The rest is history. Elflein had games against Hawaii, Northern Illinois and Buffalo where he ran for over 200 yards and averaged over 7 yards per carry and finished the season with 9 100 yard games. Defensive MVP - DT Chris LaDouceur - 62 tackles, 15 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, 1 FF Chris LaDouceur was a statline filler all season long for the Bowling Green Falcons. He finished 2nd on the team in Tackles, TFLs and Sacks and was 2nd in the MAC in Sacks (behind teammate OLB Sandy Rankin). The Senior was a monster in the middle and was selected as a 1st team All-Conference Defensive Lineman at the conclusion of the season. Returning starter Dexter Reed went 6-3 under center last season, but he didn't light up defenses, completing only 56% of his passes. The Quarterback room has plenty of talent as redshirt Freshman Travis Kingery is eligible to play and Elite 11 true Freshman Big Melvin Velasquez graduated a semester early to become an early enrollee and get a good grasp on the playbook. The feeling around campus is that the starting position is available to fight for during preseason scrimmages and any Quarterback will have a short leash once the season starts. The 2022 roster may require Running Back by committee to replace Jurickson Elflein's productivity, and even then it may not be possible. Redshirt Sophomore Ryan Cabinda is the favorite to receive the most snaps, but he'll be competing with Senior Francisco Morris and Sophomore Zach Graterol every week. Talented Freshman Taylor Brinkley will likely redshirt barring unforeseen injury issues at the position. The Falcons return some experience at the Wide Receiver and Tight End positions. Junior Wide Receiver Nick Fields had over 700 yards receiving last season and will look to compliment Junior Jordan Suter, who redshirted last year. Depth was a priority in the offseason, with 3 incoming Freshman. Kenneth De Jesus is the most talented of the bunch and could push upperclassman to get on the field. Returning starter Allen Tomlinson will look to build on almost 300 yards receiving at the Tight End position last season. Offensive Line will be a combination of talented experience, and new faces. All-conference candidates exist in OT Elijah Greene and OG Jared Simon, both of whom played in all 13 games last season. Who else will line up with them? Redshirt Freshman and Don Williamson and redshirt Sophomore Jordan Marte will likely battle it out for the Right Tackle spot. True Freshman Bam Lamp is a strong candidate to start at Guard, but he'll have to fight off redshirt Freshman Bennie Daniels. Center may be the most difficult to call. Junior William Matz has been in the program the longest but Freshman Khalid Davis is a highly coveted recruit who just might be able to fight him off. There's also the possibility of other lineman who lose out at the Guard or Tackle position who could slide in at Center. Defense There are some big holes to fill on the Defensive Line, as the Falcons need to replace all-conference players in DT Chris LaDouceur and DE Trayce Alvarez. The coaching staff likes who they have at DT in redshirt Junior Phillip Bell. Bell is said to live in the weightroom and has a high motor on the field. Less is established at the Defensive End position. Returning starter Damontae Lim, a Sophomore, will compete with 2 other players, Caleb Borbon and Jake Cuthbert, to try and get pressure on the QB. Lim is looking to step up production after only recording 2 sacks last season. There will be some familiar names at the Linebacker position this season. Both starting ILBs return with Evan Mangen and Ryan Goodson looking to build on solid seasons last year. 1st team All-MAC player Sandy Rankin returns as well at OLB after leading the conference with 9 sacks. Who will start opposite of him is the big question of the offseason. Naz Fiers, Leyson Escobar both have time in the program but haven't played many snaps and true Freshmen Zach Guzman and Raffy Kahnle arrive on campus as high ceiling players. The Falcon Secondary has a lot of people excited headed into the 2022 season. It all starts with local talent Donald Dingus, arguably the nation's top high school prospect, at Cornerback. The 5 star recruit looks to start day 1 and is hoping to shut down some of the pass happy offenses in the country. Cornerback is probably the deepest position on the roster with Kenneth Edwards, who led the defense with 3 interceptions last year, returning. Christian Minaya, Jake Bergen, and Jace Light will all compete for the Nickel Cornerback spot making it difficult for Richie O'Malley, Bowling Green's 2nd talented Freshman Cornerback to get much playing time. Greg Sprinkle looks most likely to start at Free Safety, despite 2 talented true Freshmen committing. Redshirt Sophomore Ray-Ray Williams and Freshman Austin Pena will be battling every practice up until opening day to settle who will start at Strong Safety. Special Teams Special Teams was able to improve throughout the season in 2021 once Rudy Howell replaced JJ Ryan at Kicker. Ryan was only able to go 3 for 8 before being pulled for Howell who performed well down the stretch, finishing 18 of 24 attempts. Both players return but the position will likely belong to Howell through the entire season. Talented Freshman Evan Carter will likely redshirt as Howell uses up his eligibility. Walker Leon returns as starting Punter after a solid season last year. Matt Brown is gone to the NFL, so open tryouts will be held to see who can replace him as lead return man. Don't be surprised to see RB Francisco Morris and WR Chris Allen fielding a lot of kicks leading up to the season. 