  1. One and Maeda-ne? Junior Quarterback Jeff Maeda was given the nod for the starting role following a summer camp battle in which he narrowly beat out redshirting freshman Tyler Summers, but shaky performance throughout camp, coupled with an atrocious debut, have the coaches in Lawrence reconsidering the position. Maeda wasn't specifically mentioned by name in the post game presser as an issue, but anyone with a pulse could tell the kid from Ripon, California just wasn't quite comfortable under center in the big time of college football. ESPN's Houston affiliate pointed out that Maeda found a rythem early, including a stretch on the second KU drive of the game in which he went 5/5 for 41 yards, keeping the Cougar defense honest which resulted in the first ever Kansas touchdown, an 8 yard carry by Bene' Humber. The following Houston drive was short but featured an electrifying 61 yard pass play, and when the Cougars missed a field goal, it gave Kansas the ball at their own 9 yard line. Despite a relatively quiet crowd, with his back against the wall, Maeda seemed to be shaking in his boots, throwing two passes into the dirt and dumping a third off well short of the first down, setting up a KU Randy Bates punt. A first down sack in the second quarter had Maeda rattled. He threw the first of 3 interceptions on the following play, giving Houston much needed momentum. If Houston kicker Donte Link decided to bring any amount of kicking talent at all, the Cougars could have been sitting with 9 points on the board. Maeda's next string of passes, across two drives, tallied 1/4 for 6 yards, with the 3rd incompletion resulting in his second INT of the day, a huge pick 6 by FS Dieugot Walker that put Houston on the board for the first time ever. Finishing out the first half, Maeda went 1/5 for 16 yards, scrambled about and dove "forward" for a loss of 2 yards, and a culminating 3rd interception. His final 10 pass attempts of the first half yielded just two completions to the home team, three to the away team, five into the dirt, and 22 yards of positivity. When KU headed into the locker room at the half, a chorus of boos rung out as Maeda scampered past, and with good reason: he'd managed to have a negative 21.52 passer rating over that stretch. During halftime, legend has it that Maeda wasn't consoled by anybody, but tight end Alex Atkins did tell him he needed to "quit hanging his head and instead hang some tuddies on these Cougar bastards." Inspired by the fire in the KU tight end group, Maeda came out for the second half's opening drive a new man, striking quickly with three consecutive passes to TE T.J. Burnett that moved the sticks a combined 55 yards, putting Kansas in scoring territory. The Jayhawks unfortunately didn't put up 6 on the drive, but kicker George Jones drilled a 32 yard field goal that may have started a KU tradition, with the cheeky sound engineer blasting out a bit over the speakers from Jones' country singing namesake's hit "They ought to have a celebration//And pay their respects to me//Put my name up in neon lights//And then give me the key." Cougars 14, KU 10, early 3rd quarter. Maeda struggled the next few series, but put things together to wrap up the third quarter and start the 4th, completing consecutive strikes to Bene' and Adam Williams of 42 and 20 respective yards. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't capitalize from the 11 yard line, and George Jones had to boot another short field goal to make it 14-13, Cougars up. Donte Link finally connected on a field goal, going just 1/6 on the day, to put Houston up 17-13 with 11:03 to go. Maeda remembered Alex Atkins' halftime words, and again went to fellow TE T.J. Burnett, finding him on a 44 yard pass before missing on two follow ups. Fortunately for KU, Maeda was roughed on the second, setting up first and goal from the 6. With just 9:07 left, Kansas regained the lead on a 6 yard chuck to receiver Nate Lucas. KU 20, Cougs 17. After trading punts, Houston put together a 51 yard drive that consumed 3 and a half minutes and resulted in the go-ahead touchdown and XP, making it 24-20. Kansas got the ball with around a minute left, but couldn't put together a drive before the final whistle. Kansas head coach @Bundy formally announced that the team would field open competition in the coming weeks for the role of QB1. "With Jeff, we're not saying its over for him, he could very well be the guy going forward. But we need to step back and evaluate the way a few things went. He's got that second quarter meltdown under his belt, he came out in the second half and recovered well, but as a team we didn't overcome the obstacles we set for ourself - some drive extending penalties on defense after third down stops, fumbling the ball away - we're going to have to play better as a team to chalk up a W in the win column instead of a L. Houston deserved to win, but we let opportunities slip way. Not every team is going to miss 5 field goals, but we also might not have to start every drive deep in our own territory with those misses. We need to come out stronger. Whether that's with Maeda under center, or (senior) Ian Morgan, or (sophomore dual threat) Aaron Diaz - we've got a lot of talent in this QB room, we just have to put the right guy on the field for each situation, and until someone steps up and claims it - 'I'm the guy' - then we're going to play it week-to-week." The Chirp Social media was abuzz, with plenty of those in attendance and at home voicing their opinions. 2. 3 7:34 UHOU 3 6 28 KANS Run QB Juan Wendelken carries for 7 yards. Tackled by DT Mike Brantly. PENALTY: Neutral Zone Infraction OLB Aaron Freeman 3 7:24 UHOU 3 10 23 KANS Pass QB Juan Wendelken incomplete. Intended for WR Sam Warmsley. had this weird bug come up, a "free play" penalty on the defense that Houston gained yards on (and should have declined the penalty since it was now a 1st down result on the Kansas 21). Instead, they accepted the 5 yard penalty, which moved the ball down the field the appropriate 5 yards, but instead of 3rd and 1 it gave them 3rd and 10.
