KoUntry Wide Kansas: A Brief Dissection of the 2022 Scholarship Players

Last year, the Kansas Jayhawks made a major push into the upper midwest and Great Lakes in signing weather-hardened, culture fits to establish their foundation. This year, Kansas again heavily targeted the hard-working flyover states, but also made a significant push into the deep southeast of the US.

While the Jayhawks didn't show much interest in home-state recruits like 4* OT Philip Hering (Kansas State) or 3* RB James Falkner (Florida State) outside of the early periods of recruting, they made another significant impact into Big Ten territory, landing recruits from Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and New Jersey. They also made a major investment into historically-ACC areas, with big gets in the Carolinas, Florida, Washington D.C., and Georgia. With much talk and murkiness about conference expansion, it appears coach @Bundy has the team prepared to go head-to-head with just about anybody on the gridiron and recruiting trail alike. Kansas still managed to snag a pair of commits from Texas to keep the Big 12 diehards somewhat satisfied, and then secured a late commitment from a Las Vegas-born recruit who followed the Mountain West growing up, and watched the Colorado State bowl game.

We're missing a few recruits though in this brief summary. For that, we turn to something that spawned from the National Championship watch party.

That's right. T-Pain might be able to take you to a mansion in Wiscansin, but coach @Bundy is bringing the local dairy-raised recruits down to Lawrence in a takeover marketing pitch, making them WisKansan.

Tim Jarvis is actually an OT but I whipped these up in MS Paint and am too lazy to go back and change it.

Over the last two recruiting cycles alone, the head ball coach has brought in 10 different scholarship players to Kansas from Wisconsin. This year, they landed a hotly-contested battle for Craig Lonergan, a 4* punter out of Racine Horlick who had been strongly leaning towards Minnesota's offer until he noticed what true freshman kicker Jake Ramirez was doing in Lawrence. Lonergan is expected to see playing time immediately despite 2021 class punter Victor Weigel's passable showing as a true freshman himself. Free safety Blake Godfrey, a 3* from St. Croix Central, will immediately enter competition for a depth role that will need to sort itself out. Like many 3* players, he will probably be a 5-year player. And quarterbacks Robert Lemberger and William Abshire are a pair of dual-threats from the Fox Valley; Lemberger played at the dynasty school of Wisconsin's Division 6, leading the Legers to a pair of state title games while somehow not being hated by everyone in the county for being a pompous douchebag who went to Spri and interestingly was noticed for being a rival school to that of coach @Bundy s alma mater. Abshire was hot on the KU radar for over a year as well, with the Kansas staff taking note of him during a recruiting visit to see 2021 3* FB Alex Takahashi and his Neenah Rockets take on Abshire's undefeated Kimberly squad.
