Purdue Football - Season in Review: Offense

Recommended Posts

A year after riding Chubb, Jackson, and Mckinney to an appearance in the College Football Playoff, the Purdue Boilermakers debuted new faces at almost every single skill position on the field. It was a season of growth as some inexperienced players made mistakes but also made some big plays. There were bright spots such as rushing for over 2,000 yards and having a top-five offensive line in college football. There were also some bland spots as the Purdue quarterbacks combined for just six touchdowns through the air and the receivers didn't really show up. Below, we will dive a bit into the offense prior to looking at the offensive depth chart tomorrow.

A Look at the Numbers

Total Points - 225 points - 9th in B1G - 78th overall

Points/Game - 18.75 PPG - 8th in B1G - 66th overall

Total Offense - 4,552 total yards - 9th in B1G - 88th overall

Offense/Game - 363.6 YPG - 9th in B1G - 79th overall

Passing Yards - 1,209 yards - 13th in B1G - 124th overall

Passing/Game - 100.75 YPG - 13th in B1G - 124th overall

Passing Touchdowns - 6 TD's - 12th in B1G - 120th overall

Rushing Yards - 3,143 yards - 1st in B1G - 6th overall

Rushing/Game - 261.9 YPG - 1st in B1G - 3rd overall

Rushing Touchdowns - 20 TD's - 5th in B1G - 19th overall

Times Sacked - 8 sacks - 3rd in B1G - 20th overall

Interceptions Thrown - 10 interceptions - 6th in B1G - 36th overall

A quick snyopsis of the numbers above show that Purdue was one of the best rushing teams in the nation but were well below average passing the football. Purdue Was about middle of the road in scoring points per game this season but the numbers tell you that they could not capitalize on their drives once the got to the redzone as they had just 20 rushing touchdowns. The lack of explosive plays and number of turnovers that the team had on the offensive side of the football really handicapped them this season.
