Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PositionCurrent position gradeCurrent statusRecruiting statusCrooting Grade
CCTotally average 3 stars and 2 starsSigned one of the rare A+ potentials, a 3 star run block prospectB
CBC+6 3 stars on roster, but their pair of sophomores already made it to B overallsSigned a trio of 3 stars with above average potential, this wasn't a position that really stands outC+
DEC+A bunch of slightly below average 3s EXCEPT the 4 star B overall they got last cycle who should already be starting this year imoAdded 2 more 4 stars (both Cs), along with an A potential 3 to develop. Definitely a position that will get better and better each of the upcoming yearsB
DTC-mostly 2 stars, with 1 very average 3 last cycleAdded a B+ 4 star who will definitely be a long term starter hereB+
FBB+Just signed a 4 star B guy last cycleAnd signed another 4 star from in-state this year. Might be overkill, but you'd think this is prime opportunity for a RSB
FSB+Signed a good 4 star 2 cycles ago who should still have the starting position locked downAdded another 4 star C overall to keep the position primed for 2 years from nowB
ILBBSame story as FS, a very good 4 star 2 cycles ago, with some average 3s as other guys in the roomDidn't sign anyC-
KC+Average 3 star as a rising junior, but nobody last cycleDidn't sign anyC-
OGCA mix of 3s and 2s, but relatively whelmed by this position so farDidn't sign any, this is probably the position that needed it most tooD+
OLBA-A 4 star last cycle and 5 star the cycle before that. Should be a strength of this team, even if they have relatively low potentialsAdded an additional C 4 star along with an ok 3 star here. Still have this position locked down and next year's class is the important oneB-
OTB+Points for having a great 5 star senior, but he will be graduating. Behind him they have a good 4 star, and then a bunch of average 3sAustin Bolsinger was their 2nd best signee by my count, and he should hopefully step in when Rubby gets drafted in the 1st and makes some $$. Also another pair of meh 3s here for depthB
PB+Signed a 4 star last cycleDidn't sign any, didn't need toB-
QBA+A 5 star last cycle, what else is there to say? Rashaan already has his heir apparent Signed a pair of ok 3 stars as filler mostly. I'm very sure neither will touch the field at KentuckyB
RBASigned a 5 star 2 cycles ago who looks very very dangerous this yearAdded a pretty good potential C overall Power back to complement the receiving star. Also another 3 star for depthB
SSD+All 2 stars, and none have blown up so farAdded 2 potential options in B potential 3 star guys who will duke it out in camp to see who could see playing time in the future (not this year though)C+
TEC+Got the A+ Potential 3 star as a sophomore. The rest is ok 3 starsAdded another of those 3 star ok options in this classC
WRB+Signed a 4 star high potential each of the last 2 cycles so they will have some weapons availableBest class. 2 4 star B overalls with ok potentials. Also added an A- 3 star to develop. This WR room will be Dangerous with a capital D in 2-3 yearsA-

I went into this thinking they had a dominating roster and extremely good class, and after looking into it, I have modified my opinion a little bit. Kentucky is a sexy looking team with the all-stars at the offensive skill positions and the fancy linebackers, but the "boring" positions are relatively average. In the college game that's still a good recipe to make the playoffs though. Their recruiting was interesting. They added a lot of good players, but stacked in positions that might blunt that impact a little bit. In general their better positions recruiting were where they had also recently signed good players, and they didn't sign any ILB or OGs which could have used those good players moreso. Kentucky will likely stay great for the foreseeable future, but it will be led by the Superstars at QB/RB/OLB with great WRs, rather than being a dominating team across the board.

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

CB+A really good 4 star sophomore anchors the center of the lineSigned a pair of similar 3 stars who will likely duke it out to replace him in the futureC+
CBC+A 4 star sophomore, followed by a mix of 2 and 3 stars opposite himTheir best signee, and only B overall is David Smith who will walk in and battle for a spot in the rotation. Also signed an ok 3 star, but look like they'll stick to zone coverageB
DEC-A mix of 2s and 3s with average potentials. Nothing here wows me at allSigned a 4 star and a high upside 3 here to step in and upgrade the roomB-
DTCA lot of average 3s, none have that much separation in my eyesDidn't sign anyC-
FBCAverage 3 stars here, not much to note about themDidn't sign anyC
FSCGot a pretty high upside 3 last cycle who should be a starter going forwardDidn't sign anyC
ILBB-Only 3 guys in the room BUT one of them is a high potential 4 so they have good starters!Went deep, signing a trio of development 3s and a capstone 4 star from Illinois. Room now looks real goodB+
KD+A pretty bad 2 star is only underclassmanDidn't sign anyD+
OGC+Some pretty high potential 3s in the room rn which is goodAdded a pair of average 3 stars and then a development 2 to the room, but they're frankly a small step down from what they haveC-
OLBB-Got a good 4 star last cycle which is the bright spot at the positionSigned a trio of varying potential 3s, and the B+ Parker Francisco is their likely long-term best optionC
OTCA mix of average 3s and 2s, with an A potential last cycleAdded an average 1 star for some reason? Not sure why, unless he's a coaches son and getting a favor. Brandon Douglas at least has that A potential and is B1G caliberC-
PFWow, worst room I've seen so far. 3 punters all 1 starsDidn't sign any, but they really should haveF
QBCSome ok 3 stars. Dominique Ankou looks like the future starter to me but hard to tellSigned a guy in the same vein with hometown boy Austin cooperC
RBA-Signed a high upside B overall 4 star each of the last 2 cycles. Best position for sureDidn't sign anyC+
SSCOnly 2 guys in the room, and last years signee Caleb looks like the default best player hereDidn't Sign anyC
TED+They had a phenom here this season who frankly probably single-handedly dragged this team to some of their wins. This year though it's all 2 stars with nobody stepping upRemembering that, Purdue grabbed a trio: a 4, a 3, and a 2 here. My money is on Rich Wynns winning the job by next year, but I don't think anyone reaches the heights from last seasonB
WRCAnother mix of mediocre 2s and 3s with not much to mentionSame exact plan as with TE. A 4, and then a developmental 3 and 2. At least 1 will be a very good player for them imoB

