Kent State 27-12 Best performance of the week: Akron def. Buffalo 26-23 Sure, other teams won by more, but an Akron win against Buffalo, who hadn't lost a MAC game before week 7, puts them in pole position in the East. This matchup provided QB Josh Pennel an opportunity to prove he could do well against a top tier defense, and he did just that, going 24-38 for 333 yards and 2 TDs. Akron's inability to move the ball on the ground (as a team they had 19 carries for 47 yards) may be concerning when it comes to beating teams with a strong secondary, but they won't see many of those teams the rest of the season. No QB in the MAC does a better job at spreading the ball around than Pennel, as he has 3 strong weapons at WR in Paredes, Stamets and McCoy, which makes the Akron offense difficult to stop. Worst performance of the week: Bowling Green def. Northern Illinois 26-0 At this point I sound like broken record when reviewing Northern Illinois' offensive performances. NIU's QB Darius Paredes went 8-14 for 30 yards and was sacked twice. On the ground, the Huskies carried the ball 32 times for 58 yards. Yes, Bowling Green has an above-average defense, but at what point will the NIU staff reassess their offensive gameplan and take a different approach with their playcalling? All signs point to seeing them continue to struggle moving the ball this year. Adding insult to injury, Bowling Green QB-turned-RB Jurickson Elflein ran the ball 34 times for a MAC record 256 yards and 3 TDs. The days when Northern Illinois beat Wisconsin seem like a dream of a prior lifetime given recent results. With that result, Western Michigan is in a great position to represent the West Division in the MAC Championship game. WMU still has to play both CMU and EMU, but you have to like their chances in both those games. Ball State brought home their first win on the season, and as such they can still make some noise in conference play. Next week's game against Akron would be a good opportunity to show they've learned a lot from their difficult out-of-conference schedule. East Divison TeamConferenceOverallAkron3-05-1Ohio2-14-1Bowling Green2-13-3Buffalo2-13-4Kent State1-23-3Miami (OH)1-33-4 Akron's win over Buffalo gives them the inside lane to win the East Division. With it, they have beaten 2 of the 3 teams that are on their tails in the conference standings (Ohio and Buffalo). Ohio performed as expected with their throttling of Toledo, but they still need Akron to drop 2 games this season. Bowling Green has found new life with a new offense, however they still have to play practically the entire division (except Kent State).

Buffalo 16-13 Bye: Kent State, Ball State, Northern Illinois Best performance of the week: Ohio def. Central Michigan 37-26 Bobcat QB Yusei Asencio has quickly become a leading candidate for conference MVP this season. Asencio was able to stand in the pocket, unharmed, to go 21-32 for 452 yards and 3 TDs against one of the more talented defenses in the conference. His favorite target, WR Humberto Mauger, had an all-timer with 11 receptions for 314 yards and 2 TDs to scorch the Chippewa secondary. CMU RB Tanner Lake, a leading rusher in the MAC conference, was held relatively in check on the ground with 135 yards on 32 carries, but also had 6 receptions for 43 yards and a TD through the air. After dropping a game against Akron last week, Ohio should be happy with this win over a talented Central Michigan team. Worst performance of the week: Western Michigan def. Toledo 39-0 There are very few positives to take away from this game for Toledo. Usually coaches can at least look to no injuries from a game, so I guess it's just good injuries haven't been added to the sim yet? On the ground Toledo averaged only 2.5 yards per carry on 42 attempts. QB Eric Diekman went 9-19 for 34 yards. All together that equals only 139 yards of total offense. Combine that with 4 turnovers (3 interceptions thrown, 1 fumble), and you start getting the picture on how they were shut out in this game. Adding insult to injury, P Jon Puello had the 3rd lowest punt average (49.45 ypp) of a MAC punter in a game this season (63 stat lines) while being asked to punt 11 times. Things won't get much easier for Toledo as they travel to face Yusei Asencio and the Ohio Bobcats next week. Despite being one of those team, Central Michigan still finds themselves in control of their own destiny. All signs are pointing to CMU's showdown at the end of the season with Western Michigan being the game that settles who will represent the West in the conference championship. While Ball State's record is disappointing, 3 of those 5 losses come at the hands of top-15 teams (Cal, Purdue, and ODU). Will that stiff competition at the beginning of the season benefit them down the stretch? Only time will tell. Toledo was able to snatch a win vs UCLA in week 2, which might be the highlight of their season. East Divison TeamConferenceOverallAkron 2-0 4-1 Buffalo 2-0 3-3 Ohio 1-1 3-1 Kent State 1-1 3-2 Bowling Green 1-1 2-3 Miami (OH) 1-2 3-3 As much as the West has its fill of underperforming teams this year, the East has its own share of teams who are overperforming. Akron and Buffalo are 2 teams who have different winning formulas, Akron with a high powered offense and Buffalo with a stout defense. Ohio, led by QB Yusei Asencio, has emerged as one of the leaders of the East Division this season, and defeating my preseason favorite to win the conference last week only cements their status as a team to be taken seriously. Bowling Green found success last week after a change at the QB position, so they'll be looking to build on that performance as we approach the second half of the season.

