B1G Review, Week 2: Top-Rated Teams Tumble

Recommended Posts

In another uneven performance, the B1G went 3-4 in interconference play and saw all three of its ranked teams lose. Only two teams are undefeated through two weeks, and the leader-less Buckeyes are 0-2. Read on to find out how we got to this point.

B1G Offensive Player of the Week:

RB Eliezer Brothers, Northwestern – 43 touches, 328 yards, 3 TDs

B1G Defensive Player of the Week:

LaDarius Lockett, Ohio State – 2 tackles, 2 INTs, TD

Buffalo 38, Rutgers 7

Rutgers didn’t look rested at all after sitting out week 1; a beleaguered defense gave up 369 to the Bulls’ 4-headed rushing attack, at a whopping 7.0 YPC. Devin Brebbia looked lost, going 4-17 with two picks.

Iowa 14, Kent State 6

Ben Rivera was in top form, going 26-33 for 361 and a TD (with 1 INT). Kameron Vaccaro had 189 yards on 33 total touches, and Malik Carpenter turned his 5 catches into a whopping 135 receiving yards. Meanwhile, the defense held Kent State to under 250 total yards and a handful of field goal attempts.

Bowling Green 15, Ohio State 14

The Buckeyes picked off Dexter Reed 3 times, with one coming in their own end zone and another being returned for a touchdown. But they still gave up 395 yards through the air, and their offense couldn’t muster enough big plays when they had the ball.

Arkansas 24, Wisconsin 7

Lance Enright amassed 57 passing yards for the Badgers, lost 22 yards on 2 sacks, and threw 2 picks. The team’s only score came on a short field after an early interception. Other than an average run defense, there weren’t a lot of good performances to reflect on.

Colorado 13, Nebraska 10

Two teams renewed an old rivalry in Boulder, but the offenses failed to show up. The quarterbacks combined for under 5 YPA and 4 interceptions, one of which turned into a pick-six for the Cornhuskers. Unfortunately, this means they still have not scored an offensive touchdown this season despite being 1-1.

Northwestern 39, Akron 31

Randy Madson and Quandre Quintanilla engaged in a QB battle for the ages (700+ yards, 6 TDs, 0 INTs), but it was the added dimension of the run game that tilted the game in the Wildcats’ favor. Eliezer Brothers racked up 277 rushing yards, including 67 on the team’s final scoring drive when he touched the ball on all but 1 play.

Purdue 23, Penn State 7

Logan Langley led the team in both rushing and receiving yards while scoring all 3 touchdowns for the Boilermakers. Penn State had no answer for the Junior fullback, and they failed to record a sack or turnover.

Indiana 23, Illinois 20

In the most surprising result of the week, Indiana shocked Illinois by scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 1:07 remaining and then hanging on for the upset. Aaron Gossett scored through the air and on the ground, and the defense bent (Ronnie Kouandjio went 16-29 for 255 yards and 2 TDs) but didn’t break.

Maryland 28, Florida 23

Stephen Brantley struggled through the air, but remained half of an effective 1-2 ground attack with RB Isaiah Lewis. Together than ran for 251 yards on 31 carries. Meanwhile, the defense picked off Morgan Neal twice and made some key stops in the 4th quarter to preserve the win.