  3. 3 4:28 UHOU 1 10 18 UHOU Run FB Jonathan Harris carries for 2 yards. Tackled by OLB Aaron Freeman. PENALTY: Offensive Holding OG Bradley Jones 3 4:6 UHOU 1 10 18 UHOU Run QB Juan Wendelken carries for -3 yards. Tackled by ILB Ezekiel Sands. found another instance of this, won't continue to spam this thread if i see more offensive holdings do the same since its a known issue now.
  4. SERIAL STATS Week 0 Edition: If You Ain't First, You're 0th made possible in part by Cereal Organization of Central Kamsas, start every day with a balanced breakfast of Kansas Cereal Grains The University of Kansas School of Education, titling weekly media with good grammar and from contributions to your PBS station from PBS Kids like you. Thank You! I've been playing around for a few days trying to figure out what I want this series to be. Like any good regular series, that means it definitely is going to be a hit, and not get canceled by episode 3 due to lack of creative enthusiasm and low ratings. Right? Right???!!! Well prepare yourselves for the SFA Variety Show you didn't think you needed. You probably didn't need it, but you're still be subjected to it anyway. I think the longterm plan is to recap the nation's top performances into one quick summary that you can read if you couldn't quite stay up to the end of PAC 12 After Dark, but today's edition of SERIAL STATS highlights the games from the inaugural weekend of SFA CFB. TRIVIA TIME! Did you know there are estimated to be as many as 50 active serial killers in this country right now? Well in the 1980s there were an estimated 200 active at any given time per worldatlas.com, though numbers may have dipped into the single digits by 2019 per a Florida Gulf Coast U study. Bundy, what does all of that have to do with trivia? That's a good question. that has a relevant answer. See, right now we're elated to know all of the different performances we saw on opening kickoff weekend, but in 20-30 years, its likely only a lasting few will still be noteworthy. So when you're removed from the game of gridiron and spending your middle aged life going to trivia nights, you're going to be well prepared to be smug to your friends with our little segment here. FIRST EVER KICKOFF: Notre Dame K Ronald Baker and West Virginia K Alfredo Noonan each kicked off to start the inaugural timeslot, on FOX's Big Noon Saturday. FIRST EVER KICK RETURN: Michigan RB Vinny Despaigne fielded his Ronald Baker kickoff at the 4 yard line. Noonan's kick went into the end zone, therefore unless an elite physicist comes in and tells me Noonan had more velocity on his deeper kick, Despaigne is getting credited for being the first to receive a kickoff, likely by milliseconds. FIRST EVER TACKLE: West Virginia FB Patrick Nuno, who wrestled down Washington State's T.J. Suggs on the opening kickoff. Yes, an offensive player made the first ever tackle, and yes, West Virginia managed to make the first ever tackle despite Notre Dames kick being fielded first, because Despaigne ran out of bounds instead of being tackled. FIRST EVER BALL CARRIED: Washington State opened their game handing the ball to RB Chris Tilson. Meanwhile, on the western side of the eastern time zone, Michigan dropped back to pass, creating two new categories for us: FIRST EVER PASS ATTEMPTED: Michigan's Jonnu Newton, who completed his pass to FIRST EVER RECEPTION/PASS COMPLETION: Michigan TE Zack Leyba. FIRST EVER TACKLE BY A DEFENSIVE PLAYER: West Virginia DT Jeurys Rogers. Rogers brought Washington State's Chris Tilson down for no gain. Across the eastern time zone, Notre Dame's Peter Barrera laid a nasty hit on first-catcher Leyba, FIRST EVER FORCED FUMBLE: which caused the first ever forced fumble, on the opening play from scrimmage for Michigan. Fortunately Despaigne was there to hop on it, preventing the first ever turnover. FIRST EVER QB RUSH ATTEMPT: Jonnu Newton carried for 3 yards on Michigans 2nd down play. FIRST EVER INCOMPLETION: hilariously, we didn't have to wait long for the first ever turnover, as Notre Dame QB K.J. Baumann failed to connect on a pass to WR Ryan Milton, getting picked off by FIRST EVER FORCED TURNOVER: Michigan CB Greg Carter on Notre Dame's 2nd play from scrimmage. FIRST PASS COMPLETION OF 20+ YARDS: WVU QB Logan Gabriel connected with tight end Xavier Garcia for 26 at the 11:40 mark in the 1st quarter. Meanwhile in Indiana, FIRST EVER RUSH OF 10+ YARDS: Vinny Despaigne continued to make his mark on the unerasable history book of firsts, galloping for precisely 10. FIRST EVER COMPLETION OF 50+ YARDS: Logan Gabriel's mark for longest pass ever wouldn't stand long, as Michigan and Jonnu Newton went up top to WR Darius Autry for 53 yards. FIRST EVER TOUCHDOWN: at the 9:55 mark, West Virginia RB Pasoni Adames scooted in from 21 yards out, which set up the FIRST EVER PAT: by WVU kicker Alfredo Noonan. FIRST EVER FIELD GOAL: Michigan K Troymaine Grant booted a "gimmee" field goal in during the WVU-WAZZU touchdown commercial break. FIRST EVER SITE SERIAL KILLER: well I'm not too sure who to place bets on, but at this point it could be any reader who has made it this far, since I'm sure you're all wondering just how far I can stretch the "first ever" records. I have a more serious piece I've been working on, but it's not quite finished and I don't think I'll be around this weekend to post it. So while this might be the end of Week 0 Edition, look forward to some Bonus Bundy in the near future. And in the meantime, give love to your family and friends. -Bundy
