[2023] Recruiting Class Grades Batch 6

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again! Time to hand out recruiting class grades!

This is the sixth batch, and I have like 15 more teams to do so don't worry I'll (eventually) do you if you want me to

A quick note: everything should be explanatory, but the rankings are: ESPN and Rivals per the interface along with 247, Ezaco's SSEC rankings are without regional bonuses, and the top-15 versions are just taking into account the top-15 croots signed. Average Rank tosses out high and low ranks and averages remainder

Today's: @ChizDippler @BabaYaga @Ezaco

also I'll be doing the next posts in the order of people who comment, so leave a GOOD NOODLE react to go next

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# OverallRecruiting StatusCroot Grade
CC+A B overall as their best player and then a pair of C+s behind him. Not the strongest interior line I've seen. The good news is the sophomores have A+ potential so in 2 years they will be very very good, but this year and next look to be a bit average1Signed a blue chip in-state line captain prospect. Definitely a nice pickup who should compete for a backup slot this year, but may be outclassed on potential by the guys ahead of him in the long run. Prime RS candidateB-
CBB-Definitely above average, even if they're somewhat old. The B+ senior ball hawk is good and then they have 2 Bs and an A- from their juniors (good development of their 3 stars), followed by another trio of high potential 3 star sophomores. Nice pipeline for the really good, not quite elite room that it projects to be5uh 5 CB signees is a lot. Even more weird when you consider they currently are running a man scheme and signed 3 zone guys in this class. Furthermore all 5 of them are identical C overall, C+ potential players so I'm really not sure why they had to go after so many of themC
DEBA very deep room, but again no top-shelf talent as they have a pair of B+ and a quartet of B overalls. Great variety in archetypes, and 3 4-stars in this room (2 of them from last years class) means that they once again have a very firm pipeline for the future. Check in next year or the year after for a likely A graded room2Last year was a phenomenal 3-man class and this year was a very small step back with a bair of B potentail 3 stars (who can still ball though). Glut of young studs in this roomC+
DTBA couple good juniors and last years blue chip signee Kendrick Honeywell progressed very nicely. Should be a team strength in the long run and in general I like the composition2Dang, the walkon bug strikes as Kentucky allowed a pair of 1-stars into this room. Don't let the numbers fool you, next year they'll need a pair of signees to make up for thisD
FBA-Last 2 classes each had a 4 star FB. That is really good for this position0Didn't sign any-
FSB+They've got a RS JR 4 star A overall A- potential who headlines this room. Jordan Marsh should be an all-conference contender and he'll be returning next season too. Last cycle they also signed a 4-star future replacement for him in Mike Dixon so this room is very very solid1Added a walk on run stopper. He doesn't stand a chanceC-
ILBBOnly 2 players in the room is somewhat alarming, but both will come back next year and they're quite good (A- and B- overall) so as long as they avoid the injury bug it'll be... ok but they need to start training some replacements1Added a bad walk-on. This is not the replacement they need and next cycle will need to hit it bigD
KCThey have a B+ senior right now and that's it. He's good but no depth or future whatsoever at this position0No signees. Very, very poor planning, next year they'll have either a true freshman or a punter taking kicks which is very dangerousF
