BLOOMINGTON - The sports world exploded on Sunday with news that high school phenom Timothy Doak had committed to Indiana, becoming the football team's first ever 5-star recruit. Doak had been linked by many experts to Western Michigan, who are currently undefeated and sitting at #1 in the coaches poll. But when the team captain from Florida’s Windermere Prep made the announcement, Indiana was the surprising choice.

At 6’5” and 295 pounds, Doak has been a dominant force on the offensive line. He’s considered the best center in this year’s recruiting class, and one of the top linemen along with guard John Raymond and tackles John Nunez and Shawn Johnson. “Timothy is a premiere talent,” coach @Piercewise1 said to reporters after the news broke. “We’re excited to hear about his decision to come play for us at Indiana, and I look forward to helping him grow into the best football player and best person he can be. This is a great day for Hoosier Nation.”

Recruiting was a major focus of the coaching search for the Indiana Athletic Department last year; the previous recruiting class was among the nation’s worst, featuring mostly 1- and 2- star prospects. This commitment from a major recruit, coming so early in the process, looks like an early validation of their selection. Indiana’s football program has had its share of notable names: safeties Adam Grier (class of ’17) and Joseph Frank (class of ’12) are both starting in the NFL, and edge rusher Ty Bogdanovic seems like a surefire draft selection for 2024. But none were ranked as highly coming out of high school as Doak.

Indiana’s current starting center is Cesar Barnes, a senior and two-year starter. While it’s obviously too early to speculate, it’s entirely possible that Doak could be competing for a starting job before he attends his first class on campus.
