Kansas program. They have an A overall senior to set the tone here, and then a B- Jr behind him. Last year they also added a trio of great prospects including a 4-star B overall, a redshirted 4-star, and an in-state 3-star farm boy blocker3They went in on TE again this cycle with 3 more pass-catching options: a pair of blue chips (B- potential) and another 3 star option. They now have 5 guys with freshman eligibility who could be starting caliberA-
WRB-WR is definitely less prioritized for this offense. They have a trio of very good seniors who are great possession players, along with a pair of RS SO B overall high potential options. Last year they kind of punted and only signed a single 3 star1Only guy they added here was a local 1-star, but I'm assuming they would rather run 3 or 4-TE sets than invest in WRsD

Kansas has a fun offensive identity. Go heavy on the TE/FB combo as a stark contrast to the air raids a lot of other Big 12 programs are embracing and pair it with a great ground game and run blocking offensive lineman. They also have very good CBs and pass rushers on the DL, so even though there are a few weak points, they can hang with any team in the conference. I like that they have a clear program identity, and even if they don't have the highest recruiting rankings, this is good roster construction for a geographically disadvantaged program

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# signedCroot statusCroot grade
CCThey only have 2 here. Their B+ senior is great, but he's leaving and then they will have a mediocre 2 star as the only body there1While a C overall 3 star won't be an immediate savior, he was desperately needed and will at minimum be an ok backup option next year with the possibility of developing well as an upperclassmanC+
CBBThey have 3 / 4 phenomenal upperclassmen, and even better is they all share the same archetype. Amir Tankersley is an A overall player who will lock down the MWC this year, and next year Ellenson will take his place as all-conference potential. Unfortunately, those 2 are the only bonafide stars available. They have a B- senior who is passable as CB3, but looking at next year they have slim pickings for CB2 and beyond. The other Junior is a 2 star who has had just ok development, and last year they added another pair of mediocre 2s2Well, one of these additions is an absolutely horrid walk-on kind of player, but the other is a 3 star with good potential and actually has the potential to be CB4 this season. Unfortunately he's the only man coverage player they have on roster, so he's either going to be gouged playing his weakness, or this is prescient of an upcoming scheme shift on DC-
DEBEach of the last 3 cycles has seen them sign a good player which is a good enough pipeline when you only need to start 2 at a time. Last year they added a local 4 star run stopper who is now B overall and the brightest future spot here. They also took a pair of 2s who jumped from D to C which was good improvement but they'll need more, at least 1 good player the next 2 classes maintain depth2Well well, same philosophy every year here I guess. They added another 4-star run stopper (this time from Texas) along with a doo-doo walk-on. Still, getting a bluechip is much better than not getting oneB-
DTB-Quite a room for a school like San Jose State. They have a senior A- overall blue chip from KY and a junior of the same from NJ so they were able to pick some great prospects out East earlier. Unfortunately just like CB it quickly falls off as everybody else in the room is a 2-star prospect at best and they would definitely like to raise the upcoming floor1Adding a 3-star is a good step in the right direction to doing so. Ideally they'll add 2 more of these next cycle thoughC
FBCJust an ok room here. A C+ blocking senior doesn't really impress me, and last years 2 star Rushing option hasn't made enough of a jump to look good yet either1Adding another 3 star is a great floor-raising move, and hopefully he pans outC
FSBA very filled room, they have 5 guys currently, and their JR is a solid B overall B- potential and last year saw them pick up a 3-star and ok 2-star. Look for them to either get another 3 star hit to keep up the talent or go big game fishing this cycle1They stuck with the basics, adding an in-state ball hawking 3 star, which certainly is good enough to compete in the MWCC
ILBC-This is a very weak room incoming. There's an A- overall senior manning the middle, and then behind him are 3 straight 2-stars who have not developed particularly well.1Picking up a walk-on isn't going to help much. Next year this needs to be a targetD
KAThey have an A overall player who has to come back next year as well. Big win here, although they should have his replacement coming in at some point because this kid will be hitting the NFL soon1Perfect. A nice 3 star pickup who'll get 2 years of development timeC
OGB-Just like most of the rooms it seems. A really good senior / junior combo, an ok 2nd senior as backup, and then very poor options behind them. They have yet another 4 star A overall here, but last year they signed just 1 2-star so they are a little behind on maintaining both body numbers and talent1A nice floor-raiser in this 3 star pass blocker, but next year they should definitely pick up a pair of playersC
OLBC+Three guys in the romo, B- junior / senior options (just barely passable for conference play) and then a 2-star C overall from last cycle. This is definitely a weak point on D2Nice, adding the C+ potential 3-star is a win here for the future, but the walk on F potential player is basically useless and means they will continue another year of fear of this position group being slightly exposed, or sustaining an injury and being totally exposedC-
OTC+Good pass blocking options with their A- senior and B+ junior. Next year though they again face the ? over who takes over the other side. They did get a 3 star run blocker last cycle which was good, but they need to continue getting options or developing very well2There we go, finally a room with 2 signees where each of them are C overall 3stars instead of one and a walkon. This definitely counts as a base they can build on.C+
PB-Got a good progression from their junior B overall punter who should be solid for the next 2 years. Now is the time to sign and start developing his backup / successor0Didn't sign any-
QBC+Interesting QB options. :A senior pocket B+ overall is actually not bad to get points and wins with this team. Again though, in the future when he graduates the position looks iffy. There will onnly be one player on the roster next year: A current B overall junior. They need at minimum a guy who can be a backup next year and start the year after2They signed a solid depth piece and their hopeful QBOTF: Dung Te. Funny name haha, but he got the blue chip treatment and is likely going to be a B overall QB2 next year and the QB1 for the next 2 after thatB
RBB+They have the B+ Speed back as a senior and a few other B players of all different types currently rostered. The future of this position is last years 4 star power back signee Sean Roberts who is complemented by a speed back 3 star2After signing 3 last year they add another pair this year: both speed guys including a 4-star all the way from West Virginia. Very well setB
SSC-1 player each of the last 3 cycles. All of them are 2-stars. None of them should be starting for a team with SJSU's ambitions. They definitely need an upgrade here (or maybe slide over a FS?)1Added a very average overall 3 star, but that is still good enough to raise the talent level in the room (down the line)C
TEC-Same story as SS. Three straight sub-par 2-stars and they currently have no B overall players and nobody who looks like they will become one2Good floor raising here. A 2 star B- potential is basically what they had the last few years, but they pair him with a 3 star B- potential vertical threat to serve as the future starter hereC+
WRB+A really good room here.THey have an A- senior, and A- junior, and a B- sophomore who should grow into that A- billing in the next 2 years. They are looking at an upcoming depth shortage as everyone else rostered is a 2-star, but some of those have A potentials so even they can turn out well as 9upperclassmen25 signees last year, so they could hold out for only good players this year. They added a 3 star red zone threat and then a 4 star B overall burner as the highlight and best overall of this classB+

San Jose State actually has a really strong roster for this upcoming season. I wouldn't be surprised to see them repeat as conference champions this year and make a playoff push. Their senior class is stacked and they have a lot of high performing juniors. Unfortunately in the future they look to have a lot of drop-offs at a lot of positions. They do have most of their key positions looking good, but it was clear in their class this year they were looking to do some damage control by raising the floor. They mostly signed relatively uninspiring 3-stars but that does re-set the slide and give a solid base to rebuild upon
