Kansas Jayhawks 2022 Season Primer

Recommended Posts

For Kansas basketball, the hype has never been more real.

When we last saw the Jayhawks, a preseason contract dispute removed the coach they had tabbed as their head man, derailing any major hopes they'd had. A lost season nationwide followed, but out of the darkness rose the Jayhawks - this time coming to terms with KU football coach @Bundy to take on a major role in the Kansas athletics department, where he'll serve as head man for both basketball and football as the Deputy Athletic Director.

Bundy's first major moves in the basketball world were scheduling a competitive and energetic schedule, while keeping locality as a priority. "We want our fans to be able to travel with us - engage in the rivalries, but still make an affordable weekend out of it for the family." Kansas will of course play the usual suspects in the Big 12, but they open up with a non-conference slate with games in Indiana, Idaho apparently which is just being found out today and no Im not salty the previously scheduled game in that time slot got changed without being told ? , and a destination game against Miami and coach @cultur3 which has been dubbed "The Greg Classic" , with proceeds being split between local charities to get PBRs into the hands of local legends. Kansas also faces Duke in a neutral site clash between two literal blue bloods. But perhaps more exciting than this string of away matchups, is the lineup of home OOC games. Wichita State, South Dakota State, and Wisconsin are all big time games on the court, and Utah State coming to town will be no slouch. Kansas will wrap up OOC with conference clashes, traveling to Villanova as the Big 12 takes on the Big East, and traveling to Auburn in a fight against the SEC.

At Kansas practice, there's been a notable lack of a true big seeing major minutes, with the only center on the roster, seven footer, redshirt freshman Simon Woods, being an offensive liability. The Jayhawks have been focusing heavily on rotating their forwards to make up for this.

An expected Kansas opening tip lineup will likely include freshmen Joseph Wingard and Kevin Lukacs, redshirt junior Jimmie Coleman, who are all guards. "We don't have a lot of height on this team," says Coleman. "So we want to really attack the wing." With Wingard and Lukacs coming into the lineup as true freshmen, there's a lot of hope that they'll be the future core of the team for years to come. Joining the backcourt trio will be senior forward Ramon Duncan and junior forward Donald Perez. We've seen a lot of Louis Carter and Jack Edwards at the 6 + 7 in early practice, but expect minutes to get spread around during noncon.
