Rutgers Scarlet Knights Season Preview

Recommended Posts

Piscataway, NJ – The Rutgers Scarlet Knights look to start off their season strong this year in order to show the country that they are for real. This is a group that could surprise and they are very upperclassmen-heavy this season. I take a look at the Scarlet Knights season below.

Projected Starters

G - Stephen Borg - SO - B overall

G - David Groce - SR - B overall

F - Myron Cerroni - JR - B overall

C - Marion Brown - SR - A overall

C - Donald Bridges - JR - B overall

Key Bench Contributors

C - Brett Nelsen - JR - B overall

C - Daniel West - SO - B overall

G - John Churra - SR - B overall

Rutgers has a very solid first eight players and should be able to go deep in their rotation this season. They are one of the very best rebounding teams in the conference and will be able to limit possessions. They are also going to be very good defensively, which will limit opportunities that other teams get to run up and down the floor. Scoring could be a bit of an issue for them but they have such a myriad of options I think it will all work out for them this year.

Non-Conference Schedule

Week 1A: @ Hawaii

Week 1B: @ Nevada

Week 2A: Seton Hall (Gavitt Tip-Off Games)

Week 2B: @ UConn

Week 3A: North Carolina (ACC-B1G Challenge)

Week 3B: Toledo

Week 4A: Miami (OH)

Week 4B: Seattle

Rutgers put together a very solid non-conference schedule. The only game that I feel confident in labeling as a win is their last game against Seattle. Other than that, every game should be very competitive and they literally could go 1-7 or 8-0. They’ll tinker with some lineups and use the non-conference portion to get ready for conference play. Non-conference projection: Low: 3-5, High 5-3.

Overall Thoughts

This Rutgers team is going to be better than people expect. I really like them on the defensive side of the basketball and I think that they are going to surprise on the offensive end of the floor. Look for them to lose some close games early on as they are finding their footing. This could be one of the best defensive teams in the country and I think they’ll ride their defense to some wins. Prediction: 18-10 (13-7 B1G)