OGB+An A- senior on one side and a trio of B possibilities for he other. They do only have 2 non-seniors right now and didn't sign any last year so adding another pair would probably be good for the long term health1They will be in a big spot of trouble here as they only add a walk on to the room. Next year they'll only have 2 guys at all who are capable of playing and will desperately need depthD-
OLBBAn A overall run stoper on one end is one of the best defensive players on this team and will be scary to play against. On the other side they have a B+ RS SO, and another 4-star SO waiting in the wings. The rest of their depth is pretty solid too2Adding in a pair of 3-stars with good development prospects is a nice move that I think should pay off in the future. I particularly like Alfred Cox and think he'll eventually be an all-conference contender for themB-
OTB+Really solid overall. A- and B+ starters, a bench of 3 B overalls (including one of last years 4 star signees). I don't see many holes, especially since they're all balanced0Didn't sign any, peculiar choiceC-
PB-A junior B+ overall is really solid for a punter, they have 2 more good years out of him. They do probably need a backup though1Uh I guess technically he qualifies as a backup, although D overall, D- potential as a walk on is pretty atrociousD+
QBAMichael Oliveros basically runs this team, as he goes so goes everyone else. While he couldn't piece it all together last season, he is incredibly athletic and grew into an A overall player with formidable attributes. In addition, he has a B+ scrambling backup in case something happens to him. Every other player in the room is a major project though, but Oliveros has 3 more years to start so I doubt it matters (unless he declares early)3This is... an odd position to add 3 players to given how full it already is. Especially since I don't see any of these guys as can't miss prospects and should be career backups. Kentucky now has 9 QBs rostered as they may be trying to rival Michigan eventuallyC-
RBAKelvin Dupree similarly looks to put it together this year after being on the cusp of greatness last season. I think he shows out this year before going pro. They have some solid backups / future starters as well, but last years signee Trey Garcia I think will be the guy who takes over next year and the year after. Bright future in this room2Added a walk-on (who cares) as well as Brian Doughty, one of the top-3 RBs in the nation this cycle. He was a big, big early win on the trail for Ezaco and probably helped cement Kentucky as a viable landing place for other talents. He is by far the crown jewel of this class, nice getA-
SSC-They have 2 juniors and 2 sophomores and only one of them is acceptable for an SEC role. John Austin is the rare 2-star starter, although how good he is will heavily depend on the scheme Kentucky runs as he doesn't seem that flexible of a player. Last years signees are for the future and not ready to contribute this season0Didn't sign any-
TEC+Ian Beverley is the A+ potential RS JR leader in this room and a great safety valve for Oliveros. Behind him is Dallas Harrison who is... fine I guess for this team, and then last year's signee Zach Slade who projects as a starter 2 years from now2Adding in 2 players is great and definitely pulls this room up a bit. George Wolfe especially comes in with A overall potential (I wanted this kid), and will be a future starter, bet on itC+
WRAThe 3rd head in this 3-headed monster on offense. Logan Njoku is a full on A overall headliner for the offense, and he's not alone. A- overall RS SO, a pair of B+ overall players in addition, and then last year had a pair of 4 star B overall signees (so good!) and a 3 star A potential. This room is deep, it's talented, and all they need is Oliveros to throw some catchable balls2With all the talent in there, it was probably better to stock other positions and Kentucky was content with that, signing a development 2 star and an average 3. Not much to say about either of themC

