Week 1 Review

Week 1 Score: Oregon 23 - Michigan State 34

POTG: WR Marshal Bell - 4 receptions for 124 yards

What happened: Oregon took a 7-3 lead with 5:31 remaining in the 2nd quarter when FB Malcolm Lawson capped a 7-play, 78-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run. Michigan State answered with a TD drive of their own to retake the lead. After 3 straight incomplete passes, Oregon made the questionable decision to go for it on 4th and 10 from their own 36-yard line with 1:24 remaining in the half, and for the 4th straight play, the pass fell incomplete. Michigan State QB Wayne Murray threw a 36-yard strike for a TD on the very next play to take a 17-7 lead into the half.

Oregon continued to fight in the 2nd half, clawing back to a 13-17 deficit before surrendering 17 unanswered points as Michigan State stretched the lead to 13-34. Oregon made one last attempt, scoring a TD with 9:31 remaining in the game to pull within 14 points. The defense made a stand to get the ball back but the offense stalled inside the 30-yard line and the team settled for a FG with 2:32 left rather than going for a TD. There may have been 152 seconds left to play but there were no more points to be scored as Oregon dropped their season opener.

QB Nathan Frazier Jr. was underwhelming in his 1st career start, completing only 18 of 43 passing attempts for 252 yards and 1 INT while also taking a sack. RB Jerry Lawson couldn’t get much going on the ground only rushing for 57 yards on 14 attempts and being outpaced by his brother, FB Malcolm Lawson. The lone bright spot for the Ducks offense was Jr. WR Marshal Bell.

Week 3 Preview

Match-up: Oregon (0-1) @ Hawaii (2-0)

What to watch for (Oregon): New coach HAFFnHAFF will be making his coaching debut and has installed a Pro-style offense. How quickly will QB Nathan Frazier Jr. be able to pick up the new offense? Frazier was very underwhelming in his debut, but the Ducks don’t have much better at QB right now so the season will ride or die on Frazier’s right arm. RB Jerry Lawson could help take a lot of pressure off of Frazier if he can get back on track. Last season he rushed for 2,250 yards on 5.7 YPC with 12 100-yard games. He didn’t look anywhere near that good in the opener. If Lawson can get going behind the Ducks' patchwork offensive line it could do a lot to take the pressure off of Frazier.

What to watch for (Hawaii): Hawaii is off to a hot start to the 2022 season after an unbelievable finish in Arizona last weekend. After scoring 10 points in the first 47 minutes of the game, the Rainbow Warriors' offense exploded with 20 points in the final 12:57 of the game including an 88-yard game-winning drive executed in the final 40 seconds of the game. QB Marshall Berry was clutch down the stretch, finding WR C.J. White for a 67-yard bomb and then hitting RB Marshall Berry out of the backfield on the next play to win the game. Hawaii will look to continue big play hunting against an experienced Oregon secondary to cover up their near non-existant rushing attack in what should be an epic clash of styles.
