Best performance of the week: Akron defeated Louisiana 38-17

One could question the level of competition here as Akron beat a winless Ragin' Cajun team, but simply, the Zips looked the best. Hats off to QB Josh Pennel, who was outstanding on the night, going 26-34 for 356 yards and 5 TDs. Pennel has the ability to carry Akron to a few wins this year, especially in a division as wide open as the East. RB Christian Adams is flying a bit under the radar with Pennel playing as well as he did, but Adams finished the game with 18 carries for 99 yards and 9 receptions for 110 yards and a TD. WRs J'Mon McCoys, (8 catches, 79 yards, 2 TDs) and Josh Paredes (4 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD) rounded out Pennel's favorite targets on a night that will have Zips fans wanting more this season. DT Reyes Freeman showed off his motor running sideline-to-sideline, ending the game with 10 tackles, 1.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks.

Worst performance of the week: Eastern Michigan defeated Northern Illinois 14-3

Back-to-back weeks with Northern Illinois showing a disappointing performance. The Huskies started the season strong, defeating two Big Ten opponents in Northwestern and Wisconsin, but have since laid a couple eggs with 6 total points against UTSA and Eastern Michigan. Once again, QB Darius Paredes was not able to get the ball downfield, going 11-14 for 64 yards passing. Eastern Michigan's rush defense was equally up to the task allowing just 102 yards on the ground to 5 different ball carriers. Ron Swanson's nephew, EMU QB Ryan Swanson, had an adequate game, 23-37, 211 yards and EMU RB Mike Merrifield was able to pound the ball in for 2 TDs as the Eagles nearly doubled Northern Illinois' yardage output.