Kentucky is... a weird team to analyze. The Oliveros-Dupree-Njoku offense looks terrifying, especially with above average line play. Defense however is a little bit hit or miss. They definitely have some holes that can be exploited. In addition, while a lot of rooms got stocked full of future starters in last cycle, the rooms that didn't were somewhat also neglected this year. DE, DT, FS, ILB, K all needed more players and just got walkons. The defensive future is actually quite tenuous without a concerted effort from Kentucky to try and get a lot of floor-raisers next cycle. In general the scholarship management is interesting. Having 9 QBs when you have a sophomore eligibile superstar is excessive, and when 1/3 of your scholarships go to CB/QB and another 1/3 go to walkons, the rest of the roster just isn't getting enough attention. Lots of pieces, but next year will be critical for the future of Kentucky football

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Status# OverallRecruiting StatusCroot Grade
CB-Trayvon Wadley is the guy manning the middle, an A overall he's invaluable in this offense. Of course he goes pro after this year and leaves the position to a trio of sophomore eligible players who are all C+ overalls right now. Look for a step back next year here1William Tibbs looks to be the next Trayvon, as he has extraordinary football IQ and B- potential as a blue chip prospect. Give him this year and maybe next to learn and then he'll anchor itB
CBB-Another good room marred by scheme mis-match. I assume they go with zone and toss the 2 man corners in here as just having bad luck. Of course that means that they have their senior A overall, senior B- overall, and then last years B overall signee. So next year they need a lot of youngsters to step up (particularly from this upcoming class) or they will be quite thin2They added a 3-star average guy and a walkon. They did have some clutch redshirts so this room will be ok for a while, but I haven't seen a clearcut all-conference starter to pair with David Smith yetC
DEC+Rayan Autry is a good player, but he shouldn't be the best in the room, especially as a senior. Marquis Liz is their other starter, a junior B overall. Behind that they have 4 C+ options who all just look... ok in terms of future prospects (although Joey Nwaba got the RS last year as a bluechip signee)4DE-U is apparently what Purdue wants to be. They signed 2 top-4 DEs in Hector Galvan and Bryce Speer (run stopper and speed rusher respectively) out of Texas, which is a monster pull and the best single room recruiting signing since Nebraska's WRs last year. They also added a pair of North Carolina 3 stars because why not. Wow this is a dominant class that will make life miserable for opposing offenses for yearsA+
DTB-A bit thin here with only 2 players rosterd, although they each have plenty of eligibilitye and are already B overalls1Only added one, but he was a top-3 DT prospect as well. Sam Chaplin has an A overall potential and should be immediate depth (he has to be as DT 3), and a future starter depending on development timeA-
FBC+A B+ overall senior is good, but there's nobody else0Didn't sign any, next year could be empty-
FSB-Triple ball hawks on the roster, the upperclassmen are pretty bad, but the RS SO Akeem Bailey looks like a gem who made a huge leap over the offseason and is their fuutre starter2They brought in some competition here including a blue chip prospect Chris Tubbs who has B potential and a zone cover pedigree (plus a 3 star Run stopper). Good foundations all aroundB
ILBB+The last 2 cycles had a 4-star signee which are paying off in becoming A- and B overalls. Great future in the middle. Last year they also redshirted 2 A potential 3 stars. Overall just tons of depth here2This year they brought in another blue chip and an average 3 star. Overall it just keeps the room motoring at a high levelC+
KD+Only one player: a C overall RS SO. He has plenty of time to improve, but it looks like this year and next should feature more missed kicks than desireable0Didn't sign any-
OGBA lot of really well developed 2 and 3 stars here means the upper crust of this room is set. They also redshirted a pair of 3 stars last year so the future looks solid too0Didn't sign any-
OLBB-They have their Good Juniors who are starting (A- and B+ overall) and then they have a bunch of high potential sophomores who need to cook a bit more2Added another pair of ok 3-stars so the depth is all there for the futureC
OTBThey have a trio of well developed 2/3 stars, but behind that is a bit barren (although redshirts have mostly papered over it)2Adding 2 3-stars without anything else of note actually does improve this room believe it or not. Interesting that they're both run blockers while the rest of the room (save the Senior) is a pass blocker. Does this portend anything?C
PD-Wow, they somehow end up with 2 punters, bot hof whom are total trash 1 stars? Someone new please come in and take over1Great, great signing. Anybody would have been an upgrade but they signed one of the few blue chip punters that come out and now are set for yearsA-
QBBNot a top of the line prospect in here, but Ankou is a RS JR B+ pocket guy who's more than capable of leading a playoff push. Overall this room is fine, not every QB needs to be the face of the program3Edward Laakso sure will be though. The field general was a top-3 QB prospect this year and is wicked smaht. To be seen when he takes over but it's clear he is this teams future. THey also signed an average 3 star scrambler (why?) and a 4 star Max Benson. I assume this was to chase the recruiting crown because they are going to need a dramatically different offense to flourish than what you build around LaaksoA
RBAMike Bates made a huge jump this year going from B+ to A overall and headline sthe room. They also have a RS SO A- overall waiting in the wings as his backup / future replacement. A power-ful 1-2 combo here2Louis Fink comes in as another 4 star in the room with a power 3-star being added as a change of pace. These guys may well be better than the QBsB
SSC+Not a lot. The senior is bad, and they only have 1 other option, a RS SO (who to be fair is a B overall). No depth here, but Caleb should be a good starter for several years0Really would've liked to see a depth piece. If Caleb gets hurt it's a big step back for this defenseC-
TEC-They have a bunch of not good 2-stars on the roster, although last year they signed a 4 star and high potential 3. While neither have broken out yet, the plan is that in 2 years time this will be a good room0Didn't sign any-
WRC+They have some good upperclassmen, but nobody who will really terrorize the defense. Last year had 2 great prospects take a redshirt where they didn't improve a whole lot either3Another huge focus: Getting weapons for Laakso. They signed 3 above average potential 4-stars, speed, route runner, and red zone threat. Tons of toys for the QBs to play with in another year or 2 when they grow a little bit. Four 4-star FR eligible WRs is a bonanza that is for sureA-

