Michigan State Spartans Season Preview

Recommended Posts

Lansing, MI – Michigan State has had a lot of success on the football field and is looking to get that success to translate onto the basketball court. With about as much talent on the court as the school has on the field, that success will likely translate – at least this year. Below, I take a look at the Michigan State Spartans team for this upcoming season.

Projected Starters

G - George Hwang - SR - A overall

G - Colin Newport - SR - B overall

F - Roberto Pastella - JR - A overall

F - Matthew Haas - SR - A overall

C - Scott Creduer - JR - A overall

Key Bench Contributors

G - Mario Fernandez - SR - B overall

F - Richard Mcgaugh - JR - B overall

C - Paul Coleman - FR - C overall

The Michigan State starting five are among the best in the NCAA as they have four players in the lineup who are A overalls. This is not a team that is going to key in on one way to beat you as they are each talented in different areas. Haas is one of the best players in the entire country. Michigan State will take care of the basketball as they’ll be one of the least turnover-prone teams in the country. The depth of the team does scare me a bit, however, as they are not very deep.

Non-Conference Schedule

Week 1A: Gonzaga (Neutral)

Week 1B: Kentucky (Neutral)

Week 2A: @ Providence (Gavitt Tip-Off Games)

Week 2B: Appalachian State (Neutral)

Week 3A: Wake Forest (ACC-B1G Challenge)

Week 3B: @ Davidson

Week 4A: @ George Washington

Week 4B: @ LSU

Michigan State doesn’t really challenge itself except for a neutral site game against Appalachian State, which is one of the best teams in the country. The Spartans have a favorable non-conference slate and I think that they have a good chance of running through their schedule unscathed. Their depth might be a question mark so I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped a head-scratcher somewhere along the way. Non-conference projection: Low 6-2, High 8-0.

Overall Thoughts

Michigan State looks like easily one of the top teams in the conference. With four key seniors departing after this season, Michigan State will need to make a run if they want to win a National Championship this season. They have an opportunity to make things interesting in the Big Ten and should be fighting for a title at the end of the season. I really like the makeup of this squad. Prediction: 22-6 (15-5 B1G)
