Inside Tulane: Defense and Chill

Recommended Posts

After week 5 your favorite and only Tulane student reporter is back with another article on Tulane football. We have a lot to get to so let's take another deep dive inside Tulane.

Todays Topic:

Defense and Bye Weeks

Well Tulane has just finished their first bye week and we come back to dropping out of the top 25. First we asked coach Kgreene829 what were his thoughts on Tulane's standing and what he expects coming out of this bye week.

Kgreene829: "I think that we are in a good position. We had a bye week so I understand that fact that we fell in the rankings but we play Memphis this week so you know we will be looking for a win to jump back in to the top 25. We have a good team and at this point we just have to show everyone that we can bounce back from 1 bad game. Personally I love the fact that we had our bye week after our first loss, it just gives us a chance to relax and really focus on what we need to fix from that loss moving forward. I think that we learned a lot from that loss that we would not have learned if we did not have a bye week this week."

During this bye week Tulane did a lot of work but they did not start practicing until Friday. When asked about this Kgreene829 said that he felt the team needed to step back and rest for a little extra time. When practice did start they came back and they worked hard and they put a lot of focus into the offense and being able to generate points. The offense had been great all season but they were shut down last week which was a big focus in practice.

The defense did some work but not much to say they have been performing well all season. A couple of guys on defense have had big weeks individually but coach put a lot of effort into team defense and working together to shut down the other team to try and build some more chemistry.

Last week we talked about the offense but now let's look at who is leading this defense and who are the biggest players.

You can not talk about Tulane's defense without talking about Senior CB Lenny Canady with his speed he can go step for step with some of the fastest WRs in the league and plays near lockdown defense he is the leader of this defense and on some nights he will even lockdown an entire side of the field. Canady can't do everything on his own his right hand man Senior FS Ben Bouye is almost like his brother thats how close they are. Canady and Bouye command the respect of the whole team and are great leaders on this defense. This secondary rounded out with Senior SS JT Stephenson, Senior CB Monte Jackson, and breakout star Junior CB Xavier Beato makes it hard to get anything started in the passing game.

However the secondary can only do so much. This team needed someone to help with pass rush and to shut down the run. That is where Senior DT Aron Perez and Senior DE Chad Thurman come in. These two are monsters while Aron Perez is stronger and the best run stopper on the team Chad Thurman helps out with his outstanding pass rush skills. This combination is so scary the offensive linemen they go up against are seen skipping practice to go pray for their safety. Junior DE Sam Bormann stops anyone from running the ball to the left side of the field making this a dominant D-line.

We still have one more group to look into and that is linebackers. Senior ILB Cameron Font is a great run stopper and when paired up with Senior OLB Lane Worth who is so great in coverage that he can line up at cornerback and still be a dominant player and Junior OLB Aaron White who can also shut down your run game you get a defense that makes opposing teams have to carry their offense onto the bus and tie them down just to make sure they don't run away crying.

Well I did not plan on writing this much but this is just a defense that gets everyone on campus excited. Check back next week for a new edition of Inside Tulane where we will talk about our week 6 game and recruiting.
