Let's take a look around the conference at how the season openers went:

:florida

Finally travelled to Orlando, promptly lost

Lost 6-10 at UCF

UCF finally convinced Florida to pay them a visit and promptly took away Florida's claim to run this state as the Gators lost 6-10. There was no fancy trickery, Florida just got beat, down 3-10 in the first half and managing a field goal in the 4th to make it look closer. A defining stat for the Gators was their rushing game: 44 attempts for 81 yards. Not gonna win a lot with that kind of showing. On the bright side, at least their defense looked good?

:georgia:

Bit off more than they could chew

Lost 24-33 at Duke

The bulldogs traveled to Durham to take on the Blue Devils and had a pretty exciting back and forth game. In the end though, they couldn't make up for the fast start by Duke, who was ahead 20-0 by the end of the first quarter. Mostly they were overpowered by Duke QB Teddy Ezechukwu who went 32-49 for 482 yards and 2 TDs. The bright side was FS Shohei Catanzaro who had 6 tackles and 2 interceptions leading to some points for Georgia. While they took the L here, they looked like a solid team and could

4th Quarter Comeback Dub

Won 21-16 at Virginia

Rashaan Lyons has garnered a lot of preseason hype, and in Week 0 he immediately started to show why. Not only did he go 29-39 for 308 and 3 TDs to 1 INT, he also led a 4th quarter comeback. Throwing 2 TD passes to RB Shaquille Sprinkle in the last 13 minutes, Rashaan saved the Wildcats from an ignominious start to the season and silenced the Charlottesville crowd.

:missouri:

Most exciting game in the slate

Won 30-17 at UNC

This was a really good game. Missouri had a great 2nd and 3rd quarter to pull ahead, but there were a ton of big plays in this game. They managed to survive UNC's QB Theo Wingenter's 18/24 for 330 yards game. Most of that was sparked by WR Jadeveon Cowgill who Missouri let go for 190 yards and a touchdown. Part of this was good turnover luck, along with a blocked punt. There were a few good sequences that I'm just going to paste below that show the theme of the game for Missouri

110:53UNC11027 UNCPassQB Theo Wingenter is sacked by DE Justin Anderson for -15 yards. .
110:40UNC22512 UNCPassQB Theo Wingenter complete to WR Ronald Boyette for 12 yards. Tackled by CB Zac McCutchen.
110:1UNC31324 UNCPassQB Theo Wingenter complete to WR Rene Paul for 4 yards. Tackled by OLB J.P. Bracy. Fumbled. Recovered by CB Zac McCutchen.
19:53MIZZ11028 UNCPassQB Aaron Leamon incomplete. Intended for WR Owa Guzman.
19:46MIZZ21028 UNCRunRB Vyncint Brooks carries for 20 yards. Tackled by CB Albert Hubbard.
19:29MIZZ188 UNCPassQB Aaron Leamon complete to RB Vyncint Brooks for 0 yards. Tackled by ILB Ariel Calderon. PENALTY: Roughing the Passer DE Jalen Jones
19:10MIZZ1-7-7 UNCRunRB Vyncint Brooks carries for -7 yards. TOUCHDOWN!

32:38UNC2919 UNCPassQB Theo Wingenter complete to WR Jadeveon Cowgill for 61 yards. Tackled by FS Brad LeRibeus.
32:19UNC11020 MIZZPassQB Theo Wingenter intercepted by CB Jerami Hendricks returned for 0 yards from the LOS. intended for WR Jadeveon Cowgill.

:southcarolina:

Made a man named Bobo look like a star

Lost 24-37 vs Boston College

South Carolina didn't play horribly. They just could not stop BC QB Bobo who went 16/17 for 274 yards and 3 TDs, all to WR Edinson Slegers who had receptions of 32 yards (TD), 42 yards (TD), 72 yards (TD), and 64 yards. If they could stop other teams from having such a lucrative connection they could see some success in the future.

:tennessee:

Orange Crush

Won 31-3 vs. Syracuse

Easy win here in the battle of oranges. Tennessee led the whole way thanks to 203 yards from RB Aldrick Ynoa and 292 from QB Cedric Marsh. It wasn't a super interesting game as Tennessee cruised and kept their playbook a little under wraps. It could have gotten competitive though, as Syracuse picked off Cedric twice in his own territory but ultimately could not capitalize on those miscues.

:vanderbilt:

Vanderbilt is hot garbage

Lost 0-45 at Rice

Vanderbilt is bad and they should feel bad. Giving up 45 points and getting blanked against Rice, one of the least talented teams in the country has got to hurt. QB Gehrig Crecelius went 4-18 for 11(!!) yards while they let Rice WR Franklin Hezonja go for 171 yards and 3 TDs. To really drive that point home, below are the receptions from this game. Was their best receiver their RB who had one catch for 4 yards and a fumble? The two players who got a 0 yard pass? No, they had Drew Bryan catch a 7 yarder! What a bright spot.

