Recruiting Position Rankings - WR

Recommended Posts

With the end of the second recruiting cycle at hand, I wanted to take some time and see which teams have been loading up on talent at each position. Where are the future stars going to come from, and where have people been focusing their efforts? This will be an X-part series depending on how many positions I want to do. Fourth Spot: WR

A quick note on methodology here. I have a very un-official system of scoring each recruit according to their projected junior year overall. So it takes stars, overall, and potential into account. I ranked all croots at each position and considered the top X players at each position that each school signed to get a holistic picture of which room is the best. So signing only 1 QB in 2 years can still be a top room if he's the #1 QB whereas if you only sign 1 WR in 2 years even if he's a 5 star A overall that won't be the best overall grouping.

Lastly, the "#X overall" rankings are position-specific, so #5 overall means the 5th best (probably tied) RB recruit in the Combined 2021 and 2022 classes

Again, a lot of these are just fun rankings, many other teams are in the convo and it depends a lot on whether you value having a great #1 option or more depth

Without further ado: the wide receivers

5th place

:texasa&m:

Texas A&M

Kicking us off, Texas A&M signed four 4-stars over the last 2 cycles. Two of them walk in as B overalls already, and they have an additional B+ potential 3 star coming in as well. All of the players are either possession or red zone threats, so it seems like the coaches have a type in mind, but with a scrambler at QB maybe they just don't want him throwing downfield too much.

Anthony Davison - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Gorkys Ryan - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Ramon Perez - 4 star, C overall, B- potential, Possession, 47th overall
James Martin - 4 star, C overall, C potential, Red Zone Threat, 74th overall
Barrett Allen - 3 star, C overall, B+ potential, Red Zone Threat, 105th overall

4th place

:tennessee:

Tennessee

Tennessee has fewer WR signees than most, but makes up for it in quality. Their top-3 guys are all B overall 4-stars which will make for a 3-headed monster down the line as any of them are capable of getting open on any play. While they lack an over the top threat like Ray Ray was, James Jones is a speed guy who they're hoping was just underrated in high school.

George Simpson - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Alex Smith-Schuster - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Quincy Stanton - 4 star, B overall, C potential, Route Runner, 34th overall
James Jones - 3 star, C overall, C- potential, Speed, 242nd overall

3rd place

:pennstate:

Penn State

Part of Penn State's 5-star smorgasbord this cycle was Brien Walker, a local speed demon who had always wanted to play hometown hero. They look to pair him with another B overall, top-20 talent Pedro Farrow. They have an additional four 3-stars to pad the roster, but they won't be feature pieces. Frankly this class could probably be #2 overall and I wouldn't bat an eye at that claim

Brien Walker - 5 star, B overall, C potential, Speed, 4th overall
Pedro Farrow - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Tyler Butler - 3 star, C overall, B potential, Speed, 124th overall
Olivier Curry - 3 star, C overall, C+ potential, Possession, 176th overall
Ulrick Bojorquez - 3 star, C overall, C+ potential, Red Zone Threat, 176th overall
Mark Sandoval - 3 star, C overall, C potential, Possession, 230th overall

2nd place

:baylor:

Baylor

Tyler Prochnow is probably going to be the most electric player in college football after he seasons for a few years. An incredible speedster he can outrun anybody you put on him. In addition, Baylor added Donald Masterson as a great red zone threat for when the field is compressed. Throw in a pair of B+ potential 3 stars who will be great complements after a few years of growth and this is a squad that can lead a vertical attack to keep pace in the Big 12.

Tyler Prochnow - 5 star, B overall, B+ potential, Speed, 2nd overall
Donald Masterson - 4 star, C overall, C+ potential, Red Zone Threat, 55th overall
Yolmer Harman - 3 star, C overall, B+ potential, Speed, 105th overall
Darin Siegrist - 3 star, C overall, B+ potential, Speed, 105th overall

1st place

:nebraska:

Nebraska

Is this surprising? Nebraska didn't have to do anything this year to earn this spot thanks to an all-time haul last cycle. TWO 5-star receivers in the top-10 prospects of the last 2 years. Then they tack on another B overall player? Mind boggling talent in that class. They added a 3 star almost as an afterthought, but these guys will be dudes down the line and almost impossible to stop.

Patrick Hernandez - 5 star, B overall, C potential, Possession, 4th overall
Ro'Derrick Billings - 5 star, B overall, D+ potential, Route Runner, 8th overall
Justin Saint Fleur - 4 star, B overall, C+ potential, Possession, 20th overall
Miguel Barton - 3 star, C overall, C+ potential, Red Zone threat, 176th overall