Overall this was obviously a phenomenal class with a ton of talent. They play to some clear strengths with the super-star DL, Laakso coming in to take over, the WR talent and good RB room for him. They also fixed their punting woes. On the downside, they almost over-did it at some of those strongsuit positions as they got a bid greedy stacking extra talent at the expense of some rooms that could've used it more. Still, there aren't a whole lot of holes on this roster and they do have a lot of flexibility to go after those game-changing type prospects. Tough to find many (if any) schools who wouldn't trade their class for this one and they look to be on a collision course with Penn State for many years to come.

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PosGradeCurrent Roster Status# OverallRecruiting StatusCroot Grade
CAReally good shape here. They have the A overall senior leading the line, and waiting in the wings is a B+ B potential RS SO who can step right in for 2 years of A level play. Very solid1This guy is letting down the others in the room. A 2 star D overall with B potential, he luckily isn't going to be too counted on and has a few years in case he developsC-
CBBAn extremely deep group, but without many headliners. They have an A- at the top, and then 5 B overalls (although 2 of them are zone guys who will be out of position. I think they run their seniors at the top, forget the 20 year olds, and have the RS FR pair as backups. These guys btw were part of a great class of two 4* B overall recruits and will be mega talented sooner than later2Added a who cares, out of position 2 star, and then another 4 star to match last years haul. Solid continuationC+
DEB+Another deep as hell group, a B+ and then 5 B overalls up and down the line. Last year had the highlight with a pair of 4 stars who took a redshirt and progressed to B overall2A pair of solid 3 star speed rushers, not going to be as hyped as last years signees but good depthC+
DTB+Another fantastic squad. An A- overall RS SO, a pair of B overall seniors, and they had another 4 star nose tackle last year who took a redshirt and moved up to B overall1Added another 4 star in this room making it 3 years in a row. DT is extremely deep now and will be formidable for years to comeB-
FBA-Last year they signed a 4 star blocking FB and redshirted him. That means 4 years of at least B overall play from the guy. Great signing1They added another 4 star blocker this year with A- potential. Interesting pursuit since now they both have freshman eligibility and I'm not sure you can play two FBs. Still undeniably a great pickupA
FSB+The top here is just alright with a B+ senior and then a big dip for the junior. Last year they signed two guys: a good 3 star and a B overall 4 star. the 4 star (John Junis) took the RS and will have 4 years of at least B overall play to lock this position down1Random walk on, but it would've been really hard to sign anybody here who would get playing time anywaysC-
ILBCThey have an A- senior which is really good! Unfortunately behind him are a bunch of C and C+ players who don't particularly look like soon-to-be stars. This room could use a talent injection for sure2They got one, another 4 star enters the room as a field general from michigan. They also signed an average 3 star Field general with himB-
KCThe best player is last years 3 star signee who made it to C+ overall this year. Not great but he is their best option1Added a 2 star D overall with mid potential? Not impressedC-
OGC+An ok room here. They have a B+ senior on one end, and the next best player is a B overall RS FR 4 star who they signed last year. Pretty much everyone in between is mid and just depth.3Great pickups here to elevate an otherwise ordinary room. A 2 star (I don't care about him) and then a pair of 4 star B overalls including David Lowery who almost could have been a B+ overall. Interestingly all 3 are from Louisiana (pipeline anyone) and are run blockers just like the last 2 classesA