This is probably the class with the most positions completely omitted that I've seen. They did have some good groupings: DE, ILB, CB, TE, WR. But most of this classes talent is clustered there. This was also a class that probably suffered a little from lack of ambition? Was maybe played too cautious, as despite putting a lot of stock into potential, there are less A guys than I expected to see given the number of 1,2, and 3 stars. Purdue imo is going to be a slight rebuild after their great season.

Below is a breakdown position-by-position of (from L-R) their current roster, what they did on the trail, and the grade I gave them in recruiting that position.

PositionCurrent position gradeCurrent statusRecruiting statusCrooting Grade
CD+A bunch of ok potential 2s doesn't made for a great room right nowAdding a 3 star and another good 2 does start to move it in a positive directionC
CBBA 4 star in each of the last 2 classes leaves WMU with a solid pair of starters going forwardAdded a pair of 3s, one of whom has A potential though. They do have time to develop thoughC
DECAgain, a lot of three stars, although some have good potentialsOne of their 2 4 star signees, Brian Barea adds some talent to this room, while Cole Stewart brings B+ potential as wellB-
DTC+A 4 star rising junior and senior makes this room strong for now, but only a pair of 2s are behind. Need more quality players hereAdded a pair of pretty solid 3s which will likely help seal that deficiencyC+
FBC1 player, a rising junior average 3 starDidn't sign oneC
FSC+A lot of A potentials here, if not a lot of starsAdded another 3 star and a higher upside 2 to compete in coming yearsC
ILBBAn A potential 4 star B overall last cycle is a future star, and they have the rising senior 4 star as well. Nothing coming next year to replace him thoughDidn't sign oneC-
KC+Pretty good freshman kicker last yearSigned a 1 star A guy, I guess taking a flier and hoping to get luckyC-
OGC+A respectable group of 3 stars hereAdded another higher upside 3 and an ok 2C
OLBCA C potential 3 and B potential 2 are the only guys in the last 2 cycles. Desperately need some talentBoom. Best player signed. Somehow convinced 5 star Seantrel Garate to come to Kalamazoo where he will almost certainly be the starter and star for the next 3-4 years. Marcell is the other 3 star signee who will likely be perpetually overshadowedA
OTB-Lots of 3s to choose from, and a 4 from 2 cycles agoAnother 1 star flier with A-, but would have liked to at least see a little depthD+
PC+A trio of 3 stars has this room as competent as most in the countryAdding another one who should fit right inC
QBBSigned 4 star C overall Ponce de Leon last cycle who looks like their future starterSigned 3 star with upside Quincy Velazquez to back him up in the futureC+
RBCA pair of average 3s and pair of average 2s. Lots of Cs hereAdded a 3 star with B- potential so that is an upgradeC+
SSD+A trio of 2 stars, none of whom having broken throughAdded another, but also got the only 3 star for the room, Al Onyema who could be their best optionC
TECGot an A potential 3 star last year! Making for hopes of good development in the futureAdded another A- potential 3 here, so in 2-3 years they could blossom into a strong pairC+
WRCTheir 4 star superstar A overall A potential is entering his last season here, and behind him is pretty mediocreSigned the other 4 star in this class who should see a lot of playing time, along with an average 3 and a development 2. the WR room may be one of the more promising ones on the rosterB-

No way around it, this class just doesn't excite me. I don't like dumping on classes, but this looks like shooting too low. WMU can attract a 5 star here, there's no reason to fill up on so many 1 and 2 star fliers. Some may pan out, but the rate is not high enough to put so many on the roster. They didn't have a ton of talent on roster already, so it isn't horrible, but I don't know that top to bottom they really got that much better as a team from this class

Fair assessments. Although, I can defend what I did at each position, I think it is fair from a 300 foot view.

Was always going to be a rebuilding year as I lost 18 starters. Needed to find some depth at certain spots - Kicker (23/30 FG), Punter (60% inside 20 yard line), DT (7 guys in the room for a 3-4), and FB (not utilized) were just a few spots I felt I didn't need anyone.

I completely agree with your assessment. It hurt to not be able to land a single ILB. I plan to shift an OT to OG, why I recruited extra depth there. It's all I can do this year, there was nothing worthwhile at OG to go for. Both will be priority next cycle, along with QB and OLB. The only place I disagree with you is CB, I feel it was a pretty solid win in recruiting to get three good potential 3 stars. I like the odds of at least one of them turning into a dangerous starter.