4. For discussion purposes, some NFL draft statistics: Schools with most players drafted 7 - Arkansas 6 - Wisconsin 5 - Auburn, Michigan State, Oregon State, Texas A&M, TCU, USC 4 - Alabama, Boise State, Colorado State, Illinois, Kentucky, Syracuse Did these school meet expectations during the season? He performed well at the Elite 11 camps and will likely redshirt and learn the playbook this year. Brinkley will definitely redshirt, his low potential may give room for a RB to overtake him in the future. Receivers & TEs - It was important to add some depth at the WR position. De Jesus will battle in the spring and fall camps to make the starting lineup, but will being the #3 receiver be enough to prevent him from being redshirted? Time will tell. Tight end was one of the least talented positions on the roster, so it was important to add a couple players there. O-Line - I'm fortunate enough to have a couple very good offensive lineman going into next season. That gives me some runway to redshirt and develop some big boys up front. Having said that, Khalid Davis will contend for a starting position at center this year and Bam Lamp will plug right in at a starting guard spot. All hail Bam Lamp. DEFENSE PositionNameStarsOverallPotentialDETy Ivie4CBDTLuis Seumalo3CB+DTEli Bedrosian3CCDTGil DeLuca3CBOLBZach Guzman4CCOLBRaffy Kahnle4CC+CBDonald Dingus5BA-CBRichie O'Malley4BC+FSMichael Puig4CD+FSSpencer Taylor4CCSSAustin Pena4BC+ D-Line - I think Ty Ivie will be a stud in the future, but he will likely redshirt this year. I didn't really want to get 3 DTs, especially given that I play a 3-4, but it just kinda worked out that way. It might mean a transition to a 4-3 in the future depending on how things play out. Linebackers - OLB is another one of those weak position so that was a very high priority to address ASAP. Both Guzman and Kahnle will likely redshirt, especially considering I have the nation's leading sack artist returning at OLB (Sandy Rankin). In retrospect I would've liked to get an ILB instead of a DT, but I have good young-ish ILBs now so it can be addressed next year. Secondary - Improving the secondary was the highest priority for the incoming class. The best teams in the MAC throw the ball well and they were able to throw it pretty easily against us last year. In my biased opinion Donald Dingus was the single best high school prospect in the country last year and will immediately move into the starting lineup. Will Richie O'Malley redshirt? Hard to say with 2 returning CBs who played a lot last year. Puig and Taylor may have 4 years of competition to see who gets more snaps and Pena is likely a day 1 starter at SS. SPECIAL TEAMS PositionNameStarsOverallPotentialKEvan Carter3CA Special Teams - I largely went with the Scott Frost approach and ignored special teams this year. Carter will redshirt since I have a decent returning kicker, but he'll be a good one for the future, I hope. Considering how OP punting was last year I decided to ignore the position. I'll probably come to regret that once it gets nerfed.
  12. With the NFL Draft coming up, let's look at how some of the top MAC prospects fared at their respective Pro Days, and how they compared to others within their position group. Danny Kipnis - FB Miami (OH) Overall: A- 40 Yard Dash: 4.54 (2 of 22 FBs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.99 (1 of 22) 3 Cone Drill: 6.65 (2 of 22) Bench Press: 36 (1 of 22) Vertical Jump: 40.51 (2 of 22) Broad Jump: 133 (1 of 22) Catching Drill: 7.82 (2 of 22) Route Running Drill: 4.21 (3 of 22) Inside Run Drill: 8.50 (1 of 22) Outside Run Drill: 7.25 (2 of 22) Run Block Drill: 6.04 (4 of 22) Pass Block Drill: 5.78 (6 of 22) 2021 Season: 14 carries, 74 yards, 1 rush TD; 5 recs, 47 rec yards, 1 rec TD A couple things are pretty obvious when looking at Kipnis. First, he was underutilized while at Miami, second, he's a physical phenom who, outside of blocking drills, ranks in the top 3 of every drill amongst the 22 FBs who have competed in the Pro Days so far. Will the blocking drills hurt his draft stock? I doubt it considering how well he did in every other drill. His inside running score (8.50) is better than every running back who's competed as well, including Heisman winner Bruce Dawson (8.11) (!). Fullback is a tough position to predict but given how well he catches out of the backfield and runs between the tackles, I'm projecting he'll go in the 4th round. Projection: 4th round Matt Perez - FS Akron Overall: B 40 Yard Dash: 4.46 (6 of 34 FSs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.88 (1 of 34) 3 Cone Drill: 6.57 (3 of 34) Bench Press: 22 (11 of 34) Vertical Jump: 37.88 (10 of 34) Broad