OLBC+Pretty much the same as the OG room. They have a B+ overall senior and then a bunch of borderline C/B overalls. Last year they added a 4 star who was redshirted but didn't make the jump to B overall. The future looks solid but they have a gap of a year or 2 where it won't be great1Only one addition, but they didn't need depth they needed talent and they got it. David Weller is a B- potential pass rusher from Texas who could be the future starter hereB-
OTA-A much better room here, they have an A overall senior and a bunch of Bs including a B+ RS SO and a B overall RS FR from last years class. this room is very well set in both talent and depth2Great pair as they get a B overall OT and a 3 star too. Interesting is that Herman Cheeks is *also* from Louisiana meaning like 1/3 of their offensive line players are from that state, interesting quirk. They are also all run blockers for their last 3 classes so this line is extremely focused on one thing onlyB+
PA-They are in good shape, they got a blue chip last year who they redshirted and now have 4 years of at least B overall play1Added a mid 3, I guess just for depthC
QBB-No true stand out starters, this could be a spring - fall camp battle to see who the starter is. They have a senior B overall pocket player who would ordinarily be in line to start, but they may want a scrambler considering their line composition. On that front they have a B overall RS SO scrambler, and last year signed a 4* Rick Martes scrambler who is now a RS FR B overall this year. Lots of options1And they added yet another good option with balanced QB Chun He. A 4 star balanced player, He is a great player, although I am a little bit surprised they didn't get a scrambler with the all run blocking line they've assembledB
RBB+They have a good room here. Mickey Brogdon is an A- overall player with 2 yearss left and there are a few B overall backups including a RS SO and RS FR who will turn into superstars in the long run. Great prospects to lean on for years2Added another pair of solid 3 stars, they aren't exactly stars but they are solid playersC
SSC+A B+ overall Senior is the starter this year, and then they have a B overall, A- RS SO backup. Mismatched coverage among safeties is a bit iffy, but it's not a glaring hole0Didn't sign any-
TEC-Not a lot of good options, and few blockers who you'd expect them to go after. They have a B overall RS SO who is pretty solid and then a lot of nothing around him. Last years 2 signees are still just C overalls1Added a 1 star walkon, basically doesn't matterD+
WRB+WR is actually a strong room for a run focused team with a couple really good underclassmen. The last two classes have 3 players with 3+ years of eligibility and all should hit A overall at some point3Added a speedy 4-star, and then an average 3 and ok 2. These aren't a phenomenal haul, but they're plenty good enough to play complementary football with Chun HeC+

The first half of this roster had me thinking this was a playoff team by next year. Last years class looks absolutely phenomenal. In comparison this year wasn't quiteee as good, but they did a really good job of getting impact signees at the rooms that most needed them. I think this has an argument for being a top-5 class in the nation, and this team will be REALLY good for years

Class Grade: B

Thanks for doing these! I agree with pretty much everything that you said about my roster. Just some notes on some of your comments:

QB room - I grabbed Benson because no one put points on him for a bit and I saw he was quick in the E11. I'll try him at RB but if he doesn't get up to an A speed or so, will never play for me.

FB room - Avoiding them.

SS room - My one big miss. I had a few points on a 3-star A potential but someone 20'd him and took him in like Week 13. The plan is to see if Tubbs can fill in here. He'll probably be a big depth piece for me.

OG/OT - Yeah, I need some guys here next year. Crooted run guys this year because I'll be a running team next year and probably the year after.

Some obvious areas of need but at least I don't have to fight over some of the most fought-over positions next year.

Thanks again @tsweezy
