Recruiting Class Rankings - Early Signing Edition

  1. Wichita St. (@anonemuss)

    • Points: 91

    • Commits:

      • C Roberto McCarthy 6-9 Fr [Texas**]

      • F Ramon Kennedy 6-6 Fr [Kansas**]

[*]

Bottom Line: Wichita St. benefits from having multiple commits. Despite both of them not cracking the top-85 recruits in the country, the Shockers can rely on these players to contribute early as they both have shown the ability to play a high amount of minutes in high school.

[*]

Omaha (AI)

  • Points: 86

  • Commits:

    • G Simon George 6-2 Fr [Colorado***]

    • F Darnell Price 6-5 Fr [Texas**]

    [*]

Bottom Line: The only other school with multiple early commits, Omaha interestingly has a lower-ranked early class than Wichita St. This is surprising given George's 3 star rating. Digging into the players a bit, it becomes clear that while George excels at shooting......he can't really do much else. He also looks to not really have a lot of room to grow in terms of ceiling. Look for Omaha's class to perform better immediately, but for them to be overtaken by classes with better potential ratings.

[*]

UMBC (@Rocketcan)

  • Points: 56

  • Commits:

    • G Aubrey Munoz 6-3 Fr [Maryland****]

    [*]

Bottom Line: UMBC might be having a mediocre year on the court this year, but they have nailed the only top-10 early signing commit. The Retrievers will need all Munoz has to offer, especially with their All-Star center graduating this year.

[*]

San Diego (@J'aimebo)

  • Points: 55

  • Commits:

    • F Cesar Watkins 6-7 Fr [California***]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Despite only having a 3 star rating, Watkins has scouts across the country drooling over this kid's high ceiling. He doesn't have much to offer right away, but the Toreros will have to bank on him sitting and learning the ropes for a long-term return on their investment.

[*]

Western Michigan (@Jieret)

  • Points: 53

  • Commits:

    • C Brad Moody 7-0 Fr [Latvia***]

    [*]

Bottom Line: The "Large Latvian" is coming to Kalamazoo! One of them most sought-after recruits in the entire 2020 class, the.....interestingly....named Moody will take all seven foot nothing of himself to play for the Broncos. The highest-rated center to commit on early signing day, Moody has a good combination of immediate impact as well as high upside.

[*]

Florida Gulf Coast (AI)

  • Points: 50

  • Commits:

    • F Stuart Spencer 6-8 Fr [Florida***]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Spencer is an interesting prospect in that he doesn't have very much in the way of initial skills besides perhaps a decent paint game. But, once again, the word "potential" plays a key roll in this player's evaluation. He has a significant upside if FGC can wait long enough for him to develop.

[*]

Oregon (@brightfalls)

  • Points: 48 (tied)

  • Commits:

    • G Terence Walters 6-1 Fr [Canada****]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Perhaps the best shooter of the early sign commits, Walters has some deficiencies that have some scouts worried. Particularly his lack of growth (in terms of skills and height. Walters measures in at only 6'1") and potential upside has given pause to a number of programs. In the end, Walters will need to produce early to prove his critics wrong.

[*]

  • Points: 48 (tied)

  • Commits:

    • G Ernest Carroll 6-3 Fr [indiana**]

    [*]

Bottom Line: We've talked about upside in this article, but get ready for some more! When you look up "upside" in the dictionary, you see a picture of the Mustang's newest guard, Ernest Carroll. He likely won't contribute much early (and could probably benefit from a redshirt year), but this kid has the chance to be a real force in the future for SMU.

[*]

Washington St. (@TuscanSota)

  • Points: 48 (tied)

  • Commits:

    • C Nicolas Johnson 7-1 Fr [California*]

    [*]

Bottom Line: "What in the hell is a 1 star player doing all the way up here??" you may ask. Well...once again, potential, upside, future! Johnson has a MASSIVE frame at 7'1" and could dominate the middle of the court if given the chance to sit for a while. The Cougars certainly hope they found a diamond in the rough with Johnson.

[*]

Seattle (AI)

  • Points: 47

  • Commits:

    • G Erick Ray 6-3 Fr [Washington***]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Seattle has a decent immediate impact player in Ray. He will have to work on most parts of his game, except for his ability to hang on to the ball.

[*]

Jacksonville (AI)

  • Points: 43

  • Commits:

    • G Theodore Harris 6-4 Fr [Florida***]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Harris chooses to stay in his home state by committing to Jacksonville. While a high-effort player, Harris likely will have a limited contribution overall for his team. This is especially true as he has probably reached his athletic ceiling.

[*]

Portland (AI)

  • Points: 41

  • Commits:

    • F Ricardo Washington 6-6 Fr [Oregon**]

    [*]

Bottom Line: Washington takes up the last spot in this rankings for a few reasons. First, he is simply not an inspiring recruit. He lacks the ability to finish in the paint and can't really shoot. But beyond all the technical reasons, there is one glaring one: His parents lacked the common-fucking-sense to cross the border to their namesake state to have their kid. I simply can't condone recruiting a player that obviously has a poor intelligence pedigree.