Bowling Green 24-15 Old Dominion def. Ball St 37-28 Bye: Ohio, Toledo OOC Record: 1-1 Best performance of the week: Akron defeated Louisiana 38-17 One could question the level of competition here as Akron beat a winless Ragin' Cajun team, but simply, the Zips looked the best. Hats off to QB Josh Pennel, who was outstanding on the night, going 26-34 for 356 yards and 5 TDs. Pennel has the ability to carry Akron to a few wins this year, especially in a division as wide open as the East. RB Christian Adams is flying a bit under the radar with Pennel playing as well as he did, but Adams finished the game with 18 carries for 99 yards and 9 receptions for 110 yards and a TD. WRs J'Mon McCoys, (8 catches, 79 yards, 2 TDs) and Josh Paredes (4 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD) rounded out Pennel's favorite targets on a night that will have Zips fans wanting more this season. DT Reyes Freeman showed off his motor running sideline-to-sideline, ending the game with 10 tackles, 1.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks. Worst performance of the week: Eastern Michigan defeated Northern Illinois 14-3 Back-to-back weeks with Northern Illinois showing a disappointing performance. The Huskies started the season strong, defeating two Big Ten opponents in Northwestern and Wisconsin, but have since laid a couple eggs with 6 total points against UTSA and Eastern Michigan. Once again, QB Darius Paredes was not able to get the ball downfield, going 11-14 for 64 yards passing. Eastern Michigan's rush defense was equally up to the task allowing just 102 yards on the ground to 5 different ball carriers. Ron Swanson's nephew, EMU QB Ryan Swanson, had an adequate game, 23-37, 211 yards and EMU RB Mike Merrifield was able to pound the ball in for 2 TDs as the Eagles nearly doubled Northern Illinois' yardage output. Best performance of the week: Ohio defeated Nebraska 55-0 Even if this wasn't the only win for the conference last week, it would have been a strong candidate for the performance of the week. Nebraska has struggled all season and the Bobcats did not hold back. Ohio QB Yusei Asencio lit up Cornhusker DBs as he went 34-45 for 607 yards, 5 TDs and 1 Int, and he had two friendly faces in WRs Jerald Paulsen and Humberto Mauger, who both had 241 yards receiving. Ohio RB Quenton Rienzo only had 27 yards rushing, but that's a moot point when your QB performs as well as Asencio did. The Bobcat defense deserves equal praise as they shut out Nebraska and held them to only 161 yards on offense. Ohio has only played two games this year but their performances are making them the team to beat in the MAC up to this point. Worst performance of the week: UTSA defeated Northern Illinois 24-3 Plenty of options for worst performance this week as the conference struggled mightily against superior opponents. I decided to go with Northern Illinois, who had the opportunity to start the season 3-0 in a division where no other team is better than 1-2. Furthermore, they had that opportunity against a UTSA team that was 0-2 entering week 3. What followed? NIU put up a measly 174 yards on offense and made UTSA QB Michael Omameh, who wasn't sacked the entire game, look like an all-conference QB. NIU QB Darius Paredes was able to go 15-16 but for only 73 yards as he dumped the ball off to RB D'Angelo Martino 7 times for a sad 25 yards. The Huskies' defense wasn't able to force a turnover or pressure the QB which led to a comfortable first win of the season for UTSA. After a solid start to the year the MAC teams will go limping into the conference season. QB Scribner put up very impressive numbers and the Broncos had 3 WRs go over 100 yards receiving including WR Marcus Ekstrom hauling in 9 catches for 216 yards and 3 TDs. Their defensive performance needs to be praised as well, shutting out the Tigers in "Death Valley." DE Ryan Semien had 3 TFLs and a sack while CB D'Angelo Baldwin and ILB Andrew Nuno had a pick each. To round it all out, K Luis Cunningham was a perfect 4-4 in FGs. Worst performance of the week: NC State defeated Central Michigan 24-21 The Chippewas entered the season with a lot of expectations, being the only MAC team ranked in the preseason top 25, and their debut was a dud. QB Jamie Holmes threw