Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PositionCurrent position gradeCurrent statusRecruiting statusCrooting Grade
CC+Signed a B- potential 3 star last cycle along with a strong senior starter as wellSigned an even better 3 star prospect with an A- potentialB-
CBC-Not a lot here. The last two classes have nothing above a C or a 3 anywhereThis was a spot that could've used an instant impact player, but their signees weren't bad. A 3 star with A potential and a project 2 with B+ potential could develop very well in a few yearsC
DEC-Similar to the CBs, there are a blend of 2s and 3s who haven't broken out yet, although the sophomores have A potential so look to be better and better the next 2 yearsSigned a good 4 star here with B- potential who is going to be the best player in the room very soon, along with a 3 star B- guy who could also grow to get playing timeB
DTB-Better stocked here. Have a 4 star B overall sophomore who will be a starter, along with a freshman A potential 3 star to take over potentially next yearSigned another 3 star with B- potential. Little pressure to contribute immediately, so he should have time to develop firstC+
FBD+A pair of C C 2 stars here, mehGot an upgrade with a 3 star B potentialC+
FSC-Best player on paper is last years B potential 3 starNabbed a 2 star A+ potential. The A+ has basically uncapped potential, so this is one guy to watch down the line becoming a major playerC+
ILBC-A little thin here with only 2 underclassmen, an ok 2 star last year and a 3 star the year before who's a B alreadyBoom, best player in the class here, 5 star Mikal Cingrani was a great signee out of Chico, CA. The coverage player has C potential and B overall already, and could push for playing time even through an established group at this positionA
KCA very average group here, not much to sayDidn't sign oneC
OGCLast cycle was a bit of a dud, but the cycle before they got an A potential 3 star who's a B overall now. They signed 2 guys who could push for serviceable playing time, a 3 star and 2 star with B potentialsC
OLBC-Again, not a lot special here. 3 guys in the last 2 classes: 2, 3, 3 stars with C overalls and a couple B+ potentialsSigned 3 guys which definitely gets some depth for the room now. All 3 have identical 3 star, C+ potentialC
OTBA solid 4 star B overall signee last year to pair with their sophomore B overall A- potential 3 star, so the tackles look pretty solid for the futureAdded another depth piece with B- potential 3 starC
PDOnly 1 guy on roster. Freshman with D overall 2 starAdded a 3 star with A potential who will start immediately and looks pretty solid for the future tooB-
QBC-When the best prospect on the team is a freshman C overall 3 star, it's probably time to go hunting for more talent at the most important positionAnd they found one, Kyle Ham is one of their 2 4-star prospects, with a C- potential. He also made the cut at 11th in this years Elite 11 making him officially a "very good" Qb prospect. Also took a 3 star scrambler C+ potential to back him upB+
RBBIn a good spot here. Have a couple high potential guys including last years phenomenal signee: 4 star B overall B+ potential receiving backSigned a B- potential 3 star out of Baton Rouge for this cycleC+
SSD+Yikes, for 3 straight classes they signed a 2 star C+ potential and none of them have panned out so farGot an upgrade with 3 star B+ potential Zone coverage hereC+
TEBAnother spot with a good signee last year: 4 star B+ potential B overall has a tight grip on the position for a few yearsSigned a 3 star B- and a 2 star A- who will both get to develop and could potentially start senior year once Scott Franco graduatesC
WRCAn ok group here, nothing really stands out to meMeh. Three guys signed, all 2 stars with B+ potential. Odds are that 1 of them pans out to be a starter by senior year, but that's not really a great haul in my viewC-

it's pretty clear here that Stanford leans pretty heavily on potential. they did get a lot of guys who could turn out good, but going by the statistics, a fair number won't pan out. The good thing is that this class is at least maintaining at every position and upgrading at some, so on the whole it's a good class, if a little devoid of higher-end star power outside of Mikal.

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PositionCurrent position gradeCurrent statusRecruiting statusCrooting Grade
CB+Current sophomore Ryan Wiggins is a great starter, 4 star B overall with B+ potentialSigned a depth piece with 3 star C Duke BerriosC
CBBA pretty good mix here with sophomore 3 star B overall and a freshman B overall 4 star with B- potentialA little dip here with a C- 3 star, but it wasn't the most critical positionC-
DEC+4 3 stars in the last two classes, all between C+ - B+ potentials, some of them will be above average players in the next year or 2Didn't sign anyD
DTC+Their 5 star monster in the middle A- potential Tony Macura is entering his last season on campus, and the best guy in the pipeline to replace is a single 3 star: freshman with B potentialSigned 2 guys here, a 4 and a 3 star with C+ potentials. Definitely a good set of guys to come in to try and fill Tony's massive cleatsB-
FBC+Better position group than most, headlined by 3 star B- potential sophomoreSigned one of the few 4 star FBs, so this will be even better in the futureB
FSC+Some good 3 star high potential guys currently on the rosterGrabbed a pair of 3 star B- guys here who will be competing with each other (both ball hawks)C+
ILBC-Lots of 2 stars here, could do with an upgradeTechnically this qualifies a 3 star C+ is better than some recent classesC
KCGot a 3 star last year with B potentialDidn't sign anyC
OGB-An A- potential B overall 3 star last year and B- potential B overall the year before that means this position looks good for the futureGot a depth piece in Rob Reed, a 3 star C potentialC
OLBA-The only reason this isn't higher is depth concerns. California has only recruited 1 OLB each of the last 3 cycles. The good news is they've all been 4 star A- or A+ potentials, so this is a VERY good room for CalTook another 4 star to keep up the trend, albeit a C+ potential one. Could have snagged a 3 star as well for depth with their extra scholliesB-
OTB-Similar to OG, they had a very good sophomore and an A potential freshman, so the OL as a whole is going to be a team strength for sureAdded a C+ 3 star who will probably just be depthC
PD+Just a pair of 2 star Ds currentlyDidn't sign anyD+
QBB-Signed their future QB last cycle with 4 star B overall Tanner RodriguezAdded a pair of 3 star C potentials who are likely to just be career backupsC
RBC-Not quite so hot in this room, just a lot of 2s and 3s who haven't stood out yetNikola was a good 4 star pickup here who brings star power to the room and should eventually startB-
SSC-Meh. 3 guys on the roster, straight Cs, 2 2s and a 3Added another upgrade with an in-state run stopper 4 star with a B- potential. He might even start as a freshman with this roomB
TECAll 3 stars, in varying levels of panning outAnother average 3. Ok for the roomC
WRB-All 3 stars who have mostly progressed well, along with signing a B overall 4 star last yearAdded 4 more 3 stars bringing the total to 9 on the roster, all 4 of whom have very average potentials. One of them has to break out right?C

