After a long offseason, the Irish were finally able showcase their talents against Navy in Week 1. With a rookie quarterback and head coach, the game was a challenging one. Going into the half, the Irish had not found the endzone and were trailing their rival 7-6. While the Irish defense was able to keep the game close, the offense was under performing as the only crossed the 50 yard line as a result of a short punt. The Irish needed a spark and time was running out, things would need to change in the second half. In just 7 minutes, the Midshipmen added another 10 points to their ever growing lead. After more 3 and outs to end the quarter, Coach123 was furious on the sideline, so he pulled his defense aside and demanded that they got turnovers. On the first play of the 4th quarter Jeremy Gibson intercepted a pass and returned the ball 36 yards moving it from mid field to the redzone. A few plays later Izaah Plawecki found Danny Maronde for a Touchdown. The score was now 17-13, but more crucial plays would have to be made if the Irish wanted to hoist the Rip Miller Trophy. On the second play of the next possession Matt McCants recovered a fumble giving Notre Dame the ball back with 12 minutes left. The offense lead by Plawecki, methodically moved down the field ending the drive with a James Snyder touchdown. In an instant the Irish now lead 20-17, but there was plenty of football still left in Annapolis. With Navy trying to stage a comeback, Cole Briscoe intercepted a pass once again allowing the red hot offense to take the field. Once again Izaah Plawecki answered the call leading the Irish downfield and threw a Touchdown to Josh Gaudin putting the game out of reach with just 4 minutes to go. With a comeback for the ages, the Irish defeated the Midshipmen 27-17 showing the maturity and grit of a young coach and team. What a way to start the Coach123 era in South Bend !
