Rushing Rockstars

Here it is, the follow up to the aerial attack part 1 https://www.simfba.com/index.php?threads/aerial-attacks.2387/

Anyway, for this we have fewer inputs to the run game. The OL of course, the RBs (75% RB1, 25% for the better of RB2 and FB), and the QB (If he's a scrambler)

So we'll weight these cases: Case 1 (no scrambler) - OL = 1, RB = 1.75. Case 2 (scrambler) - OL = 1, QB = 1.5, RB = 1.5

Combining these will give us our "Rushing Attack" Score. Below is a chart of the "Rushing Attack" score I came up with and preseason rushing YPG. As you can see there is not nearly as good a relation as with passing maybe due to dramatically unbalanced strength of schedules, few game samples, coaches trying out gameplans and depth charts, AI teams, etc.. who knows. It could also be a plateau effect where you just have to be good enough at running to clear a low hurdle? Or high rushing teams are too 1-D and easy to defend? Beats me, but this probably makes this less insightful

In any case, on to results! For bragging rights at the least!

Let's look at the top-3, all from the B12 which is uh, different than my preconceptions about that conference. All are buoyed by very good scrambling QBs, a pretty good offensive line, and pretty solid RB as well.

Iowa State has the number 7 overall QB - Russel Lattimer. Combines phenomenal speed with great agility and fantastic arm talent to keep defenses honest. They also have a top-20 RB in Jaylen Lengel to complement him. They also have a deep OL, although there are no standout road-graders there are no weak spots either which could lead to good consistent yardage.

TCU has the number 2 overall QB - Luke Trahan, even better combination of physical traits who really doesn't have much of a weakness at all. Additionally, they have a phenomenal OL with 5 really highly ranked players. Sadly 4 of those are OT, so they will either have to play some guys out of position or take a big hit with their less talented OG and Cs. Luis Russell is their best RB with Corey Brockers as a good pass-catching change of pace. Overall, they should be set up nicely or some good performances on the ground.

Baylor is the far right outlier in the above plot for rushing YPG, however this isn't necessarily because their rushing game sucks. Instead, they went 11-3 in the preseason with an extremely solid passing attack. No wonder since Baylor has the number 6 overall QB - Travis Knebel. He also happens to be the only non-senior in the top-15 and is just a sophomore! With an A- potential as well, he should be a dominant force in a year (probably not 2 though, he has NFL written all over him). He is clearly the star of their offense and has Dietrich Smith at his side at RB as well. However, Baylor has a relatively poor offensive line, and this is likely going to be their weakness.

Anyway, that's all for this edition!
