Please reply to this thread with any bugs, errors, or strange occurrences that you find in games during the 2021 season. Unfortunately those issues will be final, but we can make sure they don't happen again. I will use this thread as a sort of "checklist" to attempt to complete for the next season.

3 7:34 UHOU 3 6 28 KANS Run QB Juan Wendelken carries for 7 yards. Tackled by DT Mike Brantly. PENALTY: Neutral Zone Infraction OLB Aaron Freeman

3 7:24 UHOU 3 10 23 KANS Pass QB Juan Wendelken incomplete. Intended for WR Sam Warmsley.

had this weird bug come up, a "free play" penalty on the defense that Houston gained yards on (and should have declined the penalty since it was now a 1st down result on the Kansas 21). Instead, they accepted the 5 yard penalty, which moved the ball down the field the appropriate 5 yards, but instead of 3rd and 1 it gave them 3rd and 10.

QB Hung-Chih Anderson incomplete. Intended for CB Jeff Wilson. PENALTY: False Start WR Christian Bembry ........A false start is a dead ball foul. The play would not have happened. If the coding is for a 5 yard foul and FST is assigned to it, there are a number of other fouls that are 5 yards that could be substituted (Illegal formation, ineligible downfield player, illegal motion, illegal shift). But if it is an actual false start, the play should not occur.

RB Bryan Brown carries for 1 yard. PENALTY: Neutral Zone Infraction SS Kenneth Cunningham .....There is no such foul in college football. Offside is the foul in college if they enter the NZ and cause the offense to react. Only the NFL calls that NZI. In the NFL - it's a dead ball foul, because the when the offense reacts to it, the play is blown dead. If the offense does not react to it, and they are in the NZ at the snap, it's a foul for Defensive Offside (and a live ball)

QB Erik Bourgeois incomplete. Intended for RB Victor Saint Fleur. PENALTY: Illegal Use of Hands CB Jeff Wilson - There is no foul of illegal use of hands in college football. The only time the terminology is sort of used is Hands to the Face and that is a 15 yard foul. Here, a 5 yard penalty was given for illegal use of hands.

Here are the 2 instances of offensive penalties not stopping touchdowns in a game:

16:3OHST11048 OHSTPassQB James Olynyk complete to WR Jason Pierre-Paul for 52 yards. TOUCHDOWN! PENALTY: False Start OG Josh Harris
15:40OHSTN/AN/A3 BGSUExtra PointK Jalen Woods's extra point attempt is good.

and

212:11OHST233 BGSURunFB Francisco Koch carries for 3 yards. TOUCHDOWN! PENALTY: Offensive Holding OT Leon Sosa
212:4OHSTN/AN/A3 BGSUExtra PointK Jalen Woods's extra point attempt is good.

Just a question on targeting distribution. In week 2 my #1 WR received no targets with a 26% target share. Can I assume this is due to exceptional coverage, poor matchups, other players getting open first or something else?

I think I know why:

  • First, remember that target distribution is not absolute. It is only the "ideal" distribution of targets. There are several reasons why that is not going to always play out exactly:
    • Screen passes do not consider the target distribution. For now, their target is always BK1.
    • On ~50% of pass plays (give or take given things like depth of route, pressure, chance, etc.), the pass is redirected away from the intended receiver. This is random but simulates things like QB reads, coverage, and hot routes.
    • On plays where the ball is directed to the original intended receiver, a weighted roll occurs to see who that receiver is. This is where the target distribution comes in.

[*]Second, stamina. It looks like David Young has some pretty poor stamina.

So let's do a little math given the above reasons.

  • First, it looks like your QB attempted 36 passes on Thursday. Then, I notice your RB had the most catches at 9, so I bet you're running at least a few screens. If you set your screens to about 10%, that means your QB only had about 32 or 33 passes that were not screens, and therefore, your WR1 could be the target.
  • Now, we have to remember that only about 50% of pass plays are thrown to the original intended receiver, but that is complicated by the fact that your WR1 technically could be the redirect target as well. If we assume the best case scenario, 13-14% of those redirects will go to your WR1, worst case, about 9%. So for 50% of passes thrown, 9-14% could have been directed at your WR1 (.50 * .09 = 4.5%, and .50 * .14 = 7%), which is about 1-2 targets (using 32-33 passes after screens are taken out).
  • On to situations where the play is directed to the intended receiver (the other 50%). If you set your WR1 to receive about 26% of targets, that would be about (.5 * .26 = 13% of total targets) 5 targets.
  • Adding all of that up means you would expect a WR receiving a 26% target distribution to get about 6-7 targets if your throw around 30-35 times. That, again, is subject to chance. It's entirely possible (but unlikely) that regardless of anything else that he doesn't receive any. He could also get closer to 10-11.

There is one additional factor, however, and that is stamina. David Young has *awful* stamina. He looks like he can only play a couple downs before he has to sit out for a bit. So it looks like when passes did go to your WR1 around the expected 6-7 times that they probably did, Young was on the sideline and someone else was playing his spot.

I appreciate the question and doing this made me think of some potential tweaks for stamina, such as:

  • Changing the thresholds for leaving the game and returning.
  • Only evaluating stamina for ball carriers on run plays and targets on pass plays (or maybe all players who ran a route).