the ball well enough, however 3 Ints proved to be too much against a solid NC State team. Throw in a fumble from RB Tanner Lake, who had 97 yards on 24 carries, and you'll see how Central Michigan did more harm to themselves than good. It's still early in the season and this team has the talent to win a lot of games, but they'll need to rebound with a cleaner performance against ECU next week. 16. Good evening all. The 2021 season is right around the corner so I am going to be taking a look at the MAC conference rosters and try to assess where these teams stack up against each other. Much is unknown about many of these teams and where they will finish at the end of the season. In my eyes 10-12 are pretty tight, while not a lot separates 2-9. Let's take a look at how the rosters look: 12. Toledo - @DeanCraigPelton Based on roster alone, Toledo is easily the worst team in the conference. They have the fewest 4 star players (8) suiting up for them, and with only one A overall player (3 star CB Lou Hechavarria), @DeanCraigPelton has his work cut out for him this season. Look for a rushing attack that includes RB Jerald Garner and FB Hunter Fulton to try and push the ball down field. Is sophomore QB Jeremy McNitt the leader this team will need to win some games? Only time will tell. The defense will struggle to keep offenses at bay so it could be a long season for the Rockets. 11. Northern Illinois [Vacant] With only two players who are A overall, the Huskies will find it difficult to come out on top in too many games this season. The Northern Illinois offense will be led by senior QB Darius Paredes who will have his work cut out for him to find a reliable target or a running game to take the pressure off of him. Keep an eye out for junior TE Delino Bertolet as a potential favorite of Paredes' this year. Speed rusher Michael Dyson will look to anchor the front 7, which will be the strength of this defense. Punter Miguel Belnome is a leading candidate for MAC Punter of the Year. 10. Eastern Michigan [Vacant] This year might be too early for Eastern Michigan to make a big impact on the conference as they have solid junior and sophomore classes. The overall youth of the team will likely lead to inconsistent performances all year long. The biggest question mark for the offense is who will be their QB? If no one steps forward, look for the Eagles to struggle moving the ball. They will get some good performances from their defense, led by freshman team All-American ILB Eddie Wisniewski, but lack of experience will hurt them against teams who have a strong identity. 9. Akron [Vacant] Akron has some talented players but will their lack of depth come back to hurt them over a long, grueling MAC season. QB Josh Pennel will have some weapons to try and get the ball to in WR J'Mon McCoy and TE Joe Clemens, but they could struggle to find a RB who will keep defenses honest. FS Matt Perez and DE Ben Storen will look to anchor a defense without a lot of expectations and will struggle to keep the Zips in the hunt for a bowl game. 8. Miami (OH) [Vacant] Miami will have one of the best players in the conference in FB Danny Kipnis, who is a preseason 1st team All-American, but the RedHawks will need to utilize Kipnis perfectly for him to win them any number of games this year. Couple that with the fact that no QB seems to want to win the starting position and Miami will be a tough team to read this year. The good news is that Kipnis will have OG Jordan Stanley and OT Carson Montelus to anchor the line and clear a path for him. OLB JC Curry will likely lead this defense in tackles and Kipnis will try to drag the team to a bowl game. 7. Ohio - @Osu Most teams know what Ohio will try to do on offense: have QB Yusei Asencio get the ball to WR Jerald Paulsen as many times as possible a game. This combo has the talent to beat some teams by themselves. Big OG Austin Cingrani is a all-conference caliber guard in the interior of the line. The Bobcat defense, led by CB Craig Satin, has the potential to keep them in a lot of games, but the lack of running game to keep defenses honest might prevent Ohio from competing for an East Division title. 