After a long offseason in South Bend, the Irish look to take the field in week one against their rival, Navy. But before we get into their week one matchup lets take a look at the offseason. After finishing with a mediocre record of 7-5 the Irish looked to take their program in a different direction by hiring Coach123. While this is his first job at the college level, the Athletic Director is confident that this hire will strengthen the program for years to come. When Coach123 arrived on campus he received a very talented roster, but there were a few underlying issues. With a growing tension in the lockeroom, he needed to find who that starting quarterback was going to be. Like the old saying goes "if you have two QBs you have none", so as training camp started so did the position battle. While there were three good quarterbacks, ultimately this race was between two, Izaah Plawecki and Luke Laird. Luke was and experienced Senior, and while his veteran know-how might benefit the team, Plawecki's decision making and football IQ were far superior. While this decision left Laird dissapointed, if there are any injuries the Irish will be in good hands with him. With a talented receiving core and a solid defense, the Irish look to be contenders in the National Rankings and hope to be a playoff team come January. This being said they must still get passed a talented team in Navy. This is a road game in is the first real test if the Irish can truly be contenders. Coach123 said "I am hopeful we can win this game, but we will have to dig deep and work hard to get the win." Looking to the recruiting trail, Coach123 said "Getting that year one recruiting class if very important to set the tone for this program." Rumors have spread that the Irish might be targeting the highly coveted Dick Richards, but when asked Coach123 denied them. Other than that, Coach123 has been keeping his other targets secret as he needs to make a big splash when it comes to signees. Recruiting will definitely be a challenge as being a rookie coach will raise doubts in the media. With realignment on this rise, rumors have also spread of Notre Dame's interest in the SEC, reports have come out that there have indeed been talks between Coach123 and the SEC Commissioner. Although Notre Dame's AD has reassured the public that they will remain independent for years to come. Overall the news seems to be positive for South Bend, and fans are excited for the new season to begin and are curious to see how the rookie head coach performs.
