Morgantown, WV

#6 Kansas State moves to 4-0 after a late rally against the West Virginia, winning 31-27. A three touchdown performance from Wildcat's QB Brandon Smith highlighted the night, but it was the 70 yard bomb to WR Danny Cichy with 17 seconds remaining in the game that saved KState's perfect record.

The game started slowly with a field goal by WVU's Mike Fox being the only score of the 1st quarter. Early in the 2nd, WVU RB Chad Dolis split through the Wildcats defense for a 36 yard rushing touchdown to make it 10-0. With a minute remaining in the second quarter, the Mountaineers took their lead to 17-0 as Mario Allen took the rock to paydirt from 21 yards out. However, Brandon Smith would not go quietly into halftime, as he connected with Danny Cichy for a 64 yard touchdown to have the score 17-7 before the third quarter.

Early in the third, Smith struck again with a 18 yard touchdown to RB Mitchell Reynolds, but the Mountaineers countered with another Fox field goal to bring the score to 20-14. A long KState drive stalled at the WVU 15 yard line and the Wildcats settled for a field goal early in the fourth quarter. WVU then countered with an 82 yard, 8 play drive burning off 4 minutes to make it a two possession game, 27-17 with 8 minutes left to go. Reynolds dived in for his second touchdown of the game, giving the Mountaineers the ball back with 4 minutes left and a 3 point lead. It was all down to the WVU rushing attack to close out the game.

The Wildcat defense stood firm, forcing a punt just under the 2 minute warning as QB Shelby Musa failed to convert the 3rd and 7. Brandon Smith to Danny Cichy then sealed the game, KState remains undefeated.

The matchup was headlined by a lot of trash talk heading into the weekend game. Mountaineers star WR Avery Sterling hammering the twittersphere catching the ire of many KState players and fans alike. The dynamic receiver from Texas berated the Wildcat secondary all week long, but when it came to the game, the Wildcats got the last laugh. A crushing hit late in the third quarter from ILB Ryan Hicks forced Sterling to cough up a fumble, and sent the player to the locker room until the last drive of the 4th quarter.

Kansas State moves on to take on Oklahoma State in a ranked on ranked matchup next week. WVU has Kansas coming to Morgantown as they try to bounce back.