6. Buffalo [Vacant] Buffalo will be carried by their defense, as it will likely be either the #2 defense in the MAC this year. Most teams will be looking to avoid throwing against CB Darrius Marks and FS Hunter Smith, but if they try to move the ball on the ground, they'll run right into DE Yoel Bender and DT Patrick Jones up front. While they have talent on the offensive side of the ball, it is young talent, who will likely struggle to find consistency. Look for QB Jeff Whitehead and FB Craig Crosby to lead a rushing attack that can take the Bulls to a bowl game in year 1. 5. Ball St - @npklemm Ball St will be a tough team to gameplan against, with talented QB Jay Larkin leading a balanced offensive attack alongside speedster RB Anthony Fisher and youngster RB Garett Cordier. Larkin will have OT Archie Mbah a Moute protecting his back and giving him enough time to get the ball to WR Isaac Beachy. This offense will give a lot of defenses fits, but is it enough to win the West Division and make it to the MAC championship game? I don't think they're there yet. The defense should be able to keep them in enough games to have the Cardinals challenging for a 10 win season. 4. Bowling Green - @PoopyRhinoPickle Senior QB Jurickson Elflein's performance will likely define Bowling Green's success this season. Elflein, who is essentially a RB at the QB position, has difficulty passing the ball but can torch defenses on the right day. 2nd team All-American OT Elijah Green leads the best O-Line in the conference, who will look to steamroll defenses up and down the field. A stingy front 7 on defense can perform well but youth on that side of the ball can leave some scratching their heads after some games. With the East Division much more wide-open than the West, the Falcons will be looking to push towards the Championship game. 3. Kent St [Vacant] Kent St. is a darkhorse to challenge for the MAC title and will be looking to find success through RB Jalen Johnson, who could end the season leading the MAC in rush yards. Most of his success will be behind a strong interior offensive line, particularly OG Gonzalez Roberts, who pro scouts are eyeing as a potential early entry after this season. DE Robin Burwell will be looking to make opposing QB's lives a nightmare off the edge and CB Walter Guy will keep his side of the field locked down. It's difficult to not mention the best player on the team, 5 star K Russell Wright, who will be looking to put points on the board anytime the Golden Flashes get the ball into the opponent's half. 2. Western Michigan - @Jieret Few QBs across the country should be as happy as Broncos' Theo Scribner. Why? Scribner has 2 of the best WRs in the conference and a steady OT in Justin Paul protecting him. Junior WR Durham Simmons has NFL scouts salivating and he might be the 2nd best WR on the team. Senior WR Marcus Ekstrom will be just as eager to prove he can play at the next level, we'll see if Scribner can keep them both happy with targets. What will prevent this team from reaching the next level? Likely the lack of a running game and inconsistency on defense. CB Nolan Nickerson could be an interception machine, and a stout, but young interior defensive line will cause havoc for opposing RBs. Look out for Broncos games to light up the scoreboard. 1. Central Michigan - @Tazer When evaluating the rosters, it's clear there is a team that is a cut above the rest and it's Central Michigan. There are five 5 star players in the conference and the Chippewas have 3 of them. It's also worth noting that all 3 of them are underclassman. They're ranked in the Preseason Top 25 for a reason and their defense is incredibly strong with playmakers at each level. Nose Tackle Miguel Peterson will be stopping the rush at the point of attack and FS Kyle Headley will be roaming the secondary, giving QBs headaches. But the real star of the defense is sophomore OLB David Brown Jr., who was a Preseason All-American snub. If there is a weakness on this team is has to the QB position, with leading candidate being the inexperience Brandon Alexander. WR David Young leads a talented, deep WR corps who will be looking for Alexander to feed them consistently. Central Michigan's goal should be to win the MAC conference and, depending on their out-of-conference success, push for a playoff appearance. Tomorrow: All-MAC teams