Having a smaller class of 20 croots hurts the rating a little bit, but it at least has some quality in it. Not signing any DEs is disappointing, but the rest of the position groups are pretty well tackled. Cal also didn't seem to put a ton of emphasis on potential, but nobody was really bad. Just a lot of average players (for now) who are good depth and replacement level, some of whom will breakthrough. I think of this as a "bedrock" class where you set the programs floor, if not reaching for a ceiling yet.

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PositionCurrent position gradeCurrent statusRecruiting statusCrooting Grade
CB+Signed a 4 star B overall just last yearDidn't sign anyC+
CBB-Have a quartet of 3 stars in the last 2 cycles, all of whom are either B overall or have B and above potential. Definitely a well developing roomSigned two more guys who fit that bill with 3 stars and B- potential. Only negative to note is that looking at the roster they go back and forth each year between Man and Zone guysC
DEB-Another room filled with good potential 3s along with a sophomore 4 star with B overallGreat haul for OSU here. Two 4 star players with B and C+ potential along with an A potential 3. They should be a force for the foreseeable future hereB+
DTBA very good B 4 star sophomore and a freshman B- 3 star hereSigned a 3 star here with A potentialC+
FBB+One of the few 4 star FB got signed last year as a B overallDidn't sign anyB
FSB+In a good position here with a 4 star B overall signee last cycleSigned an A- potential 3 star, which looks to be good as he has 3 years to develop before needing to startB
ILBB-Depends if they run a 4-3 or 3-4. They have a very good 4 star B B field general, so in a 3-4 they're very well off, whereas around him are pretty much only 2 starsSigned a pair, a 4 star speed guy and a 3 star with A+ potential who should be great in a few yearsB+
KCMeh, a 3 and 2 both with CsSigned a 3 star C+ which is pretty okC
OGC+A 4 star B overall sophomore on one side of the line, but nobody really stands out who can handle the otherAdded a 4 star and a 3 star with B+ potential who both look to be better options than anybody elseB-
OLBC+They had a few weak cycles, but last year they did get a 4 star B overall (with D+ potential). Still need someone on the other side of the fieldTwo candidates: 3 stars with B potentialC+
OTB-A good sophomore 4 star B overall surrounded by 3 stars who look to develop wellSigned one of their 2 B overall recruits here: a 4 star with C+ potential. He'll probably lock down a position soon, with a pair of 3 star A-/A potentials who will like to be starters by their Junior / senior yearsB+
PC-Good potentials I guess, but none are really good yetSigned a 3 star with B potential so they're moving up!C
QBBA bright future: sophomore class has an A+ potential Field general B overall, while last year they signed a 4 star B overall B potential to push as well. This was almost certainly a filler class, and they took 2 3-stars, including a pocket guy with A potentialC+
RBB-A 4 star B+ potential sophomore and a couple 3 star filler pieces around himSigned another 3 star, but with B+ potential he will probably contribute at some pointC+
SSC+A 3 star B potential last year, but just average around himSigned their other B overall freshman who also has B- potential, and is one of the few signees who may be able to push for some playing time this yearB+
TEC-Some mediocre 2s here, a very weak room by OSU standardsSigned a 3 star B+ guy to start raising the talent in hereC+
WRC+Lots of above average players, but nobody really special recentlyTwo more of those kinds of guys, but with good potential it's likely one will pan outC+

This was a very quiet top-10 class, but it is filled with quality. They drew overwhelmingly from in-state and still pulled in a top-10 class showing how strong the state of Ohio HS's are (or they just got every in-state guy they wanted). They also pulled a lot of higher potentials, and considering their current roster looks quite strong, all of those high potential 3s have the luxury of developing and then playing once they've grown and showed their capabilities. I'm actually not sure how they didn't have a better season this year, but the future looks quite bright. As expected of a top-10 class this looks very good, and the only minor knock is the lack of upper end star power
