Maryland Terrapins Season Preview

Recommended Posts

College Park, MD – The Maryland Terrapins are looking to forget a football season and turn their attention to the hardwood this winter. Led by coach @RobSun08, this is a team that looks to be very solid on paper but might run into some issues throughout the season. I take a look at the Terrapins season quickly below.

Projected Starters

G - Hyun Xu - SR - A overall

G - James Webb - JR - B overall

F - David Gosselin - SR - B overall

F - Reginald Miles - SO - B overall

C - Jeffery Valbrun - SR - B overall

Key Bench Contributors

F - Scott Wise - SO - B overall

C - David Weiss - FR - C overall

G - Wayne Evans - JR - C overall

G - Keith Agarwal - FR - C overall

G - Joel Harvell - JR - C overall

Maryland has one of the best guards in the entire conference but after Xu there is not much to be excited about. They have some good depth as they will be starting all B overalls but they just don’t gel extremely well together. The thing with this group that I am most concerned about is their defense as they don’t have anyone that will be able to lock down the other team. This is a team that will score a lot but also allow a lot of points.

Non-Conference Schedule

Week 1A: @ Georgetown

Week 1B: @ Utah State

Week 2A: @ DePaul (Gavitt Tip-Off Games)

Week 2B: Army

Week 3A: @ Virginia Tech (ACC-B1G Challenge)

Week 3B: UMBC

Week 4A: St. John’s

Week 4B: @ Butler

The Terrapins have a very good non-conference schedule as they play both of their “challenge” games on the road and also take on St. John’s and Utah State, which are two of the best teams this season. Maryland wanted to give themselves a challenge in the non-conference slate and they are doing just that this year. Prediction: Low 2-6, High 5-3

Overall Thoughts

Maryland has a tough start to the season and has a few very good defensive teams that they will have to face this year. I think that Maryland will struggle this season simply because their guards think that defense is optional. Xu and Webb are their only B overall guards and both are a D on defense. Look for Maryland to allow a ton of points this season and win some games by outscoring their opponents. Prediction: 11-17 (8-12 B1G)