Even their special teams was special, missing a field goal.

TL;DR - Vanderbilt sucks

:alabama:

Won, but didn't cover

Won 10-23 at Utah

It's hard to fault a 23-10 away win against a well-coached Utes team, but I think we all expected more fireworks from the consensus preseason number 1 and most talented roster. Defensively they held up great, albeit with no standout performances. On offense though it was a little ho-hum with RB Jhan Peters going for 175 and a TD on 36 carries as the highlight.

:auburn:

Heavyweight knocked out

Lost vs. Oklahoma 23-35

One of the more anticipated games, Auburn was unable to hang on against a probable top-5 team in Oklahoma even with Jordan-Hare magic. QB Andrew Leiter had the worse of it in dueling David Paul as can be seen with their statlines below

AUBAndrew Leiter15322357.3412106.382

Some of the lowlights included allowing 60 yard pick six and 66 yard rushing TD in the first quarter. After this though they settled down and could have won if those mistakes hadn't happened. They had their own 60+ yard touchdown in the 3rd followed by a punt block to keep it close but missed a field goal and couldn't claw back.

:arkansas:

Ho-hum Victory Week 0

Won 22-14 vs. East Carolina

Not much to say about this game after looking through all the others. It was pretty straightforward, not many fireworks. Arkansas missed an XP which is disappointing but they played good stout defense, only allowing 21 yards on the ground and 157 in the air. On their end they were also held under 300 yards so offense is something they will need to work on moving forward.

:lsu:

Death in the Valley

Lost 27-34 vs. Arizona

A slightly embarrassing loss at home to the Wildcats, as they let opposing RB Derron Humphrey run wild for 239 yards and couldn't convert the 4 Arizona turnovers and 2 sacks into points. The offense was boom or bust, as QB Brandon Palumbo only had 40% completion percentage but threw for 285 yards on 12 completions as they scored 27. FS Marchie Pedroia looked great with 2 tackles and 2 INTs. In fact, since they only lost by a TD they may want to petition the refs for some... questionable plays as shown below where Marchie had to record 2 INTs in one series? immediately followed up with a missed safety? A punt that had to be replayed due to penalty and then immediately giving up a TD. That series made LSU fans boil more than their crawfish as they demand answers.

113:9ZONA11014 LSURunRB Zach Anthony carries for 4 yards. Ran out of bounds.

Not sure what happened there

Tried their best

Lost 14-16 vs. Illinois

Sadly sometimes your best isn't good enough, as Illinois came to Oxford and narrowly edged out the landsharks. QB Stephon Noesi did not look great going 9-17 for 73 yards and 2 INTs, although he did have a nice 48 yard TD scramble in the 4th to take the lead. Sadly he then threw an INT with 5 minutes left that sealed the loss as Illinois kicked the game winning FG a few minutes later. This season may come down to trying to manage his mistakes and getting him to grow as a player. Defensively, Elih Rodriguez had a great game with 9 tackles, 1.5 TFL, and 1.5 sacks.

:missisippistate:

An ugly win is still a win

Won 9-7 vs. Southern Miss

Thankfully Miss. State did not give state bragging rights to Southern Miss, but that was an ugly game featuring some back and forth turnover battles as shown below. Not a lot else to say about this game. Not many good kinds of exciting plays to cheer for in Starkville this weekend.

18:59USM11020 USMPassQB Zack Freeman complete to WR Vadal Lawrence for 5 yards. Tackled by CB Noah Golden. Fumbled. Recovered by ILB Dennis Ilyasova.
18:46MSST11025 USMPassQB Alec Bullard complete to TE Ildemaro Boykins for 6 yards. Tackled by OLB Luis Honeywell. PENALTY: Offsides DT Sean Senat
18:25MSST11020 USMPassQB Alec Bullard is sacked by DE Carlos Ellington for -1 yard. .
18:17MSST21121 USMRunRB Adam Valdez carries for 21 yards. TOUCHDOWN!

36:20USM11030 MSSTPassQB Zack Freeman intercepted by CB LaRoy Crockett returned for 0 yards from the LOS. intended for WR Matt Lacy.
36:9MSST11030 MSSTRunRB Adam Valdez carries for 2 yards. Tackled by ILB Jayson Grimm.

The anti-Vanderbilt

Won 45-0 vs. Hawaii

Pulling a reverse Vanderbilt, the Aggies demolished the islanders with a huge game from Brandon Bullock (273 yards and 3 TDs). Their pass defense was also phenomenal, recording 4 INTs, 2 by CB Nathan McKinney. The lone disappointment was their K Ross King who went 1/3 and kept A&M from dropping 50.
