2023 ESPN 300: Top 10 QB Prospects

Recommended Posts

The final ESPN 300 list has been leaked and we are now taking a look at the Top 10 players by position in the 2023 recruiting class. Currently, there is very little information on the top prospects and how to differentiate them - however, we provide a little glimpse into which prospects might stand out above their peers in the future. First, we start with the Top 10 quarterbacks by positional ranking and national ranking.

#1 QB - #14 ESPN 300

Dick Richards - 5’9 224 - B overall - A- potential -

Richards hails from Anchorage, Alaska, and is somewhat of a late bloomer. He did not make varsity until his junior season, however, that doesn’t stop him from being one of the top-ranked quarterbacks in the country. He led his Johnson High School Beavers to a state title last year after knocking off some powerhouses en route. Richards currently has no preference on a school and is everything you look for in a quarterback as he is open-minded, hard-working, outgoing, and puts an emphasis on his studies.

#2 QB - #22 ESPN 300

David Scott - 6’1 222 - B overall - C- potential -

Scott had held the top spot in the ESPN 300 until Dick came along. Scott is a gunslinger and one of the best decision-makers in the country. He loves to stand in the pocket and go through his reads before delivering the ball. Scott is one of the most advanced quarterbacks to come out of Virginia in some time. He will be a very sought-after prospect after leading Dinwiddie High School to back-to-back state titles.

#3 QB - #23 ESPN 300

Edward Laakso - 6’2 217 - B overall - C- potential -

Laakso is the top quarterback from the state of Georgia this year and he inches into the ESPN 300 Top 25 after a great junior campaign. He threw for 4,800 yards and 51 touchdowns his junior year but a late interception in the state title game thwarted a chance for a three-peat. Laakso is going to come back with a vengeance this year and don’t be surprised to see him set some Georgia High School records. Laakso is going to put academics at the forefront of his college search.

#4 QB - #29 ESPN 300

Cesar Chacon - 6’1 210 - C overall - B+ potential -

Chacon is one of those quarterbacks that you look at and instantly fall in love with. He’s a speedy signal-caller with an arm to match. His ability to escape the pocket has been on full display over the past three years at Hilldale High School in Oklahoma. Chacon does not look to run with the ball a ton but is very dangerous when he does. He has a very high ceiling, and one of the best ceilings of any quarterback this year. Chacon comes from a very close and religious family in Oklahoma. Look for Chacon to try and stay close to home and pick a religious school.

#5 QB - #32 ESPN 300

Walter Garner - 6’1 238 - C overall - C+ potential -

Garner uses his legs a ton as a quarterback who loves to tuck the ball and run with it. He ran for over 2,000 yards in his junior season at Franklin High School and threw for over 2,500 yards. This dual-threat capability makes for a very dangerous quarterback who could very likely make an impact on his first day on campus. The Louisiana native has never won a state title but Franklin High School is the favorite this season. He wants to head to a school where he will be coached and can win.

#6 QB - #35 ESPN 300

Jim Kantor - 6’0 229 - C overall - C potential -

Kantor is the last quarterback who is one of the “can’t miss” guys as he is the last guy in the Top 25 overall. Kantor is very similar to Garner as he loves to use his feet. Kantor is going to need a bit of time to get used to the speed of the game at the Power 5 level as he comes from a small school in Michigan. He has led St. Johns High School to three state titles, so it is evident that he knows how to win. Kantor is very specific about where he wants to play his college ball. He wants to play at a large school and he wants to play close to home. Kantor is a very smart kid as he is in AP Classes, however, he is a bit of a fanboy.

#7 QB - #50 ESPN 300

Stephen London - 6’0 224 - C overall - C+ potential -

London has some baggage with him but he is a very talented football player. He is a dual-threat quarterback who attends Hunt High School. He was demoted to junior varsity his sophomore year because he broke some team rules. However, if a coach can reign him in they are getting one of the top players in the 2023 class. London led Hunt High School to the North Carolina state semi-finals last year while throwing for 3,162 yards and running for 1,249 yards. London wants to go to a team where he can immediately play and he always wants to be the center of attention. Sources say that London getting off of the East Coast might be beneficial for him.

#8 QB - #81 ESPN 300

Kyung Hui - 6’4 221- B overall - B+ potential -

Hui is a bit of an unknown in recruiting circles but he had a bit of a long road to enter the ESPN 300 as he makes his ranking debut. Hui is in a military family and moved to New Jersey when he was a freshman in high school. He picked up the game of football and was immediately impressed with his poise in the pocket and zip on his throws. He is one of the more polished quarterbacks in the class and also has a very high ceiling. If Hui would have been at the varsity level for more than two years, we could be talking about a Top 10 player in the country. Hui wants to attend a service academy to follow in his father’s footsteps and he wants to go to a large school. Hui wants to explore so he would like to get off the east coast and you will never have to work about grades with him.

#9 QB - #84 ESPN 300

Max Benson - 6’2 222 - C overall - D+ potential -

Benson is a Cali boy through and through. He comes from a lineage of high-impact quarterbacks at Grace Brethren High School and looks to follow in his father’s footsteps of being a starting quarterback for USC. However, Benson is a toolsy quarterback who just hasn’t quite put it all together. He makes plays for you on the field but can also lose games with his decision-making. He is a high floor but lower ceiling type of prospect, but many colleges would love to have a high floor on a starter. He would like to stay close to home but his academics are a question mark at times.

#10 QB - #95 ESPN 300

Colt McIntyre - 6’2 225 - B overall - A potential -

McIntyre is a guy who has been overlooked his whole career. After transferring high schools and sitting out last year, McIntyre is looking to win a state title this year at Orange Park High School in Florida. He’s a polished quarterback who has shown the ability to be one of the top passers in the entire country. If McIntyre would have played this past season then we could be having a conversation about him being a borderline 5-star. McIntyre has his sights set on a particular school and would love nothing more than to stay in state for his college career so that his family can watch him play. He wants to be a four-year guy in college and get a degree and he is also one of the first guys in and last guys out in the film room. McIntyre is one of the most focused players we have covered in a very long time.