From Week 2, Noon, Michigan State vs Texas Tech : Week 2: Saturday Noon | SFA - Simulation Football Association (simfba.com)

114:50TTU11023 TTUPassQB Reggie Chavis intercepted by DE Zhaire Kouandjio returned for -27 yards from the LOS. intended for RB Fernando Gonzalez.
114:41MIST1-4-4 TTUPassQB Preston Darling incomplete. Thrown Away.
114:24MISTN/AN/A3 TTUExtra PointK Maurice Woodson-Luster's extra point attempt is good.

What I think happened was MSU returned an INT for a pick 6, but the TD never counted and MSU got the ball at the "-4" yardline which is the endzone. MSU throws the ball away, but the next play still winds up with them kicking an XP. MSU leads 1-0.

Here's another from Week 2, Afternoon slot, TCU vs Duke:

11:4DUKE11012 DUKEPassQB Teddy Ezechukwu intercepted by CB John Canady returned for -20 yards from the LOS. intended for WR Robert Rodriguez.
10:52TCU1-8-8 DUKEPassQB Luke Trahan incomplete. Intended for WR Oren Colon. PENALTY: Unnecessary Roughness CB Shakir Webb
10:35TCUN/AN/A3 DUKEExtra PointK Kerry Rush's extra point attempt is good.

Seems like Pick-6's are the issue

32:19SDSU11028 SDSUPassQB Hung-Chih Anderson complete to TE Kahlil Gohara for 41 yards. Tackled by FS Kyle Balducci. PENALTY: Defensive Pass Interference ILB Jurrell Brown
31:58SDSU11016 TULSPassQB Hung-Chih Anderson complete to WR Trevor Herrera for 5 yards. Tackled by FS Kyle Balducci.

So the 15-yard DPI penalty was tacked on to the end of the pass. This is incorrect. Only a personal foul can be tacked on to the end of a pass play.

Major Game Play issue : Missouri lost possession somehow and Stanford scores on the next play. 10:44 should be Missouri ball with third and 4 to go. It did not but this could have determined the game outcome.

411:45MIZZ11025 MIZZRunRB Vyncint Brooks carries for 2 yards. Tackled by CB Alex Camargo.
411:7MIZZ2827 MIZZRunRB Vyncint Brooks carries for 4 yards. Ran out of bounds.

I think the bug here is there was actually a fumble but the sim didn't report it. Regardless, it will be looked into.

12:4NAVY4435 NAVYPuntP Brogan Wooten punts for 55 yards. WR Christian Bembry returns the ball 12 yards. Tackled by SS Tyler Bundy. PENALTY: Holding Returning Team CB Greg Weiss
11:54SDSU11012 NAVYPassQB Hung-Chih Anderson incomplete. Intended for WR Trevor Herrera

So Navy punts from their 35 yard line. The ball travels 55 yards, which is the SDSU 10 yard line. It is returned 12 yards, which would be the SDSU 22 yard line. There is a holding penalty on the return. This would be a spot foul if behind the end of the run, enforced 10 yards or half the distance if inside the 20 here. If it is beyond the end of the run, it is enforced from the end of the run. No matter what, I'm not sure how the ball winds up at the NAVY 12 yard like after this. The SDSU 12 makes sense. Not the Navy 12. We go 3 and out and kick a short FG. Something is broken here.

10:24BALL3624 BALLRunRB Anthony Fisher carries for -1 yard. Tackled by DE Eli Reyes. PENALTY: Offensive Holding OG Davontae Kaser
10:11BALL31024 BALLRunRB Anthony Fisher carries for 50 yards. Ran out of bounds.

Accepted a holding penalty on a 3rd down stop.

- should have declined it (4th + 7 is more favorable than 3rd down repeat)

- instead of the penalty moving the placement on the field (from the 24 to the 14), it kept the line of scrimmage the same but made it 3rd + 10 instead of 3rd + 16.

24:31BALL4233 BALLPuntP Ryan LaRoche punts for 57 yards. QB Aaron Diaz returns the ball 12 yards. Tackled by SS Andrew Loewen. PENALTY: Unnecessary Roughness CB James Davidson
24:19KANS177 BALLPassQB Ian Morgan complete to WR Junior Ogbah for 7 yards. TOUCHDOWN!

Ball State punt from their own 33 should place the start of the return at like the Kansas 10. Returned 12 yards puts it on the KU 22. Penalty on KU should move the ball back 15 to the KU 7, but instead appears to have moved it forward to the Ball State 7.

Incorrect sequence. Penalty appears to be the issue. Should be 1st and Goal on the MIZZ 2. Incomplete pass but Extra Point. Gave Pitt 1 point and 8 for the quarter.

18:16PITT344 MIZZRunRB Jaylen Cotts carries for 1 yard. Ran out of bounds. PENALTY: Defensive Holding OLB J.P. Bracy
17:56PITT1-1-1 MIZZPassQB Korey Gonzalez incomplete. Intended for WR Cordy Turner.
17:35PITTN/AN/A3 MIZZExtra PointK Josh Nelson's extra point attempt is good.