Jump: 132 (T1 of 34) Man Coverage Drill: 6.40 (12 of 34) Zone Coverage Drill: 9.12 (2 of 34) 2021 Season: 50 total tackles, 3 TFLs Elite agility and Zone Coverage ability will help Perez find a home in the right scheme. There will certainly be concern about his lack of production at the college level, but Perez is one of the highest rated overall free safeties, not one of the deepest positions, and has a Potential rating of A, meaning he will find a home. Projection: 3rd-4th round Michael Dyson - DE Northern Illinois Overall: B 40 Yard Dash: 4.46 (1 of 65 DEs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.91 (3 of 65) 3 Cone Drill: 6.55 (2 of 65) Bench Press: 33 (18 of 65) Vertical Jump: 39.35 (1 of 65) Broad Jump: 128 (4 of 65) Run Stop Drill: 6.30 (31 of 65) Pass Rush Drill: 7.88 (4 of 65) 2021 Season: 52 total Tackles, 18 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 FF Athleticism off the edge. That's what Michael Dyson brings to NFL teams. Average against the run but being very good in Pass Rush will make him appealing at the next level. He didn't produce a lot of sacks but was clearly able to be disruptive in the backfield, with 18 TFLs. Defensive end is a deep position, but Dyson's A Potential presents a lot of upside that will be tough to resist. Projection: 4th-5th round Yusei Asencio - QB Ohio Overall: B 40 Yard Dash: 4.72 (19 of 48 QBs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.43 (32 of 48) 3 Cone Drill: 7.12 (22 of 48) Bench Press: 26 (16 of 48) Vertical Jump: 31.91 (36 of 48) Broad Jump: 120 (32 of 48) Accuracy Drill: 8.91 (1 of 48) Distance Drill: 8.34 (3 of 48) 2021 Season: 7044 passing yards (470 ypg), 55 pass TDs, 7 Ints The biggest name of MAC players who participated in the Pro Days, Asencio proved his passing abilities are up there with the best, with the highest score in the Accuracy Drill. The Heisman finalist didn't have the best showing physically, particularly his lack of explosiveness in the drills, but he ran the quickest 40 time of all Pocket QBs and showed above average strength. There is always a demand for franchise quarterbacks and Asencio's production at the college level will make him a highly desire QB. Projection: late 1st round Matt Brown - WR Bowling Green Overall: B- 40 Yard Dash: 4.45 (26 of 72 WRs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.96 (4 of 72) 3 Cone Drill: 6.73 (15 of 72) Bench Press: 23 (38 of 72) Vertical Jump: 38.14 (29 of 72) Broad Jump: 129 (25 of 72) Catching Drill: 8.36 (4 of 72) Route Running Drill: 8.76 (6 of 72) 2021 Season: 73 recs, 1004 rec yards, 5 rec TDs Matt Brown flew a bit under the radar this year with some other wide receivers in the MAC putting up more ridiculous stat lines. Physically, he tests out only slightly above average, but he performed very well in the wide receiver drills, catching everything thrown his way. He has B Potential, which isn't bad, and should allow him to make a roster, but he won't be lighting up the league any time soon. Projection: 6th round Marcus Ekstrom - WR Western Michigan Overall: B- 40 Yard Dash: 4.53 (41 of 72 WRs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.97 (6 of 72) 3 Cone Drill: 6.72 (13 of 72) Bench Press: 23 (37 of 72) Vertical Jump: 41.45 (1 of 72) Broad Jump: 133 (2 of 72) Catching Drill: 7.07 (31 of 72) Route Running Drill: 9.59 (1 of 72) 2021 Season: 115 recs, 1468 rec yards, 11 rec TDs 2 things are for certain: Ekstrom can jump out the gym, and he's going to be sticking his routes. The only problem is his speed, strength, and catching are pretty average. Not really what you want to see from a wide receiver. There is something to be said though for the ability to create separation from a defensive back, and that trait will find Ekstrom a home at the next level. Projection: 5th-6th round De'Vondre Grilli - CB Ball State Overall: C+ 40 Yard Dash: 4.59 (45 of 69 CBs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.97 (18 of 69) 3 Cone Drill: 6.59 (6 of 69) Bench Press: 21 (11 of 69) Vertical Jump: 39.67 (5 of 69) Broad Jump: 130 (6 of 69) Man Coverage Drill: 5.57 (50 of 69) Zone Coverage Drill: 8.07 (20 of 69) 2021 Season: 42 total tackles, 4 ints, 1 FR Grilli had a pretty good senior season, picking off 4 passes, and tested out really well in most of the drills ran at the Pro Day. His lack of top-end speed and poor Man Coverage will likely ultimately cost him when it comes to the draft. He will be looking to get an invite to the Combine to have a chance to rectify his performance in those drills. Projection: UDFA Damontae Teheran - C Central Michigan Overall: C+ 40 Yard Dash: 5.74 (12 of 17 Cs) 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.27 (6 of 17) 3 Cone Drill: 6.90 (1 of 17) Bench Press: 39 (4 of 17) Vertical Jump: 36.45 (1 of 17) Broad Jump: 123 (5 of 17) Run Block Drill: 6.92 (6 of 17) Pass Block Drill: 6.06 (12 of 17) Teheran possesses above average athletic ability and has proven to be a pretty good run blocker. He can be a bit of a liability in the pass game which will hurt his draft stock but in a year where center is not a very deep position, it wouldn't surprise me to him taken late in the draft. Projection: 7th round
